Obviously a campaign dreamed up by some boomer who heard that all the kids are really into this thing on their phones.

If keeping our HS sports teams from becoming virus hot spots is key to having a fall sports season it will take leadership from the adults who work with the kids.
This morning while hiking in a local country park I noticed a local HS XC team finishing up their morning work-out. This involved a full squad (50 or so minimally clothed sweaty boys and girls) game of frisbee football. Individuals I would identify as coaches were present along with a group of unmasked parents in a group chatting nearby. As a coach I have never found much value in frisbee football as a training tool, I might just be a frisbeephobe. Note this is in a country under the Orange level 3 advisory. As a coach I know I could run a practice which incorporates good core work and distance work-out all with reasonable distancing. A game that disregards all guidance seems like an unnecessary temp of fate. I know kids will do things on their own I do not agree with, but those things don't happen while I'm in charge and tasked with trying to keep these kids safe. I hope I don't see HS __ in the news re a COVID outbreak.

Hard to find any issue with what you said. Have seen the same thing, worse for football activities. This is where school leadership comes in. The AD, Principle and Super should spot check things (mine do).

We are not having issues with the guidelines and school rules. The kids occasionally get to close together, but separate apart. First couple of weeks they needed to be reminded but they are doing it on their own now for the most part.

Everyone is guessing. Here ARE a few things that I have heard from some of my son’s specialists (he had a liver transplant 7 years ago and I trust them) and a few other reliable folks IMO. First- death rates .... if someone dies in a nursing home of a heart attack, or pneumonia who tested positive they will count as a covid-19 death. What about terminal people? - they maybe counted as covid deaths too. I Want to ask haw many of these people would have died anyway? 20%? 15%?.... no one knows. Positive tests: a kid from out school tested positive... no symptoms other than loss of smelling...., A week later he tested again and was positive again... does he count as two positive test on two different days? How many people have two positives? Finally, I teach American government and the is no doubt the both parties were going to politicize this.... that’s what they do. Their primary function is to get their people elected and make the other side lose votes. The next order of business is to prevent a third party from ever getting a toe hold. They usually work together on this one. I want to have a season... I will wear a mask (or an armored suit). And will have my kids wear one as long as all other do. Trumps fault, Obama’s fault, China’s fault, your mom’s fault..... does not matter. I wear a seatbelt, i eat vegetables..... I think I can wear a mask....you don’t have to be very tough to do that.

We have on the order of 150,000 more deaths now than would be normal at this point in the year. That is actually at the lower end of estimates because it does not take into account that the economic slowdown and travel restrictions have actually decreased the number of overall accident deaths, which is a major source of deaths in a "normal" year. It also does not take into account that COVID-19 inspired restrictions should decrease the number of deaths from the infectious diseases that normally spread in the population. So for those of you who think the COVID-19 data is all cooked, exactly what do you think is causing the excess deaths? Because there is a very powerful Occam's Razor argument that it's primarily COVID-19.

I have been tracking the excess deaths weekly. As well as deaths among health care providers. Those are the stats that epidemiologists and statisticians who model epidemics use to check assumptions. When your assumptions are roughly in line with those you have reason to believe you are on the right track, when they are not you should look at your assumptions. This is what so many people looking for the numbers to prove what they believe don't grasp. Good statisticians look for the numbers that might disprove their model.

I really, really try to avoid using graphs and charts these days unless I really need a full court press. I do a lesson at the start of AP Stat and the start of Mathematical Models and Data Analysis every year showing who easy it is to deceive with graphs by using the wrong type of graph of the wrong scales. Or by using misleading numbers or graph design.

One interesting thing to remember about the excess fatality rates is that if COVID-19 is really no worse than the flu we should be seeing a drop in overall fatalities. Because overall accident deaths are way down for the year, particularly among teenagers and young adults for whom accidents are a leading cause of death. And because the isolation measures that have been implemented are almost certainly driving down flu and other infectious disease deaths.

I am pretty much through arguing with the people who think this is mostly a hoax. It's not worth my aggravation or theirs. I would say that we will all know in six months, but realistically more evidence won't change that many people's minds. All you have to see to know that is true is to look at how more evidence (and re-evaluation of old evidence) about masks is seen by some as proof that no one knows anything about whether wearing masks helps. A month ago were saying "see infections are going down" and then a few weeks ago it was "OK infections are going back up but hospitalizations are down" and then last week it was "OK infections are up and hospitalizations are up but deaths are down." This week we are on to other "proof that this is all a hoax." But there are a lot of people who still don't know what to think, so for those people my teacher brain and my statistician brain says keep explaining.

I understand about being through with arguing. I get there twice a week myself and then I let myself get sucked back in. I remember sometimes arguing with my children when they were little and about 15 seconds into it, remembering that they are children and I'm not going to argue. This feels a lot like that. I used to have discussion with other coaches about what Woodridge was doing for workouts. Howard used to publish his workouts and my kids would also have them. I think he told coaches at clinics that he would email them his work out plan if they wanted. I would flat out give the coaches his work outs and then get a call or email telling me how bad a plan it was. "I would never run mile repeats like that!" "It's not good to do this a day after that, and you need more of this and less of that!" If you don't train this system more then blah blah blah. He's kicking your butt. When you roll off 3 or 4 in a row, then send me your plan and I'll give it to Jeff. This is like that. There is proof. You can see it with your own two eyes. There are stats a plenty. It's not a hoax. Get it together so we can be done with it.

One thing that is really concerning me is the strain on some medical personnel that some seem to completely disregard. My youngest son's grandfather on his mothers side was a helicopter mechanic in Vietnam. He has had some issues with PTSD. Another relative was a soldier in WW2 (Many years deceased now) He had very little affect from his time in combat and he was actually in the trenches. It was always an argument about how soft the Vietnam vets were. The WW2 vet would just rip on the Vietnam vet about being soft. Long story short is that the helicopter mechanic in Vietnam saw 10 times the combat that the WW2 Infantry man did. A little more research and we found that WW2 vets in actual combat would probably be in 10 days of battle in a year. Only 10% of those in the military saw any action in WW2. In Vietnam, 60% would see combat and they would be in over 225 days of combat in a year.

I'm hearing that some of these ICU doctors and nurses are seeing 10 years worth of trauma and stress in a few months. They might get out of it when this is all said and done.
