Indiana Basketball 2023-24

Within 24 hours of announcing they were retaining Woodson...

A 5 star recruit that's their only signee in the 2024 class has requested his release.

Dumpster. Fire.

And it sounds like Scott Drew is heavily considering taking the Louisville job. Maybe next yr they can get a TJ Otzelberger from Iowa St? But he’s no Scott Drew.

Given Drew's background (Butler, Valparaiso, etc.) and his father's history coaching in the state, I would have figured Indiana would have been a major possibility if he ever wanted to leave Baylor.

seems like a great fit, especially with some of the shine wearing off Dusty May,

Per rumblings, it sounds like a big factor here was Woodson being lazy and putting little to no effort in to staying in contact and building the relationship once he had the kid's commitment. Probably got outworked big time during the in-season months by Bill Self and Kansas.

You get this a lot with NBA guys. They are awful in recruiting and don't apply the time/effort to that part of the job. For however much time Woodson remains, IU is going to be dependent on buying players in the portal with NIL and having to hope they just outspend competitors...much like NBA free agency.

Well, it's taken the entire season and the coaches head on the chopping block, but IU has now won 4 in a row. Not likely going to help this season as they'll have to win the big ten tournament to make the big dance, highly unlikely. I just don't think Woodson is the guy. Still don't think so. Who knows why McNeely decomitted, but is it really a loss? He's a big, he's a 3 or 4, and unless Reneau and Mgbako are gone, there may not be a spot for him. Galloway and Leal announced today they are returning, I don't think Mgbako will leave this season. Ware possibly but still hard to tell. IF , and this is big IF, Ware and Mgbako are back, this could be a really good team next season. My guess is IU is going to go recruit the transfer portal. We certaily know they have the $$'s to do it.

Maybe the best thing about IU's win over Michigan State is that we did to Michigan State what they do to most everyone else with bully ball. Ware and Reneau dominated the paint in that game and that just never happens with Izzo teams. And speaking of Izzo, when is the world going to catch up to the fact that the Spartans are just a normal program? Every year, they are preseason top 5 and by Christmas they have 4-5 losses and they are on the bubble now. Actually, watching them vs. IU the other day, I have no idea how they are ahead of IU?

Well, it wasn't a thing of beauty, but Indiana outlasted Penn State, avenging two losses earlier this year to the Nittany Lions. They have a chance to avenge two more losses tonight when they play Nebraska. Ironically, if they'd had either split or got 3-4 of these games earlier in the year, they'd be sitting at 21-22 wins and likely be in the big dance.
For some reason, since word got out that Woodson may be in trouble, these guys have responded, winning 5 in a row. Last night the Hoosiers even played without recent playmaker Trey Galloway and he may or may not be available tonight.
Happy today especially for IU senior Anthony Leal. He came into the program after a phenomenal career at local Bloomington South, was Mr. Basketball in Indiana in 2020. He never really saw alot of significant time until the latter part of this season. A high school coach's kid, he has all the intangibles that you look for in a player. He's a team first guy and a great locker room kid.
So last night, on the final possession, IU's Malik Reneau drove in a tie game to try to make a game winning shot. His shot was errant, but Leal slipped by a Penn State defender on the baseline and rebounded and put the ball back in all in one motion. With just a few seconds on the clock, a Penn State player had a good look at a 3 that would had won it, but it was short. Easily Leal's best moment as a Hoosier and something he'll never forget.

That was embarrassing to watch last night and to believe Woodson is coming back is unbelievable
I have no idea who's running things at Indiana. I get that Mike Woodson is like royalty, but this season was a disappointment and especially in some of the larger margin losses. There were times this team just lacked effort. And whoever's decision it was to not go to the NIT is WRONG. If it can help a few players get more game time in,it's worth it. IU is in a worse spot than when Archie was fired.

Meanwhile, the Buckeyes are trending up. It would be nice if Diebler could pull a Thad Matta and pull a couple stud prospects from the Hoosier state while there is uncertainty and underachievement with Woodson.

So the major question in Columbus is was Diebler that good that they were 100% behind him, or could they just not get anyone else to come? Obviously Diebler's body of work the last few weeks won him the opportunity, but wouldn't a guy like Lamont Paris at South Carolina made sense? Ohio kid, big ten ties? My question with the Buckeyes is why did they suddenly play hard for Diebler and didn't for Holtman??
My frustration with Woodson is he seems very tone deaf, becoming combative with some basic questions on why the season went sideways. Player development is becoming a big issue at IU. Kal'el Ware was the a first team big ten player many nights over the last month, and invisible others. Malik Reneau same thing. The lack of guard play is really hurting this program. Xavier Johnson, a 6th year transfer from Pitt was sometimes good, and sometimes the worst player on the floor. He was so bad and heralded frosh Gabe Cupps simply wasn't ready to take over that Trey Galloway became the impromptu point guard and creator. IU has had little perimeter shooting for years now and that's astounding in today's game.

One thing I hope Diebler improves upon is Holtmann’s hesitation to play young players while handing the team to mediocre transfer portal players simply because they have experience, not because they were more talented. That lack of development might be something Woodson has in common with Holtmann.

I'm amazed how fast OSU fans turned on Holtman. I like Holtman, I liked him enough that I'd rather seen him hired than Archie Miller years back. I hope it works out for Diebler, but I also wonder if the guys just were so anti-Holman that they played hard for Diebler or anyone who was the coach.

Indiana and Michigan both need good solid coaches to get this conference back to being good again
You are 100% correct. Lost in the NCAA Men's tournament is there are 3 big midwest fanbases who are not going to be tuned into the tournament quite as much as normal. Michigan, Indiana and Ohio State. I know alot of people like the underdog and the mid majors, but there are alot of schools that don't move the needle when it comes to ratings. Really pay attention to the Friday night/ Saturday night games for ratings. Teams like Florida Atlantic, San Diego State, BYU, Stetson, Duquesne, Grand Canyon, Charleston, Dayton, Longwood, Oakland, Utah St. Samford, Akron, and that's not all of them. Lots of very non descript teams on the big stage.

Much like the big ten is better in football when Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State are all good, big ten hoops is better when Indiana and Michigan are good.
No.

The big ten, and any conference, is better when their teams routinely make long postseason runs.

To think any conference is better when certain teams are good is a fallacy.

IU terrific sophomore center Kal'el Ware has made himself available for the NBA draft. Personally I feel it's a bad decision and hopefully he'll see in the combines and evaluations that he's not ready. He made some amazing strides in one season at IU and another year could push him in the top 10-15 in the '25 draft.

Let's face it.
Purdue is now, and has been for awhile, the face of basketball in the state of Indiana.

Remember back in they day Coach Keady wished they had "Indiana" somewhere in their name to get some respect....

Now THEY are the standard.

and that hurts to say.......

IU still has the banners to hang over Purdue's head, but you are right, over the last 20 years, Purdue has been the big brother for the state. Heck remember when Notre Dame was relevant?? How in the heck is Notre Dame basketball not better? I think because Purdue hasn't won national championships, Keady and Painter both have got more extra rope than the normal program. You have to love Purdue's culture though. They get guys that are committed to being there 3-4 years minimum. Other than Ivy a few years ago, they have lifers. Imagine this year's IU team with Braden Smith at the point?? I'll guarantee you he would had been worth 5-6 more wins easily. Our PG spot is so jacked up.

Anyway, BIG impact on the IU program if Ware returns or not.

Class of 2024 composite 5 star wing Bryson Tucker committed to the Hoosiers today.

Apparently missed or is not concerned about IU having been a burning dumpster fire this year. Massive pickup for Indiana for next year.

Well, I'll give this to Woody, he can get guys. Kind of quiet but significant news over the weekend is Mackenzie Mgbako will return for his sophomore season at IU. I think that's BIG. Let's just hope Ware decides to come back as well, although he has made himself available for the draft. Hopefully Tucker is the real deal and they can bring in a couple of shooter. Nice thing about IU is there will be resources to bring guys in with NIL deals.

Let's hope this kid is everything he's billed up to being. We really need to hit on some recruits.

One thing is for certain, there is no more runway for Woodson. IU has to win next season, they need to contend for a big ten title and make the NCAA tournament and get a round or two in - AT MINIMUM. The standards at IU has sunk so low, and Purdue's success, even Indiana State's has put the Hoosiers on the back burner and that simply does not happen in that state.

Malik Reneau - when not in foul trouble, is an excellent big ten player and even carried the Hoosiers at times this season.
Gabe Cupps - big time year for him, weather he was expected to contribute much or not this year, he certainly had his chances and for a kid who scored at the big high school level in Ohio, he looked like offense was foreign to him this past season. Ball handling, defense I thought he was fine, but in today's college basketball, you have to be a threat on offense.
Trey Galloway - He was forced into the primary ball handling role because he could actually make some things happen. Not ideal but he was the best we had. Somehow, someway let's hope he can develop a more consistent jumper.
Anthony Leal - A guy who wasn't expected to do much ended up being a glue guy for this team. His role should remain the same.

This core by itself doesn't look too imposing. But if Tucker is a true 5 star, and you can add some shooters, this could become a dangerous team.
