MVL 2022

Good for your Trojans, but man, are saying last three coaching staffs were wrong for running a modern offense? Kotwica and Siler would have been wasted in wing-t. Your Trojans sure seemed to win a lot of games with a spread.
Burgbacher is an exception. Can’t compare him to the coach before him (Brewer) and after him (Gress). He knew how to manage a team as well as get the best out of his guys. He would also make adjustments and run hybrid offense as he needed to. Would know when and when not to try and do certain things. Didn’t hurt that he had special talent too. Kotwicka, Culp Bishop, Siler etc.

Troy was at its best running the wing t and has been successful for decades doing just that. So I’m glad we are back doing it. We’ll see what happens

Troy is going to a problem this year. Yes Dunbar is not good but their offense is scary good. Going back to what they are good at and running the rock. They’ve got some play makers. The Dunbar score is deceiving. Number 1 because they could’ve put up 100 if they wanted to. They never punted either. And the points Dunbar put up was just Because I feel Troy was bored. No excuse though. In order to be a great team you have to be locked in Every play. Have to clean that up. But I can say even after 1 game Troy is back
I just watched the first half and I wasn’t that impressed. They looked okay against a Dunbar team that was really bad. The Wing T brand isn’t anything exciting really ever, but to me, looked just pretty average. In my opinion, looks like they will beat who they are supposed to (Sidney, Greenville, etc.) and lose to who they are supposed to. That’s a small sample size with a bad opponent though.

Regardless, we should know a bit more about who between Troy and Xenia might be a contender this year after they play each other this week!

Uncomfortable but honest questions. How can a school with that enrollment and facilities be so bad in every sport accept wrestling and baseball? It’s the damndest thing. I remember when Vandalia used to take Northmont behind the woodshed. I still cannot understand why they play Northmont every year? Why agree to this certain loss each season? What does Northmont get out of beating a bad DIII team? Not great Harbin points for sure. Vandalia should be playing Northridge or Bethel or Meadowdale, no?

We’ve been through many coaches and by all accounts Cates is a good one so what is the issue?

I ask this about Beavercreek every year. I simply don’t get it

We have upgraded our facilities nicely at Greenville, yet we can't ever seem to field decent teams for anything but softball, golf, and tennis. I feel the pain. I thought several years ago, the football program was finally going to make that turn. I just don't know.

Coach Schmits just needs one or two good athletic grades back to back. I think the Freshman and Sophomore group never won a game in Jr. High and the Jr.
And Senior's only won a couple back then.
The 7th grade won some games last year, maybe they will blossom.

I think if he sticks around, things will pay off. I understand it can take several years to get your system in place.

IMO, Piqua’s in the driver’s seat until someone can knock them off.

Also, I still don’t understand why there are 2 divisions when everyone plays each other. I still think adding 2 more schools like Bellbrook, Tecumseh, or Franklin would make this league even better.

What did you think of Sidney game on Friday? I just wanted to here someone else's opinion. I thought it was not very good. Bellefontaine ran the same off tackle play all night. As usual Sidney doesn't adjust. I can watch the coaches on the sidelines telling the players nothing on the defensive side. Doenges the D coordinator, well at least I thought he was, he stands there for about a minute, then walks away. The players watch the film and talk amongst themselves. The linebacker or DB coach stands by the TV and says little to nothing.

Very sad, the best receiver still comes off the field throwing his helmet down. Coach picks up his helmet and takes it to him and gives him a 2 minute it's ok poor baby talk. This team wasn't prepared for the season and Tipp city will run the same off tackle play all night long.

Don't disagree, with me it starts with pre game warm ups,Sidney's team is on the field in a combo of multi colored shirts or with no shirt on at all. Don't tell me it's too hot, teams like Piqua and Marion Local wear full pads during pre game, others, like Coldwater, wear the same shirts, look like a team, play like a team. Against Bellefontaine the d-line had 1 combined tackle, once again our d-line is told to fire into the o-line and do othing, try something, shoot a gap,try a spin move,do something.Try blitzing once in awhile,it works for Marion Local, but what do they know about defense? If it's me I'd put #7 at the deep safety to prevent the big play, and #30 would be a linebacker/rover.

Offensively, there are other pass patterns besides 40 yard fly and two foot outs,I've seen them,slants,hitches,7 yard outs, even a post pattern.

On a positive note I thought Sidney kept playing hard in the second half despite the score, and I doubt we see a better combo of QB,RB and WR that Bellefontaine had. We'll see what happens with a well coached Tipp City team this week.

I always said they look like the bad news bears warming up. Warmups are an embarrassment. I agree with your assessment of the defense but I would put 6'4 Davis at deep safety and tell him nothing gets behind you.

Also do you like how the two middle LB'S creep up every play to about the heels of the line. Then there out of position and when the dline gets blown back. We have 5 guys between the tackles.

I think the biggest problem is the team may watch 10 plays of Friday's game. There not getting coached about what they're doing wrong.

Either blitz the middle linebackers or back them off the line of scimmage to make their reads,if they even teach that, but agreed they get hung up at the line too much. Tough on the defensive backs when a 6' 4" D-1 Power 5 recruit has all day to throw because your 3 man line is playing patty cake with the offensive line, blitz once in awhile.

Once again it looks like every pass is to a predetermined target, regardless of the coverage. Sidney has good receivers,it's up to the coaches to find the best matchups. We could have Jerry Rice at receiver one on one with half the field to work with and we'd throw a 2 yard out into double coverage the opposite way because that's what was called. Give the QB a chance to call an audible.

Everyone plays each other equally in all sports. The divisional thing is just dumb.
Only downside for football is only 1 nonconference game. It's a bit of a double edged sword, as it's not a bad thing to get to play all the nearby local schools annually, but the schedules become repetitive without anything unique, and you don't have much opportunity for marquee playoff caliber matchups early on with only 1 game to schedule for the AD.

Since they did decide to do divisions, how did Sidney end up in the Valley Division?
You see, first they picked the Miami division, so they put together a nice close together group of Piqua/Troy/Tipp/Butler/Greenville. Then they... just put everyone else in the other division?

Honestly if they put the divisions together correctly, you'd swap Butler & Sidney for a North/South division split, but in reality they didn't, yet it doesn't matter much except for giving out 2 trophies instead of just 1.

My guess is most of the northern schools wanted to be paired together given their history, and Sidney volunteered to move in order to have a better shot at trophies.

In all honesty, if they insist on keeping divisions, add Bellbrook and Tecumseh to the Valley (South), move Sidney to the Miami (North), and play 5 division, 3 crossover, and 2 non-conference.

My understanding is it went down pretty much this way. Came down to whether Sidney or Greenville would be the odd man out and Sidney volunteered. @fattire is correct on upcoming change, think they will change every five years. Don't think Green Wave will enjoy quite the same success as Sidney in Valley but should still win in a lot of sports.

I can pass on adding Tecumseh and Bellbrook. I like MVL as is, don't have a lot of non-interstate driving and these two are more out of the road than most MVL schools. Plus don't know why either would want to leave, SWBL and CBC are generally as good or better, and both schools would be giving up natural rivals.

Tecumseh is literally on a highway, easy access from 70, and similar in size to the rest of the schools. That being said, they won't leave the CBC because they can't even sustain success in that conference over the last 10 years or so much less going against the Piqua's of the world. I think it's been since the early 2000's since Tecumseh was a top tier program in that conference.

Tecumseh isn't a bad drive. However, Bellbrook is a miserable drive for any of the schools north of Dayton.

Missing my *minor* point about *my preference* of most schools being right off the interstate, as in a couple minutes. Tecumseh certainly is not. You have to drive through Park Layne and go through several lights and a busy business district to get up to 40 and then turn and head down that, or if you get off on 75 in Vandalia, you're on 40 for a long while. Of course I just go down 235 from Sidney, and I'm sure most northern schools go that.

Thr bigger point: Why would they want to leave the CBC and their Clark County rivals to play Greenville and West Carrollton instead?

Tecumseh is already traveling to Bellefontaine, London, and Jonathan Alder, so those recurring trips could be replaced by trips to Sidney and Greenville on a rotating basis (assuming they’re in the Valley). Tecumseh is within 20 minutes to Tipp, Butler, Fairborn, and Stebbins. Swap out their Fairborn opener with Shawnee or KR, plus maybe an expanded league adds a 2nd non conference game.

Bellbrook would be another strong program in the Valley division, plus it adds some nice crossover matchups with Piqua and Troy.

Bold prediction- And I will eat my words if I'm wrong today..... Troy is back and will beat a solid team in Xenia today Badly. I look for Troy by 2-3 td's. Troy is back baby! Praying I'm right!

Welp... The aviators were overwhelmed last Friday night. Tonight should be a win for them, but Fairborn is thinking the same thing. Hopefully they come out ready to play, and can bring the JV in the 4th.... That is a big "Hopefully"! Ha!

The thing is with adding two more schools, which I believe would be the sweet spot, is that there's a very limited number of schools that would fit AND not be a slog to travel to and from. I only think of Bellbrook and Franklin because in a southern division, those two with the other 4 southernmost schools, would be pretty close geographically.
Bellefontaine is a slog for everyone but Sidney, and Wapakoneta would never leave the WBL. Tecumseh probably wouldn't entertain the idea, either. I can only think of one other D-3 or D-2 school outside of DPS in the area, and we KNOW that's not happening.
So, we have this weird, 10 school and two division thing going for now.
