Individual World Cup (aka Bootleg Worlds)

Wanted to make a quick post about the Individual World Cup, which is kind of replacing Worlds this year. Not every country made the trip (most notably, no USA/Japan from a quick scan), but Russia is still there so it's worth watching in my opinion. Greco is completed, women's freestyle finishes up tomorrow, and men's freestyle (including some American collegiate wrestlers)

Greco Gold Medal Winners:
55kg- Emin Sefershaev (Russia)
60kg- Zholaman Sharshenbekov (Kyrgyzstan)
63kg- Zhambolat Lokyaev (Russia)
67kg- Nazir Adbullaev (Russia) (beat 2016 Olympic Champ Stefanek in quarters)
72kg- Balint Korpasi (Hungary)
77kg- Roman Vlasov (Russia) (2016 Olympic Champ)
82kg- Milad Alirzaev (Russia)
87kg- Kiryl Maskevich (Belarus) (Beat 2016 Olympic Champ Chakvetadze by TECH in finals)
97kg- Musa Evloev (Russia) (Beat 2016 Olympic Champ Aleksanyan in R16)
125kg- Sergey Semenov (Russia)

Women's Freestyle Gold Medal Winners:
50kg- Ekaterina Poleshchuk (Russia)
53kg- Maria Prevolaraki (Greece)
55kg- Iryna Kurachkina (Belarus)
57kg-
59kg-
62kg- Aisuluu Tynybekova (Kyrgyzstan)
65kg-
68kg-
72kg- Yuliana Yaneva (Bulgaria)
76kg-

Men's Freestyle Quick Hits:
57kg- Stevan Micic (Michigan) is here, matched up against Naim of Bulgaria. Should maybe hit India in a tough match in quarters, Armenia/Ukraine in semis. Uguev of Russia is the best here, but is opposite Micic.
61kg- Probably Russia v Azerbaijan in the finals. Fun fact for eagle-eyed Penn State haters: Destribats of Argentina, who pinned Zain to qualify 65kg for the Olympics, is entered here as well.
65kg- Rashidov/Aliev in Round 1 (again! Check their match from Worlds last year) is probably the winner. Maybe Bahrain or Ukraine on bottom.
70kg: Potential Gadzhiev/Gadzhiyev final here, which would make me very happy. Russia, as always, is in the mix, as well as Turkey maybe
74kg: Wish a happy Hannukah to Mitch Finesilver (Duke), who has to wrestle Zhamalov of Russia in R1 in about 5 hours. Should see familiar name Frank Chamizo in the finals against Zhamalov which is probably the match of the tourney should it happen.
79kg: Bunch of nothing at this weight. Russia is a safe bet, along with Belarus.
86kg: Lots of solid but not great guys here. Kurugliev, Punia, Makoev, Baranowski, Abakarov, and Friev all here.
92kg: Like 79kg, bunch of nobodies. Russia and Azerbaijan both solid
97kg: 2016 Olympic Champ Abdulrashid Sadulaev is the best wrestler in the field. Should roll against Turkey, Poland, and Azerbaijan
125kg: No Akgul or Petriashvili here, so new blood gets a shot. Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Poland, and Russia should all have a shot. Amar Dhesi (Oregon State) has a pretty favorable draw and has a shot to medal.

Good job Yank, per usual. (y)
Watched the Greco and the Women. Nice to have wrestling in the middle of the week when you're off.
Germany has seemed to benefit the most from the absence of Japan and the USA in Womens FS. Quite a few finalist.
Micic wrestling for Bronze.

Reminder; Friday is FLO's 150lb 8 man challenge. More wrestling. Ho, Ho, Ho!!!

Men's freestyle finals, in medal order:
57kg: Uguev (Russia), Harutyunyan (Armenia), Yatsenko (Ukraine)/Amouzadkhalil (Iran). Micic falls in the 3rd place match
70kg: Gadzhiev (Poland), Yavaz (Turkey), Orozbekov (Kyrgyzstan)/Andreasyan (Armenia)
74kg: Zhamalov (Russia), Chamizon (Italy), Salkazanov (Slovakia)/Eryilmaz (Turkey)
92kg: Zhabrailov (Russia), Rubaev (Moldova), Scherrer (Switzerland)/Yaylaci (Turkey)
125kg: Sharipov (Russia), Baran (Poland), Khramiankou (Belarus)/Lazarev (Kyrgyzstan)

Russia winning again (big surprise, I know). Good opportunity for places like Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Switzerland, and Armenia to get a medalist or two when normally they would be shut out.

Uguev looked great in finals. 10-0 under a minute or so. Micic had a beauty TD in the first, quick and slick!
Then kinda shut down and lost 4-2. Shot clock, TD, lost challenge.
Chamizo loses 4-2. Shot clock, TD, lost challenge. Good match, the Russian was a little better.
Good to be able to see world class wrestling even if Japan and the US aren't there.

Watching Zhamalov has really been entertaining. I saw him against Brady Berge at 2018 Junior worlds and thought "This guy is the real deal". He ended up losing in the finals, but won U23 Euros and U23 Worlds last year with a win over Tsabalov this year.

The Zhamalov-Tsabalov-Sidakov battle for the Olympic spot will be amazing. Can't believe Sidakov might not make the team, but who knows now.

Final Results from today:
61kg: Magomedov (Russia), Gvarzatilov (Azerbaijan), Destribats (Argentina)/Vangelov (Bulgaria)
65kg: Tevanyan (Armenia), Muszukajev (Hungary), Aliev (Azerbaijan)/Ohannesian (Ukraine)
79kg: Usmanov (Russia), Kotanoglu (Turkey), Kadzimahamedau (Belarus)/ Mykhailov (Ukraine)
86kg: Kurugliev (Russia), Baranowski (Poland), Ianulov (Moldova)/Gocen (Turkey)
97kg: Sadulaev (Russia), Hushtyn (Belarus), Bataev (Bulgaria), Karadeniz (Turkey)

Some notes from the final day of competition:
- Destribats from Argentina is having himself a year. Beats Zain to qualify the weight, then knocks off World bronze Aware here before taking bronze. What a jump in quality from one year to the next.
- What the heck happened at 65kg??? Champ Tevanyan finished 5th at JUNIORS last year, then beats Muszukajev by 8! Rashidov DNP! Muszukajev over Aliev! Wild bracket, most unlikely champ in a while for me.
- Hushtyn didn't show for finals, avoiding embarassment surely.
