Mentor Football 2025

Mentor finished the 2024 season as GCC champions, redeemed two losses to St Ignatius from the previous season, and went 10-0 for just the third time since the 1970's. All in all, couldn't have asked for much better out of the regular season. In the playoffs, Mentor took care of business before ultimately falling to the Region 1 standard: St Edward.

The Cardinals had a lot of individual accolades highlighted by 1st Team All-Ohio selections like QB Scotty Fox, RB Jackson Farley, and OL Landry Brede. Justen Hodge, Spencer Barninger, Julian Solis, and Dylan Tackett earned 2nd Team All-Ohio. Austin VanHuss earned 3rd Team honors. Fox (a West Virginia commit), Barninger, Solis, VanHuss, Tackett, and Caiden Clair highlighted a strong senior class that will be missed.

I called 2024 a "put up or shut up" year for Coach Matt Gray. Sure, the loss to St Eds was disappointing because it was a very winnable game. Mentor hasn't won a region title since 2020, Gray's first season. This four year stretch without a Region 1 title is the longest in twenty years. 2024 was by far their most realistic chance to win the region since 2020. But overall, Gray led the team to a very good season and I am going to give credit to the coaching staff.

Offensively, the biggest question mark on the team is at QB. Since 2000, Mentor has had a very steady line of excellent QB play. Almost every offseason, it is pretty clear who the next QB is and that player is usually one of the top talents in the state. After the graduation of Fox, there is a big hole that needs to be replaced. Rumors of potential transfers to play the position exist. But looking at the current roster, Fox's backup (Brogan Jones) is the most likely player to take over as starter. The offensive line was a consistent strength of the team. Landry Brede (6'6, 285), JoJo LoDuca (6'3, 270), Colin Prichard (6'5, 270), and Gibril McLendon (6'3, 265) return as they will be part of the biggest and potentially most talented offensive lines Mentor has had. Brede is an All-Ohio talent that will be headed to the Big Ten. LoDuca also has DI offers. The return of Jackson Farley is a significant boost to an offense that will be replacing their All-Ohio QB. Farley had an excellent 2024 and big things are ahead for his senior season behind that line. Dominic Burns is another solid back that will provide depth at the position when he spells Farley in short stints. While Mentor is graduating three of their four receivers, they do return their most talented and productive one: Justen Hodge. Since coming onto the scene as a freshman catching a TD pass in a playoff win over Medina, Hodge has demonstrated a lot of big play potential. Whomever is the new QB will have an elite talent at receiver in Hodge.

Defensively, the team put together another good season. The strength of the team was in the front seven, especially at middle linebacker with Barninger and Clair. Those two had tremendous seasons and leave a big hole at the position. Ben Schenk is the lone returning starter at linebacker. Up front, Chase Coleman and Logan Hollis are returning starters on the defensive line. Xavyion Dunn is a corner that usually gets the toughest receiver assignment. He is back and will be a three-year starter in a secondary that will be replacing the other three starters.

On paper (depending on how the Week 1 game gets scheduled), this is a team that should have no less than 9 regular season wins. The St Ignatius game looks to be the toughest, which might make the Wildcat faithful chuckle. Maybe that is just a reality of a GCC that is very down. Cleveland Heights was by far Mentor's toughest conference test, but they graduated a lot of talent and are losing their most valuable culture builders in their coaches Mac and Hicks. Strongsville will probably be the game that determines the league as I don't have much confidence in Medina bouncing back.

I have the same expectations for 2025 as I did for 2024. I expect Mentor to beat every team before them in the regular season and Region 1 playoffs except St Edward, who should be tougher in 2025 than the team Mentor played last month. How the QB position is settled will be the difference between a good team that can just get through an easy schedule versus a team that is a legitimate Region 1 contender to the Eagles.

Schedule:
Week 1 @ Olmsted Falls
Week 2 @ Erie McDowell (PA)
Week 3 (H) Cleveland St. Ignatius
Week 4 @ Brunswick
Week 5 (H) Medina
Week 6 @ Cleveland Heights
Week 7 (H) Strongsville
Week 8 (H) Shaker Heights
Week 9 @ Lorain
Week 10 (H) Euclid

Great summary. Curious to see who is scheduled week 1 and who the QB after Fox ends up being

Hope the defense can continue to take steps forward and the offense can get more consistency. That's been a struggle since Gray took over as OC

“Rumors of potential transfers to play the position exist”??? Has the transfer portal now reached high school? Oh you need a new QB? Let’s check the state portal out.

How did you figure out Week 9 will be played against Lorain? Mentor hasn’t scheduled lorain in forever.

Yes, rumors exist - but nothing is certain. It is not anything new that some families/kids move with an emphasis on football or basketball. I'm not saying I love that reality, but it has been the reality for a while. The biggest difference nowadays is how easy it is for teens to get in contact with one another.

I have seen only one other season (2014 - QB Jake Floriea transferred from Lake Catholic) where Mentor had a situation similar to the position they are in for 2025. It is pretty rare for the football program to get transfers/move ins.

In this case, the rumored kid has always lived in Mentor. The fishy arrangements were to go to other schools outside of Mentor.

It would be a kid who lived in Mentor his whole life going to Mentor public for his senior year. In that case, Mentor has to take him as a student and you let the kids compete

We've lost far more kids from Mentor youth to other programs than we've gained from the outside . Some just like to only concentrate on the transfers in and not the ones who leave because of a bias against the program.

Fact is no school has the same students from K-12. Kids come and go. Many have zero to do with sports. Unlike the privates , we just have to build what we can solely with kids from our school district who choose to stay in Mentor public schools

Sir, you are correct, Mentor football has gotten the occasional transfer but no more than anyone else. Mentor basketball, now that’s a bit of a different story.

This is happening all the time now. QB’s especially are doing this. Parents will rent an apartment in a district, private school or open enrollment are two other ways It happens and way more than you think. All the rumors I have heard are all Mentor kids who play out of district.

Been talked about in other threads, but has anyone heard that Findlay could be the week 1 opponent?

We've traveled all over, but that area would be new and fresh. Hope it happens in a home and home

The Floriea family is insanely talented! The guys are well dcumented on here, but in 2021, Paige Floriea score 40 points at the OHSAA Girls' State T&F Meet by herself (won the 10, 200, 400, and long jump). Mentor's girls won the meet with 70 points while Gahanna Lincoln got 2nd with 36.

Paige now runs collegiately for North Carolina.

Amazing run by her winning a team state title for the school by herself

Luke was good in football and basketball and is at Kent State playing wr now. Was one of the many fun players to watch in basketball on teams after our 2013 boys basketball title

Dominating in any sport is impressive, but T&F is a different animal. Anybody who questions Ohio's athletes has not been to the state meet!

Paige transferred to Rutgers for her senior season. Good luck to her in the Big 10 this year.

What to make of a potential game with Findlay? First of all, I'm thrilled when any school in Ohio wants to schedule Mentor. They are DI, so the Trojans certainly have some reason to consider scheduling Mentor if they are a bit desperate. The past two years they played Toledo Central Catholic in Week 1, a program every bit as talented as Mentor. Scheduling "up" in Week 1 will be nothing new for Findlay after playing TCC. Findlay went 8-2 in 2023 and 4-6 in 2024. They lost in Week 11 playoff games in both seasons.

No, this potential addition doesn't change anything about Mentor's schedule strength or expectations. But it would be nice to have a fresh opponent, and an Ohio one at that.

Olmsted Falls is the next biggest Ohio team still open in Week 1 according to ohioscheduler on X. I'm actually kinda surprised that OF and Findlay don't look at each other and say "well, I would rather play you than Mentor!" Let's hope Findlay remains interested. I would rather play OF than Findlay if I'm Mentor. Much closer and historically a much stronger program. But I can't see OF wanting to schedule to Mentor unless they were really desperate.

I have a friend 20 minutes from Findlay so I'd welcome it to see her too.

When is the last time (if ever) that we've played in that area?

With the league play taking a little downward spiral for me in losing Solon and Medina as opponents, at least it's something new

Idk. Mentor has low taxes, great facilities, and a legacy of good sometimes great football. If getting a better NIL offer for college is the goal then I know parents who have made worse decisions. Worry about your house before tearing down others. My kids go to private school but I see the Mentor football players working out at 6:45 in the morning every Thursday. Nothing wrong with making a commitment to be better by surrounding yourself with a positive environment.

Or, and this is crazy, you could embrace the community that you live in and play along side the people you grew up with. I’m fine with families moving their children into better academic settings; I’m just not sure the purpose of high school should be athletics.

Well Mentor does that about as well as any high performing public football school in the state. Competing with open enrollment publics and privates like you support

It's very ironic how you are doing this diatribe once again based on a rumor on a message board that didn't happen. And again, the rumored kid grew up in and lives in Mentor. He wasn't going to have to move ...

Once again you like to concentrate on the transfers in but not out. It's what you do

Also never ceases to amaze me how obtuse you are in attacking a closed enrollment public school program that is about as home grown as you'll find. While you support private schools with kids from all different cities ...

Your argument changes by the school though. You like to start stuff all over and it honestly just shows how miserable of a person you truly are

The only D1 schools around here that may win states are Ed's and maybe Ed's. Athletics are more than just the play on the field but also the culture to achieve. You send your kid to wherever you want, but if I can't do the private school thing then Mentor is a better atmosphere for education than most of the inner ring suburbs of Cleveland. Don't hate, appreciate the sacrifices these people make to try and uplift their kids. Should I feel bad I get financial aid and send my son to US. Hell no, it's called working the system because life isn't fair.

The guy gets in arguments routinely with fans from VASJ, Glenville , Massillon , McKinley and others. He changes his argument to fit the school he wants to troll

Even Lake Catholic guys, which is a school he supports, pm me to tell me the guy is a tool

He's obviously a miserable person and really needs to get a life

He got me to tout Eds so up is down and down is up today. I can't show my face at 30th and Lorain. Columbus public schools are gonna dominate D1 sports is my prognosis.
