Lima Senior To Join Toledo City Athletic League In 2023-24

I was wondering what they were gonna do with the TRAC ending. Isn't there some closer conferences for them? I know they are big for the WBL. They are in a tough spot geographically to join a close conference with schools like them. I'm surprised Davey didn't add a paragraph at the end of the article saying how this is a perfect opportunity for Kenton to leave the WBL and for Senior to take its spot

I think before the TRAC, they were in the GMC for some time with the closest school being Middletown?

What was the name of the conference they were in with Fremont, Findlay, Napoleon, and Marion Harding maybe?

Before the TCAL fell apart, Lima and Fremont Ross were going to be in the TCAL with the Toledo parochials and Whitmer...the financial deficit that forced the TCAL to cancel freshman sports also forced the parochials to leave the league and help begin the TRAC...maybe the TCAL is trying to put the band back together again ??

They aren't necessarily too big for the WBL (big, yes, but outside of basketball they'd just be the new Kenton, bringing up the rear in everything.)

They've just burned every bridge with the other Lima area schools and bring zero fans. I'd argue their demographics don't help either. The WBL would likely roll with 9 or find a way to get to 8 rather than ever consider Senior.

Closer conference....no, not really. They're equal distance between Toledo and Dayton, so the only other leagues that could even conceivably work are the MVL or the GWOC. And consider both of those leagues said thanks but no thanks to Trotwood who is probably the closest comparable to Lima....they aren't happening.

Their only choices were the TCL, a football scheduling alliance with the NLL, or total independence. This is a nice landing spot for them.

We can't get a Sandusky in this?

That's ok; who likes Big Blue anyways besides Upside? Ha!
Are you by chance referring to the legendary poster Big Blue? He was a hoot and knew his stuff. The Ross/Sandusky rivalry ran hot in his blood and probably still does. I remember that since Jim Bollenbacher had assisted at Ross he was by extension unfit to coach the Streaks. His reference to Ross as the "Wee Giants" was his way of showing contempt without being disrespectful, he hated Ross but respected them. Man, threads that Big Blue was part of were almost always fun.

Good times.

honestly, I was referring to Sandusky. But, now you mention it, we do miss his insight/banter

Can you elaborate as to what bridges were burned? You're the second poster on yappi to use that phrase regarding Lima and the WBL. The first poster mentioned a few examples (some going as far back as the 70s) but if bridges were in fact burned why do OG, Shawnee, Elida etc... still continue to play Lima in boys basketball? Why does half the WBL play Lima in baseball, soccer, volleyball???

They're not risking any trophies to them. Different levels of burned bridges I suppose. I've only been to a few basketball and football games and they always seem to play hard and fair (with maybe the occasional pulling a player down to the basketball court, lol).

I suspect that you are referring me as one of the two posters, that and the fact that I did mentioned burned bridges. For the sake of full disclosure, I have never had a bad experience at a Lima Senior athletic function and I have been to many. Two schools that come to mind when it comes to running a quality athletic departments are Findlay and Lima Senior. My post came from recollections of comments by people over the years, I did not experience the Lima/Wapak football game I referenced nor did I witness any funny stuff with the basketball player I mentioned. I doubt that Lima is alone where resentment over lopsided games is concerned and there is enough student-athlete movement throughout the state to show that Lima is hardly unique in that regard as well. If you consider my prior comment out of bounds I will gladly delete the post. I meant no disrespect, just speculating during a thread.

Are you referencing the Lima Senior / Saint Francis boys basketball game in December 1996? Please tell me you are lol. I have an ironic story regarding that incident so I'm kinda hoping you are talking about that.

You probably remember the 1996 Lima Senior Spartans winning the D-I state title in football, or not. You seem to know a lot about NW Ohio sports in general.

Lima wasn't part of NW Ohio in 96. :D I know some stuff about Toledo sports but not really the bigger picture. Purely a fan perspective. IB is the better resource for that because he's really old and never got out of the neighborhood.

Now if my memory serves me well it was December 1996. Lima Senior was maybe 2 weeks off of winning a state title in football. They were hosting SFS the night in question. A break away by a SFS player led to Lima Senior guard / quarterback of the football team that year Jimmy Morris running up behind the SFS player and as the kid went in for the lay up Morris basically grab him by the neck of the jersey and pulled him down. Foul was called, Morris (IIRC) left the court as it was a flagrant foul, while leaving raised his middle finger to the crowd (home crowd no less which was odd) and called it bball career.

I say this story is ironic because the SFS player in question was Zach McClellan who would later go on to pitch for the Colorado Rockies but who also had an older brother who would go on to become the head baseball coach at Lima Senior AND had Jimmy Morris' little brother on his baseball roster. It amazes sometimes how life comes full circle lol.

That was one of the better SF bball teams since they won the title in 83'. Robierre Cullars, Rick Fox, and McClellan.

Morris, Bratton, and Kristoff. Special team indeed. They had a team a couple years earlier (Morris' soph year) with two huge backs. One was West and I forget the other? West was about 240lbs. and a monster. Buddy of mine managed Metropolitan Beer Distribution in downtown Toledo. Bratton worked there in the summer and my buddy said he has never seen a human throw around full kegs of beer like Bratton did. I think he had severe sickle cell if I remember right? Tough arse kid.

I'm fairly certain Rick Fox was in the NBA by 96.

Walker is the other bruiser you're thinking of.

Funny story about Bratton and Kristoff. One practice during the '96 season, Bratton and Kristoff begin to square up with each other after a play. Will grabs Kristoff by his facemask with both hands and lifts him off the ground. It took half the starting D to separate Bratton from Kristoff. It took one guy to hold Kristoff back haha.

and yea Bratton suffered from sickle cell.

Funny enough having lived in South Carolina for 18 years now when people ask me where in Ohio I'm from I tell them Lima. Their reaction is always Where? huh? I retort with Toledo, I'm from Toledo. lol It's just easier than explaining where Lima is geographically.

Being from Defiance is easy to explain.

"Halfway between Fort Wayne and Toledo."
