Moeller Football 2016

State championship level talent is cyclical as seen by the runs that Elder had in 03-04, St X had in '05 and '07 and Moeller's recent run. Having said that, I would think Moeller would always have the talent necessary to make the playoffs each year. So is the talent lacking or is it really coaching? If coaching, did they really have that much talent a few years ago to overcome coaching, or have they lost key coaches?

Part of the reason why Moeller was able to go to state two years in a row was because of Pat Mclaughlin, the offensive coordinator. He did a fantastic job making the offense explosive. It was really unfortunate that he ended up leaving, but it's good to see he's turning the Princeton program around. Rody, meanwhile, has been a less than stellar offensive coordinator. The playcalling is just too vanilla. Believe me, the talent is here. Half our offensive starters have offers. More than you could say in 2013 and they made it work. Ernst definitely needs to play better. He doesn't really strike me as a big-play quarterback like Ragland or MacVittie, but he still needs to make better decisions with the ball. I think he did well against Elder. The only reason that late pick happened was because the safety laid a booming hit on Khayo.

Defense also needs to be changed. Too many times happen when there aren't any subs on third downs when it most likely is a pass, and you have LBs matched up on slot receivers. The coaches need to incorporate more subs in the secondary. The defense has been making plays this year causing turnovers, Kelly has three picks which is more than the total numbers of picks the defense had in 2015. So obviously, this defense has potential. I think since we lost corners like Able and Wersel, the corners haven't been good since.

For Ignatius, the defense HAS to be able to stop the run since that's where they've gotten their success this season. I think offense is capable of scoring big, but the playcalling has to be efficient, no short screens on every set of new downs.

I don't know if we will ever see a corner like Able until they start putting their best players in the secondary. He was good! The corners haven't hurt us this year. #25 was out for a few weeks but is back now. I believe the TD the other night was the first big play that a corner gave up this year which was unlike last year. The issue has been the play of the safeties. Boy have they hurt us with missed tackles and blown assignments. Let's hope we can beat St. Ed's and get some help to make the playoffs because I think this team can make a run in the second season if they can get things going.

my daughter worked the game at otterbein and said moeller got killed. i dvr the game, and she didn't lie.

As a Moe fan I get frustrated when someone like Redskins1 tries to redirect blame to another kid. Its no the DB's, Safeties, LB's or any other player on the field. It's the guys wearing the headsets period. To call out the safeties is a joke. #33 is leading the team in tackles (which should never happen) & #27 sits 5th overall in team tackles. It's plain and simple. It's the scheme's or lack there of and that goes directly on the coaching staff. Moe did not change the D scheme 1 time vs Iggy. Zero changes in formation and zero different looks or blitz's. I think I could pick a team a part if somebody wants to run the same thing every play but heck let's blame other player or two.

Agreed. Well said

I gotta agree. Kids just seem to be out of position this year. In my opinion they are stronger this year minus a kicker, then last year. kids are giving effort but if they aren't put in the proper positions to be successful then you get a 3-5 season with not much hope on the horizon. I can go into details but it just brings up painful memories of Moe losing.

This is not a knock on anyone, but Hunter is on track to having about as many tackles (or a little less) than the safeties in previous years (Burandt, Brauning and Hubbard). It also appears that tackles are much more spread out between the DL and LBs than in previous years. Furthermore, if you look at the top ten tacklers in the GCL, 7 of them or safeties or DBs.

Blaming the coaching staff for everything just doesn't fly with me. I am not saying that they cant be blamed, but saying they are responsible for everything "period" is a little over the top.

Can't see how you disagree. I'm sorry but you have 8 D-1 scholarship players on the field with arguably a few more. That's 40% of your starters on the field. I would like to know what other schools around can say that. To be 3-5 with that talent can only mean one thing. Coaching, Coaching, Coaching Period!!!

There's not 8 DI players on this team! NoName#22 must be a parent of a player...."Coaching, Coaching, Coaching Period!" Typical Moe parents!

D-1 kids currently on Moe.
1. J. Meiser
2. S. Saddler
3. Z. Carpenter
4. J. Gall
5. B. Bates
6. M. Dotson
7. A. Hawkins
8. A. Coburn
Last time I checked that's 8 and that doesn't include several other sophomores or juniors that will receive offers.
I agree the kids need to be held accountable for not playing well in some cases but you have to be put in the correct positions and have the right schemes called. After that has been accomplished and your still not performing then you need replaced. There's plenty of talent waiting to get there shot. The play calling and repeated penalties especially the delay of game has to be coaching. Moe continues to run the same 7-10 plays on O and hardly ever changes anything on D. Extremely predictable!

Having watched the teams over only the past few years I could be wrong but is having a bunch of D1 players hindering the TEAM? Are the younger kids (their dads, really) coming up with the attitude of "my kid is going to be D1" or "my kid is going to be a part of a championship team"?

I think you guys are reading too much into everything. It's very simple, Moeller has struggled because:

1. The Corners can't cover anyone
2. The QB play hasn't been very good at all

It's tough to win when you can't pass on Offense or stop the pass on Defense. And tbh, I'm not impressed with Hawkins. I think he must be like Clifford where his performance in camps overshadows his play on the field. He's getting the same offers as Elijah Taylor, but Taylor could dominate a game.

True- over analyzing tends to happen when like this happens. But to your point, how does a team that usually has so much depth at every position which creates enviable competition for starting positions all of sudden have such glaring weaknesses? I think it has a shift in attitude that is not unique to Moeller- just more potent at the moment.

Any school could have a year without much QB depth. Not sure what happened to the Corners. You guys know the program better than I do, but I think the answer has more to do with being weak at critical positions v coaching

Lots of blame can go around. There have been games where teams (Wayne and Ignatius) completely ran over Moeller and games where teams flat out aired it out (Lasalle). Penalties are also killing Moe. Plus, How do you rush for negative 2 yards in a game with that offensive line?

Numbers don't lie

Well, what can you say? 8 up and 12 down in your last 20 games. 1 and 5 in your last 6 GCL games. 5 L's in a row. 2 consecutive years out of the postseason. Peaked in week 4. The bottom line is this: This program is on what hopefully is only a short term skid. What I have seen lately is somewhat alarming. Something I have not seen in the last 30 years. It should be pretty obvious to all that a coaching staff can make all the difference in the world. Unfortunately, this staff has been exposed. The head guy is only as effective as his subordinates. Lately, the supporting cast has not been able to replicate the success of the 2012, 2013 or 2014 group. There is what is called " the carry over effect". The demise doesn't just happen all at once. The loss of Rosfeld, Klonne, Lippy and Pat M took a little time to rear it's ugly head. Right now there is no one person capable of righting the ship. Even the AD has to be held accountable. What admiinstrator has his prized possession open up with 6 straight road games and a meaningless scrimmage in week 10? Was the objective to clinch a spot after week 9 and then celebrate with a week 10 beat down of Oh Canada on campus? A little presumptuous if you ask me. Numbers don't lie.

Having watched most of the Eds game, Lampert should have been the starter all year. That's absolutely a coaching error. I think Rody has earned one more year to at least get Moe back in the playoffs.

Good post. You can't argue with the facts/numbers. This team is mediocre...hate to say it, but it's true. This current team is graduating a lot of talent. What will change next year? I know he won back to back titles, but something is really wrong with this program. Prior to winning the first title, there was a lot of pressure on him from the fan base. People act like a state title gives you an automatic ten year pass. I just hope the fan base does not get complacent and get satisfied with just making the playoffs every couple of years. One thing for sure is they need a softer schedule. They are not good enough to compete with the teams they have been playing.

"Pride cometh before the fall..."

While I relish is some good ole fashioned wailing and nashing of teeth, what I enjoy more so is arrogance leading to failure. Such utter joy! Being a football fan myself, I've watched Moeller these last 5 decades. And I have to say, with no small amount of pleasure, that you are a prideful yet hollow bunch! No substance of character, too afraid to call things for what they are. And now, your prideful ways must admit to your first losing season! It's like Halloween in October! Wait... oh, I cracking myself up. Anyway, the boasting of 8 D1 players, the fear and politically correctness of refusing to call out coaching. All while lamenting and hand ringing! I've decided to hold up on Johnny's Contract... why spoil a good time? I'm going to throw a couple more sinners on the fire and enjoy this show!

You ignore history, my Chosen friends. Your leader is a consistent 6 and 4 or 5 and 5 man without Lippy and the boys of yesteryear! And now... 4 and 6! Well, that is if I stop the Canadian team from beating you.

While I wouldn't say just give these guys a pass and ignore any underlying issues, many teams go through championship style hangovers shortly after these successful seasons.

Elder won state in '02 & '03, had 4-6 season in 2005.
X won state in '05 & '07, had 4-6 season in 2008.
Elder went to state and state semifinals in '08 & '09, had 4-5 season in 2010.

When you have championship level success fans start to expect it every year and the team (players and coaches) can feel that pressure. Injuries and an overall drop in talent along with that pressure to win can doom a season before it begins.

Honestly Reload, as much as you despise Big Moe, I expected a much harsher assessment on Moe's season? is this a "kinder and gentler Reload" or maybe you were wearing your Pink St. xavier jersey?

Reading these posts made me think of the Bengals and all of the coaching talent that they let walk out the door because of how would you put it?? failed loyalty to Marvin? failure at the front office to pull the trigger? Zimmer or Hue should be coaching the Bengals but these previously successful head coaches seem to just have staying power. Change is hard a lot of times but necessary to maintain or exceed the standard. Not saying Rody should be fired...just saying the people around him who were very good (like the Bengals) couldn't find opportunity.

QB looked good against St. Ed Saturday. A bad year against a good schedule with less talent then past years is the result. Those saying there is as much talent on this team as the title teams need a reality check. There have been multiple TD's given up running and passing where the Moeller defense didn't have the speed to compete. Positioning is one thing but the two long TD's were players who outran the entire defense twice. You had a 6'5 gate keeper back there that could fly and could hit protecting the end zone not long ago. The skill players on offense on those title teams were outstanding. The current team competed most games but were just no match for the schedule.

Thank the lord we still beat the two GMC teams- it's one thing to have a losing season but the first year back playing that league if Mason had won- brutal!

Not sure if my choice of the screen name Possessed captures the personality I was aiming with my 3rd Yappi screen name (XXL being the other)
Was hoping for an amalgamation of the 15th century medieval Chaucer character The Miller and Nicholson’s character Jack Torrance in the Shining.

Kudos to you for hanging in with the mighty Crusaders this season as they wrap up an historic year.
Figured you would have scurried off with moejoe83 and Andy Dufresne long before now.
It's been a good train wreck, not spectacular, but enjoyable
Will be at Saturday’s record setting meeting with the Canadian team on Montgomery Road.
Meet you and birdog at the FireTruck 30 minutes before kickoff for a beer and a bit of GCL south camaraderie.
Will either be wearing my yellow T with blue lettering that says Beat X! or the older white T that says Fire Klonne! Bring back Fuzzy!
