Schulte and Goodwin came into the MAC the same year, 1999. From 1999-2013 (DSJ one winning season since 2013) DSJ was 11-10 vs Marion Local and 3-3 in the playoffs. 11 of those games were 3-7 point games. ML was always DSJ's biggest rival then. Likely each team cost the other at least one state title. ML has dominated since 2014 but we're not the only one.

Like almost all other MAC schools, No Pee-wee football! I had a few Linton fans ask me how ML does it year in and year out. After mentioning a few of your very good points above... I asked if Linton has pee-wee football, which one gentleman replied "of course". When I told him ML doesn't play a down of organized football until the 7th grade, he was shocked to say the least! LOL. They are hungry as hell to put on those pads by the 7th grade!

100% accurate. They also have a culture and an expectation that is instilled in those kids since birth… they see all these titles.. they know they have to work hard to not be the team there that doesn’t win the title…not sure we may ever see anything like this again after coach Goodwin retires.

Yeah but that 1 tremendous class was top 10 all-time MAC according to some here. So that's worth extra points.

2010 was the classic. At ML. DSJ scored with a couple minutes left to go up 17-13. ML got down to about the DSJ 20 in the final seconds but a 4th down pass was long. Somewhere there's a Press Pros video of highlights of this game. ML was upset by Minster in round 2 of the playoffs so there was no rematch.
2011 we played twice and split the games. The playoff game was the toughest game we have EVER played and it had nothing to do with football.

I was referring to the 2011 playoff game being a classic but youre right in all aspects. I believe ML had to convert a 4th and 20 at the end of that game. Hard to believe that game and the terrible tragedy that preceded the game has been 13 years ago already.

Goodwin is still a youngish coach. He could literally win 500 football games as a coach if he sticks around another 12-15 years. If he did that he’d still be under 70.

Wednesday before the Saturday game DSJ's starting center went home after practice and shot himself.
DSJ led 14-13 and was driving to run out the clock. The RB fought for an extra yard and fumbled. ML recovered. ML scored easily in 4-5 plays to win 21-14. I'll never forget that game.

I remember DSJ going to ML on a Sunday morning for a game after some students/players were killed in a car accident. We worked it out to get the game in and get back to Delphos to cook 3,000-4,000 chicken/beef dinners for our parish festival.

Idk if I could see him being the main whistle that much longer. However I don't see him fully leaving the sideline like Hetrick did. He might do what his dad did. Couldn't see him just giving it up that easily.

Hetrick left the sidelines at Versailles and went to Brookville and helped his son who was/is the head football coach.

In 2004, ML starting QB was injured early in the game and rb Curtis Moeller took every snap from the wild cat formation.

Minster vs. Anna is the one game in question. I think that one goes either way by a TD.
I'll never forget the 2011 ML-DSJ state semifinal playoff game. Maybe it was just me, but I felt there was a somewhat uncomfortable atmosphere in the air because of the tragedy in Delphos only a few days before. I almost felt guilty for wanting Marion to win and advance.
I feel the Jays should've won the game. Leading 14-13 in the 4th, they proceeded to grind out first down after first down on a clock-consuming drive. Perhaps as deep as ML's 20 yard line, one of the Marion safeties put his helmet right on the ball as the Jay running back fought for every inch.
The ball squirted loose and both the DSJ qb and an additional rb appeared to have a good chance to recover it. But they collided as they dove for the ball - and the ball took an unusual bounce. It was my son, a linebacker for the Flyers, who happened to be in the right place to fall on it.
ML had done nothing offensively for the past two quarters, and this possession started off terribly. But with DSJ rushing only three or four, and going into a zone for the first time in the game (I believe that's right), the Flyers eventually marched quickly down the field, with qb Adam Bertke, who was finally getting some time, making a total of four excellent throws for completions.
On a crossing route completion, the Flyers scored with little time left. DSJ was forced to go to the air and struggled to move the ball, leaving ML with a 20-14 (or 21-14) win.
I feel that perhaps the defensive changes DSJ made on Marion's last drive actually hurt the Jays. Regardless of the outcome, however, it was a great MAC contest, and the DSJ staff and players performed amazingly well under horrible conditions that could have easily distracted them.

Flyers won 3 state titles with Bertke at QB probably one of a very select group of QBs to do so in Ohio, I would imagine. But an excellent synopsis.

Did the Versailles Qb win 3 back in the 90's ? I think his last name was Turner.
Yes he did… lost his first start week 1 as a sophomore to Marion Local and then rattled off all wins after
that boy was a player!!
