Indiana Basketball 2023-24

One thing is for certain, there is no more runway for Woodson. IU has to win next season, they need to contend for a big ten title and make the NCAA tournament and get a round or two in - AT MINIMUM. The standards at IU has sunk so low, and Purdue's success, even Indiana State's has put the Hoosiers on the back burner and that simply does not happen in that state.

Malik Reneau - when not in foul trouble, is an excellent big ten player and even carried the Hoosiers at times this season.
Gabe Cupps - big time year for him, weather he was expected to contribute much or not this year, he certainly had his chances and for a kid who scored at the big high school level in Ohio, he looked like offense was foreign to him this past season. Ball handling, defense I thought he was fine, but in today's college basketball, you have to be a threat on offense.
Trey Galloway - He was forced into the primary ball handling role because he could actually make some things happen. Not ideal but he was the best we had. Somehow, someway let's hope he can develop a more consistent jumper.
Anthony Leal - A guy who wasn't expected to do much ended up being a glue guy for this team. His role should remain the same.

This core by itself doesn't look too imposing. But if Tucker is a true 5 star, and you can add some shooters, this could become a dangerous team.
If Indiana is counting on Cupps being a good scorer then they will fail.

Again.

Indiana may be on the radar of Iowa basketball player Tony Perkins, who's from Indianapolis. He would be a great pickup for the Hoosiers.

Indiana with two BIG pickups the last few days.
Myles Rice/ Washington State - Pac 12 ROY / All Freshman team 14.8 PPG
Oumar Ballo / Arizona - 2x All Pac 12 / Pac 12 All Defensive Team 12.9 PPG 10 RPG

Add returnees, Mackenzie Mgbako, Trey Galloway, Malik Reneau, Gabe Cupps, Anthony Leal, recruit Bryson Tucker.

Suddenly this team looks good. Ballo is much thicker than Ware and probably more defensive oriented, but can score. I look for Mgbako to really take off next season (likely his last at IU).

I've said countless times I don't like NIL or the transfer portal, but when you have the juice like IU, it can work into your benefit.

Woodson has zero excuses this year.
So here is the new conundrum for colleges. Woodson has not proven he can coach actual basketball very well. But he certainly has been able to recruit top talent and it appears IU is on the radar for most top high school and transfer portal talent across the country. IU got the NUMBER ONE transfer portal guy in Ballo. I'll say that again....IU go the NUMBER ONE transfer portal player ranked in the country. To put some metrics around this, Ke'lel Ware transferred to IU last year, but Oregon couldn't wait to see him go. He was a bust in Oregon. Now he played himself into being a first round pick. Ballo is light years ahead of Ware coming to IU. Now he's older, he's a true senior and let's face it, if he was first round worthy, he wouldn't be in the portal. But he's already proven he's a top big man in the country with his body of work. Arizona has been one of the top programs over the last 20-25 years and he's been an outstanding player for them. We talked about upgrading at PG. X is gone and Cupps, we just don't feel he may be the guy. Enter Myles Rice, a true PG and has a standout freshman year under his belt. So likely win or lose, Woodson is staying in Bloomington because he can get the goods.

And this can be true as well...
My brother and his boy are all into IU recruiting and have always sent me all the updates and I would get all excited only to see flops! We stole from the Dolphins that buy some alcohol before each season and drink it after the last undefeated team is off the board each season.....

I go way back......vague recollections of '81, Uwe Blab years and fully in '87.
I always intend to get my VHSs of the 87 tourney run, and the BK show in between the rounds, burned to DVD at some point but never do.

Pains me to saw as I did earlier that, while we have the banners, Purdue has overtaken IU as a college basketball successful program.
Hell, I remember Gene Kaedy back in the day saying how he just wish his school had Indiana somewhere in the title.....

I thought Crean was on the way to bringing us back to greatness, but just ran out of steam. He earned my respect by taking us out of the ashes that the turdburgler Sampson put us in

I'm old enough to remember the 76 team, the 81 team definitely and was all on board with Steve Alford and the 87 champs. So before I graduated college, IU had 3 national titles and Knight was the king of college basketball. They even had a couple of shots in the early 90's but couldn't win it all. But IU was ALWAYS near the top of the big ten. And let's face it times were going to change. With each rule change - shot clock - 3 point line - coaching has become less important and talent takes over.
But even though Purdue has been better the last several years, the 5 banners still cast a long, long shadow and at least for guys over 40, IU still is the king of the state. Heck, think about Notre Dame's fortunes? When IU is good, they still pack Assembly Hall and they still get alot of national TV games.
I don't know if you follow much IU stuff anymore, but former Knight assistant, ESPN basketball analyst Dan Dakich does a radio show in Indy and it's a scream. Lots of IU stories and he worked for Knight about as long as anyone else ever did before he went out on his own at BG.
I think eventually IU will need to forget getting an IU guy and just get the best coach available. I thought Tom Crean did a nice job there and sadly it wasn't enough for some of the boosters and he wasn't going to play the game with them. The Zeller/ Oladipo/ Yogi team was good enough to win it all, just came up short.
You do really wonder what would have happened at IU if they would had just kept Sampson around. Say what you want, the dude can coach and recruit. He had a national championship team the last few years but lost his best player due to injury.

I was good friends with Armon Bassett and I also knew Jordan Crawford. That 07 Indiana team was going to be good before Sampson got fired.

93 team if Henderson didn't get hurt..........

So, you may know some insight on that team. Dakich said most of that group, DJ White, Eric Gordon and company smoked pot and never went to class. Dakich was trying to clean the program up. That 07 team was really good. 22-4 with Sampson, lost 4 of their last 7 games, including the last 3. I know Gordon was dealing with a wrist injury much of that season.

Great gets for Indiana and the Big Ten. No reason that Indiana cannot be a top 15 team next season now
This is why I know you’re just a troll. You complain practically daily about Ohio St not having a shooter. Who in the hell can shoot outside of 5 feet on Indiana? I’ll answer that, nobody

Someone was mentioning shooters, apparently Luke Goode from Illinois is on his way to IU to join the Hoosiers. Not sure I'd say he's a deadeye, but he's got the reputation of being a shooter and for IU, we just need one or two guys that can spread the floor. Unfortunatley we've just not had that guy that can knock down open 3's to space the floor for a few years.

Cupps was playing his role this year, but I don't think you will ever see him average 10+ per game.

I think he can develop into an Aaron Kraft type of player, but his size will always limit him going to the basket. I do agree that he needs to become more of a capable and consistent 3 point shooter. He has a role on the team, but he's never going to be the main guy. He can impact winning distributing and playing pressure defense. But yes, has to knock down more outside shots.

So a few weeks ago, when Ke'lel Ware decided to go to the NBA, Indiana's prospects for the 24-25 season looked pretty bleak. Well, since then, IU has added Ballo, Goode, Carlyle and Rice from the transfer portal, and signed 5 star recruit Bryson Tucker. With Reneau, Galloway, Leal, Cupps and Newton coming back, suddenly the Hoosiers may be a contender in the big ten. Ballo and Goode are seniors with alot of college minutes under their belts and Carlyle and Rice both played significant roles as freshmen in major programs.

So Indiana finally got a group together for The Basketball Tournament TBT, called Assembly Ball. The only recognizable IU names was Yogi Ferrell, DVonte Greene, Juwon Morgan, Race Thompson, Jordan Hulls, Christian Watford and Miller Kopp. They won their first two regional games over Valparaiso and Purdue (yea!), but dropped the regional final to Eberline Drive. Kind of disappointing in that Morgan, Thompson nor Greene were there last night. I guess I don't really understand the TBT thing. I mean the Assembly Ball roster included Troy Williams and Noah Vonleh but neither was at any games? Can you take the team or this tournament seriously if you can't get guys to show up?
