If we're going to take ESPN personalities off the air for embarassing comments...where does the line stop. About 80% of their on air personalities would be out of work. ESPN is in the entertainment business, it's not sports.
I hate ESPN. Only show I watch is Gameday.

I was hesitant on McAfee but he is doing really well IMO.

Never been a big Pat McAfee guy, seems like a Howard Stern shock jock type. And maybe because he was a Colt all those years. I'd guess you'll start seeing some changes with Gameday soon, the thing about TV entertainment is that if you're not changing you can't stay ahead. They added some eye candy with the young gal, David Pollack seems a little stiff to me and Reece is the same. I could see them looking at making some changes there. Kirk is a staple. All the rest of the seats could get changed. Des is entertaining but he's got some weird takes.
Boy did they knock it our of the park Saturday with going to App State and having that hail mary game winner.

They needed a clown for the crew, Des plays the role perfectly.

Rece and Kirk are the glue that holds the show together. Rece isn’t a stiff at all. He’s super intelligent and has a quick wit. The rest of the seats are replaceable. McAfee will eventually take Corso’s seat. Desmond Howard brings nothing to the table besides dumb contrarian predictions and an extremely annoying fake laugh, and David Pollack is decent enough but kind of boring.

They’d be better off paring the show back down to 90 minutes and going with Rece, Kirk and McAfee as the trio, with Bear adding gambling tidbits.

GameDay was at its best a couple decades ago when it was 90 minutes, with Fowler, Corso, Kirk and Rocket Ismail as the panel with no ancillary fluff, nonsense, rotating cast members, etc. They basically just talked about the games and BCS.

It’s true, it’s true. Trust me …

Unfortunaly the ancillary stuff gets the fringe people and that's what it's all about. Baseball is turning it's game upside down to get the fringe fans to watch.
And if you're ESPN, you need as much "good" programing as you can get.

Another way the show has gotten very lazy is using the same theme song since 2005. Change it up. Find something fresh.

Remember back in 2003 when the Back in the Mud intro song had the second verse change every week based on that week’s big game(s)? That felt fresh.

It’s true, it’s true. Trust me …

All the fluff and extra BS in the show is just there so they can get an extra hour or 90 minutes worth of ad revenue. The feel-good story stuff, “You Had One Job,” stuff, etc. doesn’t add viewers at all. It’s literally just there to fill time that doesn’t have to be covered by the main panel.

I can’t be the only person these days who watches the first couple segments of GameDay in the 9 a.m. hour and then goes and does other stuff, just tuning back in at 11:45 for the picks.

It’s true, it’s true. Trust me …

11:30 for me but yeah same.

For TV and radio, it's audience. They know that people aren't going to lock in for 3 hours straight, even with the best programming. So they re-air things, they keeps segments short to hold the audience. For instance on Saturday they went to preview Ap State and Troy. No one outside of those fan bases cares about those schools, but they wanted to throw them a bone. BTW, the story on Michigan's Erick All was phenominal on Saturday. It's fluff, but a good story.

Let’s be clear, they went to App State for two reasons, neither of which was “they wanted to throw them a bone”:

1. The games ESPN wanted to go to had the helium shot out of them by on-field results. ESPN would have loved to go celebrate the old OU-Nebraska rivalry if the Huskers weren’t a complete dumpster fire. They said they were going to go to Miami-Texas A&M except A&M’s upset loss last week took all the juice from that game. If LSU hadn’t tripped over their wang on opening weekend, they probably could’ve hit Baton Rouge for Kelly’s first SEC conference game between what would have been two 2-0 teams featured on ESPN primetime.

2. ESPN wants GameDay to have a huge crowd and raucous atmosphere. When there are no huge games that will naturally bring that environment, they go searching for the nice little-guy story and make an appearance there because that fanbase will be amped to have GameDay, thus giving ESPN the crowd numbers and atmosphere it desires for the show. Think about going to Fargo a few years ago. Think about Cincinnati last year. The worst thing that can happen for ESPN is showing up to a mediocre game with fans who are jaded with GameDay, because that lack of enthusiasm and smaller crowd numbers is palpable through the TV and makes ESPN’s crown jewel non-game program seem like it’s not that big of a deal.

It’s true, it’s true. Trust me …

Was the App St game even on regular cable? Thought I saw it was only on ESPN+?? How was that the biggest and best game of the weekend but not on tv?

Great points.

It wasn’t the biggest or best game, nor was anyone ever implying that it was. I have no idea whether it snuck onto one of ESPN’s lesser channels or whether it was relegated to ESPN+.

Objectively speaking, the “biggest game” was probably BYU at Oregon or Miami at Texas A&M. But it’s tough for ESPN to really pump up the excitement at those spots since A&M got humbled by a Sun Belt team one week ago and Oregon got clobbered 49-3 two weeks ago. I guess they could’ve done Michigan State at Washington, but visiting a then-unranked Power 5 team trying to climb out of the smoldering remains of its 2020-21 Jimmy Lake Experiment isn’t exactly must-see TV. Especially expecting a ton of people to show up at 6 a.m. PT for an unranked team.

Wasn't a banner list if games Saturday, but there were some good ones. Texas A&M/ Miami was a tough watch because the offenses were so bad. An entertaining game that started the day was the Syracuse/ Purdue game. It was 9-3 Syracuse late in the 3rd and the 4th quarter was as shootout, with Syracuse getting the last shot in. How far has Nebraska fallen?
We'll see how the season shakes out, but I think Georgia could hang a 49-3 beating on alot of teams in this country, and good ones too. I think they are far and away the best college team out there. Either Penn State is much better than expected or Auburn has really fallen off. Notre Dame with another grinder. That's just not a very good team and Bowling Green beating Marshall doesn't help the Irish much either. I'm stunned Michigan is #4, and just goes to show the fallacy of pre-season polls. Midwest "names" get ranked, not necessarily skill level.

I would not be surprised if Gameday morphs even more into a betting preview show with less feel good storied, it is what currently draws eyeballs. The campus location is a big part and they will probably go where they can get the biggest crowd reaction for games ESPN will be carrying. This week is a perfect example as they head to overrated Tennessee as they play a mediocre Florida team instead of better stories in Wake Forest or even Kansas.

Tennessee vs Florida is a big rivalry game and both teams look to be Top 15-ish this season. So it makes sense to me. That game airs on CBS, by the way, for anyone believing ESPN is choosing a game because it airs on ESPN.

It’s true, it’s true. Trust me …

The App State game was always an ESPN+ assignment. That TV assignment and time was probably set before week 1.

Going to Tennessee this week is boring. Shake things up and go to Lawrence for undefeated Kansas vs undefeated Duke. If KU wins, maybe they'll go next week when they host ISU.

Week 5 will offer a bunch of conundrums for Gameday location, notably back to the SEC for 'Bama @ Arkansas while the ACC has a big one with NC State @ Clemson.

This is football, not basketball. ;)

GameDay has been markedly better the past two weeks with Lee Corso out sick. Pat McAfee is doing well as a permanent panel member and is bringing some necessary new life and energy to the show.

It’s true, it’s true. Trust me …

Not sure why GameDay spent a good five minutes in Segment #2 talking about Minnesota vs Penn State. I know that’s their ABC night game, but I can’t imagine the nation cares at all about that game.

I know I’ll be watching Miss State vs Alabama and K-State vs TCU, and maybe some baseball, tonight over the mid Big Ten game.

By the way, kudos to Desmond Howard calling Ohio State’s schedule “kinda weak,” emphasizing that it’s late October and they’ve only left Columbus one time.

It’s true, it’s true. Trust me …

No Lee Corso again today. That’s three weeks he’s missed already this season. It’s time.

OSU plays a big intersectional game every year. They were supposed to play at Oregon in 2020…unfortunately I had tickets…but the game was cancelled. They had Oregon at home in 2021 as the return game. They had ND this year as what was supposed to be a monumental season opener, but ND isn’t that good this year. Not OSU’s fault. They play in South Bend next year. In upcoming years there are some quality home and home series scheduled. The league schedule divides home and road. The other two non-league games are typically home to pay the bills for the athletic department and one of the games is typically an in-state MAC school to help pay their athletic budget. Similar models exist all across college football. If ND was in a league I’m sure their schedules would be similar and their losses increased.

I think tOSU threw Tressel a bone a few years back and has YSU next year. From what I hear the Pens really wanted the $s.
