NORTH CANTON —

The Hoover High School girls shot a 335 during Saturday’s Stark County Invitational at The Sanctuary Golf Club. That number was enough to win last year’s county tournament at The Elms for Jackson.

This year’s Polar Bears weren’t settling for that again. They attacked The Sanctuary and came away champions again, this time with a magnificent 303 led by medalist Cassie Pantelas’ 73.

“Last year, we did great in this tournament,” Pantelas said. “I just wanted to maintain for the team. I didn’t really think I was going to be medalist.

“I just go out and try to shoot the best score I can and whatever happens, happens.”

“I do remember The Elms being windy last year,” Jackson coach Teal Harvey said. “But was it 32 shots better? No.

“When you have three shoot 75 or better and one 80, you are very pleased with the scores.”

Harvey was naturally pleased with all his girls’ play, but Pantelas got a special pat on the back for her week.

“She had a 34 Wednesday at The Fairways,” he said. “Then she shot 2-over at home on Thursday at Shady Hollow. Today she comes out and shoots 2-under on the front — that’s three pretty good nines in a row.”

Pantelas’ competition came from her teammates. While the sophomore was going 33-40 for her 2-over score, freshman Landrie Grace and junior Kelsey Schutt each posted 75s for the runner-up score by four shots.

“The 2-under on the front helped,” said Pantelas. “I started on No. 18 and it was cold. I had a bogey, which kind of set me back, but I was just on it for the front nine.

“The second nine I was a little off. But I got through it.”

Grace went 37-38 and Schutt 36-39 to push Pantelas to the end.

Jackson’s other scorer, sophomore Louisa Englehardt, carded a 37-43 that just missed getting her into the 70s. The only other scores in the 70s came from Hoover’s Mackenzie DiPietro (42-37, 79) and Marlington’s Kayla Hardesty (36-43, 79).
