MAC becomes the first FBS conference to cancel its football season

what's next

LEVELAND, Ohio -- The Mid-American Conference (MAC) has announced the postponement of all scheduled fall contests, as well as MAC championships, due to continuing concerns related to the COVID-19 global pandemic. The Council of Presidents unanimously voted to take this action with the health and safety of its student-athletes, coaches and communities as its top priority. It is the intention of the membership to provide competitive opportunities for the student-athletes in these sports during the spring semester of 2021.

The fall sports affected are men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. At this time, there have been no decisions made regarding winter sports.

How would we know that MAC football cancelled? Where will those 4000 Akron residents go on a frigid November Thursday night?

Without football, the athletic departments might break even financially.

They will still be paying scholarships and coaches. They just won’t have any income to offset.

MAC schools range from $750K to $1.7 million in decifits each season and much more if they go to a bowl game. They do not have to continue scholarships & salaries but I'm sure they will. Even with scholarships and salaries included the overall athletic department budget will be much healthier without football at the mid-major level. Their income via tickets does not come anywhere close to their expenditures.

... but without ticket sales and revenue from Big Ten beatings the MAC athletic department deficits will balloon. It would not surprise me to see some coaches contracts terminated, scholarships "modified", and further sports terminated.
