Hoover's New wrestling Coach

The new wrestling coach has been named. I have heard a lot of people saying that it should be a graduate from the Walt Tolarchyk Era. Well, how about Walt's son David? He has been named the new head coach of the wrestling program.

What are your thoughts about the new coach? What are your thoughts about hiring the sons of past coaches? This is the 2nd second generation coach that we currently have at Hoover.

Last year, most of the team were freshman. I have heard many people say that was because of the coach. People said the coach was driving kids away from the wrestling program. With the new coach, will more kids be going out for wrestling next year?

Good luck and congratulations to the new Wrestling Coach Dave Tolarchyk. I know that he was a great asset to the NW wrestling program.

Also welcome as a second generation coach !:)

Walt was awesome, I remember him in Health class. He gave my friend a detention for calling him Walt.

New Coach

I recently discovered this forum and am fascinated by the contentious nature exhibited by so many. It's like Jerry Springer in print. It also is interesting that so many people have so much time on their hands that they can spend it arguing about subjects they really have very little knowledge about or should even be involved with. Isn't this supposed to be Hoover HIGH SCHOOL Wrestling? Many of the postings are about a coach who was first treated as the king of wrestling, the homeboy come back to roost; to bring back the honor and history of Hoover Wrestling. Suddenly, because he had a mind of his own, a hard work ethic and a belief in turning out honorable young men, he became the scape goat for a great deal of pent-up hostility. Shame on you all! Don't you all know how to play nicely with each other? Most of you need to work on your social skills, spelling and better communication ability. Now comes Dave Tolarchyk, scion of a wrestling legend. The poor man has to live up to his father's reputation so he won't disappoint those still living in the past while developing a team badly disjointed by the worrisome meddling of people who should be watching their own home fires. May God go with Mr. Tolarchyk, because the wrestling parents won't be with him for long. One misstep, one drill deemed too hard, one fragile young man kicked out for his lack of interest or general stupidity and the next wave will begin to get rid of Coach Tolarchyk! The good Lord Himself could not solve the real problems you people have.

First of all, nobody has said anything bad towards the former coach. In the original post, I made some statements about things I have heard in the past. I was trying to figure out what people think will change now that there is a different coach. I wasn't agreeing with the things that had been said, I was just wondering what other people thought of the new coach and how it will affect the program.

As far as the "pent up hostility", I don't see that. I see a lot of people that have seen Hoover as a good wrestling school and something has been missing. The parents just want the best for their kids and they didn't think they had that. Maybe they were right, maybe they were wrong. Either way, they are just doing what they think is best for their kids. You can't really blame them for that. Any coach of any sport has to expect that pressure from parents and has to learn to deal with that pressure. The best way to deal with that pressure is to have a successful program. The old saying "You can't argue with success" would apply here. If you have a successful program, the arguments will be kept to a minimum. If you aren't seeing much success, people are going to want a change.

I am not saying that I agree or disagree with the decision to change coaches. I haven't been involved with the program enough to say whether it was right or wrong. I know that I saw some things I didn't care for, but I am not the coach. If I knew the reasons for the things I didn't like, maybe I would change my mind. Because I don't know the reasons, I am not going to say whether those things are right or wrong. There may have been reasons that only he knows and that is his decision as a coach. But when you make those decisions, you have to expect repercussions.

I coach youth baseball, and I know that no matter what you do, you will NEVER make everyone happy. You have to do what is best for the team and go on from there. Keeping people informed about your decisions and the reasons for your decisions is one way to limit the repercussions. Some information is best kept to yourself, but in those cases you have to realize that people are going to question the decision because they don't know the reasoning behind it. Coaching is more than just teaching, it is just as much, if not more, public relations.

At the same time, I also agree with you that parents should allow a coach to do his job without interfering. That is what he gets paid to do, let him do it. Everyone has a different style of coaching and just because his style isn't the same as yours does not make it wrong.

Now that I have gotten that out, let's get back to the topic. Whether it was right or wrong, there has been a coaching change in the Hoover wrestling program. That change cannot be reversed now. I want to know what people think about the new coach and the future of the program. I don't want to look backwards, I want to look forward without losing sight of the past.

Where does the program go from here? What would you like to see change? What do you think will change? What expectations do you have of the new coach?

Re: Re: New Coach

I would suggest that if you are not happy with this forum that you stay off it and it will not irritate you. You have your own agenda and always have had it. No one is perfect - not even you. This angry, agitated, obnoxious response of yours is like the pot calling the kettle brown, er, black I mean. Get on with your perfect life. May God bless you.

In your message I quote" because he had a mind of his own, a hard work ethic and a belief in turning out honorable young men, he became the scape goat for a great deal of pent-up hostility", you do not have the facts. Shame on you!

This is about Hoover High School Wrestling, and the coach is a part of the wrestling program. You really need to work on your social skills and try to improve on your communication ability. You come across as having a great deal of pent-up hostility. Shame on you!

RudyNCH,
The post you made in response to wrestlemania2005 was great and very accurate.

It was reported to me last week that David Tolarchyk would be the new Hoover wrestling coach. Apparently that report was wrong. I guess he was offered the position and turned it down. So now the search continues.

Rudy,

I do not know much about the Hoover wrestling situation, but I will agree with your comment stating that coaches can never make everyone happy, regardless of the level of play.

I HIGHLY doubt they'd hire him. He would definitely not be qualified for the job.

Hopefully we'll get some news about the situation soon.

I am do not believe that he has a chance at the high school job. He is not high school coach material. He would probably be a very good lifting and training coach for the Marines or at a military basic training camp.

I heard he got a head coaching job at another school, but I can't remember what school it was.
