Mad Magazine's Al Jaffee Retires

Retiring at 99? He deserves it!

MAD was part of my childhood. The fold-ins were so clever when we were kids...and still are. SPY vs. SPY. The Lighter Side. Marginal drawings. MAD movie parodies. Some great stuff. Mom would go to the grocery store and surprise us with the newest MAD magazine and me and my brothers would fight it out to see who got to read it first. CRACKED magazine was not nearly as good, but OK in a pinch.

A very respectable ouevre. He wasn't my favorite, but his work was distinctive and always creative. When I think of a Jaffee spot in Mad, I picture the folks in his drawing always standing on tiptoe, for some reason.
