Mavericks owner Mark Cuban: Tanking is 'our best option'

Yappi

Go Buckeyes
Should the NBA be OK with this or should Mark Cuban be punished by the league?

"I'm probably not supposed to say this, but, like, I just had dinner with a bunch of our guys the other night, and here we are, you know, we weren't competing for the playoffs. I was like, 'Look, losing is our best option. [Commissioner] Adam [Silver] would hate hearing that, but I at least sat down and I explained it to them. And I explained what our plans were going to be this summer, that we're not going to tank again. This was, like, a year-and-a-half tanking, and that was too brutal for me. But being transparent, I think that's the key to being kind of a players owner and having stability."

If the NBA isn't ok with this then they should change the rules. Until then teams will do whatever they think is their best chance at future success.

Agreed. This strategy won't always work out, afterall there's a lottery, but it provides the best opportunity to hit the jackpot on a star and have them under team control for 8 or so years.

I'm not even sure how you would punish teams. While the Mavricks are losing they aren't doing anything overly egregious. They play their best players appropriate minutes, they aren't benching their best players for 3 games at a time, they aren't selling off their best players for pennies on the dollar. How do you punish that?

This doesn't seem to be the most significant news surrounding the Mavs at the moment

You guys are free to start the other thread.

This one was more interesting to me because there is actually a debate that can take place. Not sure what can be debated about the other with the exception of Mark Cuban's knowledge of the situation and integrity.

So go ahead and start the other thread if you want...

You now have your original post that started the thread and this post. Neither post has taken a stance on this debate you want to happen nor have you engaged with the two posts that have taken a stance, so I kind of question that you found this all that interesting "because there is actually a debate that can take place."

Sometimes I take my stance early, sometimes I like to let the thread flow. This is one of those threads I'll add my opinion later.

Personally, I like Mark Cuban and enjoy him being on Shark Tank. I'll leave that out there so I can add to it when I get a few more real posters commenting on it and fewer of the trolling comments.

Do you honestly think stating your opinion influences what people say in the thread?

p.s. - why was MoeDude not banned for posting pornography?

Could you shoot me a PM to discuss the latter issue then? I think wanting some clarity is fair.

To address the thread topic, Cuban is simply stating the truth. The worst place you can be in the NBA is middle of the road. If you're going to miss the playoffs, the best thing for the future of your team is to lose as much as possible.

I think rather than punishing him for stating this, they should look into ways to not make this the reality of the league. One idea would be the amount of money a team receives from revenue sharing is based on their total share of wins.

The NFL is the same way......just ask Dan Marino.

One of the dumbest things that the NBA ever did was to base draft order/lottery entrance upon making the playoffs. Now they are considering doubling down on stupid by selecting 8 from each side and then seeding them together. 1 v. 16, and a late game on top of it. Stupid.

Basing entrance into the draft lottery on playoff participation instead of just total record is what has caused the talent gap between East and West. The 12 to 16 teams with the worst record should be the lottery teams, regardless of playoff participation.
