Agree. Waterloo had the chance to help reshape and join a new Portage County league but they vote no. Again to duck playing Mogadore! Yet they choose to continue to travel, increase transportation costs, play a school Springfield Local ( who beats Mogadore) and has no natural rivalries and routinely finish near the bottom of the MVAC. Strange but true. This might be one of the worst iterations of the MVAC that we've seen since it's creation, but with that being said, let's look towards next year with some betting lines.
Springfield odds to win league -450
Springfield is still a pretty clear favorite coming into the league. I don't see much of a drop off even though they lost their head man. Their D.C. takes over and should continue running roughshot through the league and winning a couple to a few playoff games each year. They do lose some quality players like Dante Gentile, but still have numbers that should keep them the heavy favorite. I thought their QB came alone well by the end of the year. They started to trust him more, and he looks a good building block for the future.
McDonald odds to win league +200
McDonald started hot, but cooled down late. This was likely due to a couple of key injuries. They have a lot of thier skill back (Puckett, Zajack, Parry, etc.) If they can develop some lineman, they can compete and possibly outright win a league title. They will be the program the benefits the most from the turbulent coaching carasoul that plagued the MVAC this offseason.
Mineral Ridge odds to win league +350
Hake has returned to the MVAC. I think he will need a year to regain his footing, but this is a program that will be towards the top of the league standings for the foreseeable future. I think they will struggle out of the gate replacing some of thier good skill like Rozzi and Russell, but there seems to be enough young talent there for Hake to make due and compete in year 1.
Lowellville odds to win league +500
I think the ville had a homerun hire. They got a state championship coach that's going to bring an element of phsicality that the Rockets were missing with the last regime. They always seem to have talented playmakers to build around, and next year will be no different. They have a legit QB and a dynamic wide recieiver to build around. The loss of the running back will hurt, but a guy like Tsimilos will be able to find a 1,000 yard rusher on that roster
Western Reserve odds to win league +550
Reserve retained their coach which will help, but the losses of a good class (Darney, Hemberger, Riccardi) will be a lot to overcome. I do think they will have a coaching advantage most weeks with all the changes in the league, but the lack of playmakers will dampen their expectiations. The Prater kid at QB was solid and will have to become even more dynamic for them to finish at the top of the league.
Jackson Milton odds to win league +1000
I don't see any team below the top 5 winning a game or being competitive with the teams above them. Hiring Shaner at least keeps Milton respectable. Had they went with the O.C. from Mathews they would have been at the bottom of my rankings. Shaner at least can call an offense and get kids out. I just don't see the talent there. I think they have a McDevitt kid that's a wrestler coming back that should be someone to build around. Unless Milton opens the floodgates for transfers, I don't see them reaching the heights that Coach Brode had them at during his run.
Campbell odds to win league +5000
To my knowledge they hired a junior high coach with no varsity experience. My guess is this hire has more to do with helping these kids off the field than winning games. I'm sure their new coach is a nice guy and the people of the community like him, but if he doesn't get an experienced staff to surround him, it could get ugly quick. Like Butch Jennings ugly. It's one thing to lose games when your playing in a conference with schools whose enrollment dwarf you, and your playing old rivals like Struthers, but losing in this league against Milton, Lowellville, Waterloo is an ebarrassment to what that program once was.
Waterloo odds to win league +1,000,000,000
They aren't from the Youngstown area, and I have no desire to discuss them. Join a Portage County League and save the other schools on gas. I'd rather see the MVAC Scarlet recruit Valley Christian or one of the schools from the gray tier. Waterloo serves no purpose in this league besides having questionable officiating at thier home games. I think they are looking or have a hired a new coach, but I don't care enough to Google the answer.
I am interested to see the new faces as this is one of the more compelling leagues in the Mahoning Valley. My favorite for local football is still the NE8, but the MVAC at least has some storylines worth watching in the upcoming season.
My lines have changed slightly since my first posting in January. There are 3 teams that the lines have moved on because of new information. How will this league be this year? Who are Risers? Who are Fallers? WHat do we think?

Are you sure on the Hake thing? I think he just got hired as a sub in the school. I dont think the board would have done this if he was still under suspension. I also dont think anyone in Mineral Ridge cares about his colorful past as long as everything is behind him and its all legal nowMy lines have changed slightly since my first posting in January. There are 3 teams that the lines have moved on because of new information.
1st change is Ridge is dropping from +350 to +1000
Reason: The state finally made a ruling on Coach Andy Hake. His license has been suspended until 2027. How Ridge will operate with that situation is beyond me. My understanding is that his license can be reinstated by mid-August, but he has to meet a whole bunch of requirements that I am unsure of him being able to meet. Even if he does get reinstated, how can Mineral Ridge justify this guy coaching kids in June, July, and early-August with this suspension? It was one thing when he was coaching at a private school like Valley Christian, but Ridge is a public school. I would think the state would have to take action on this, otherwise what is the point of coaches getting a pupil activity? I am interested to see if anything comes from this.
2nd change is Lowellville dropping from +500 to +2500
They went from a hall of fame coach that won a state title to a guy that has been apart of some really bad football staffs over the past 5 years. Tsimilos leaving is likely a sign that he evaluated Lowellville and saw that the cupboard is completely bare. I don't know if kids left when Mamula did or what happened, but a guy like Tsimilos leaving after 6 weeks doesn't inspire much hope. Then add on to that an unproven coach that's been apart of some of the worst staffs in the tri-county area takes over, and you have a recipe for this program to spiral into some dark times. I did see that he hired the former QB (Ballone) that had success there a few years ago, so maybe that helps stablize the situation and gives some hope for the future. I just don't see them being able to have much success next year.
3rd change is Waterloo rising from +1,000,000,000 to +1,250
I finally found out who Waterloo hired as their new coach, and it is a familiar face in this league. They were able to steal Coach Brode from down the road in Jackson Milton. This is a great hire for them as he knows exactly what he is getting into and how to maximize a roster in this league. They will not be in contention for a league title anytime soon, but their path to being a competitive team is much more likely with a quality head coach. It is not out of the realm of possibility that Waterloo could have a winning league record at some point under Coach Brode's leadership. He did plenty with less at Jackson, and I see similar results here.

On April 29th when I checked, it said suspended for the current PAP. That has since changed. It does in fact say issued, meaning Coach Hake has already met the requirements to stay his suspension. The whole document outlining this saga is on the ODE educator lookup portal. I have attached the relevant paragraph to staying his suspension. My apologies as I misinterpreted that his stay would start August 10th if he met the requirements. Obviously, that meant that he had until August 10th to complete the requirments or else his suspension would be upheld until 2027. It looks like he has done everything required of him to meet the requirments to coach at Mineral Ridge. It still doesn't explain how Valley Christian got away with him coaching the past few years there as his PAP would have been revoked during that time and they are a member school of the OHSAA.ODE search says his 5 year teaching and 5 year PAP is active, his previous credentials were ‘revoked’
