Medina Distance Clinic (Friday, August 16)

We are having a great distance running clinic at Medina High School. It will be on Friday, August 16. The two featured clinicians will be Dr. Joe Vigil and Daniel Caulfield. Dr. Vigil was the men's distance coach for the USA in 1988 and 2008 Summer Olympics. He has spoken on five continents and over 25 countries. He has had many accomplishments in his life - 19 national team championships at Adams State, perfect score for men's cross country at the NCAA D-2 national championships in 1992, and recipient of many awards throughout the world. He had a reputation while coaching in college of taking average high school runners and turning them into Olympic runners, national champions and All-Americans. Some of his athletes whom he has coached include Pat Porter (84 and 88 USA Olympian in the 10,000, Dena Kaster, bronze medalist in the Athens (04) Olympics in the marathon, and Brenda Martinez, silver medalist at the 2013 World Championships in the 800 and 1500 meter member of the USA 2016 Olympic team.

Coach Vigil spoke at Medina H. S. in 2015. There were around 600 people in the audience for his motivational speech on the evening of August 14, 2015. He spoke for 70 minutes with no notes and received a standing ovation. He will be 90 years old in November and is still as sharp as a tack and still coaching elite athletes.

Our other clinician will be Daniel Caulfield. Daniel is the head cross country and track coach at California University of Pennsylvania. He came to the United States from Ireland at the age of 13. He ran only a 2:04 in the 800 at John F. Kennedy High School in the Bronx. At Adams State he was a four time national champion in track. He was the Irish national record holder in the indoor 800 meters with a time of 1:47.21! He spoke at the OATCCC clinic in Columbus this past January. Each session was attended by many coaches who had many positive comments about his five talks. He will have two sessions at Medina High School that are entitled "Learning From Losing, Why My Failures Were Not Fatal" (Parts 1 and Part 2). Daniel will talk about the mental aspect of becoming a better racer and competitor - putting yourself out there, taking risks and learning from those experiences.

The cost of this clinic is "dirt cheap!" If you are a coach ($25), athletes ($10) and an entire team of coaches and athletes is only $150! For more information, visit: If you have any questions please email me at
