Garfield Heights D2 District Preview

Big changes from 2022 to 2023 - District moved from Alliance to Perry, and now to Garfield Heights.
Lake Catholic, Aurora, Perry out. Medina Buckeye, Streetsboro in.
Please let me know of any mistakes or if I am missing anyone notable. Tried to go about 10 deep per weight.

Yarbrough, a projected state champ, is the clear favorite here - and I really like the top four as locks. Nelson from CVCA dropped to 106 and Czanecki moved to 113.

Limbert, a projected state champ is another clear favorite - and stands alone as a lock. Everything else is wide open, with 8 guys in the top 15 of BF rankings.

This is one of the weaker weights at the district with only two projected podium guys. Perez is a HUGE cutter (126 last season), this past weekend I am unsure if he was ill, or if he cut too much but he seemed to be hugging the trash can. That is something to note on day 1 with weigh outs, though he is a heavy favorite here. Miller has been back and forth at 20/26 but will likely be at 20 for post season based off the field at 26.

Skinner, a projected (returning) state champ is another favorite here. This is the toughest weight in the tournament. 8 guys in the top 15. Heckman has a h2h win over Barker earlier this year, but Barker had a very one sided 14-3 win at EOWL. Heckman has an 8-4 dec over Burt, and Barker has a 4-0 dec over Burt. Scharrer has been in and out for Canfield.
* I am told Pina-Lorenzana is out for the remainder of the season.

Paes, a projected state champ is another clear favorite here. Fielding is an out of state - state placer, who suffered his first loss of the season this past weekend at TopGun to D'Alessandro (3-1). Rhoads looks like a safe lock. Dunlap has some nice wins and Rickenbacher made a decent run last year at 138, and same with Leffel at 126. Hobbs (Benedictine) has been at 138 but dropped to 132 due to Dolan (Benedictine) dropping to 138.

Badiu swapped places with teammate Brunst at 144. Brunst was a top four guy here, so not much changes down low. If Stricko is down at 138 I like him as a slight favorite over Badiu. The top four here all of a chance to podium.

Hoffarth, a projected (returning) state champ, is another clear favorite. I like Stecker and Craddock at 2 and 3. 4th spot seems rather wide open. Stecker has h2h win over Frank 8-0. Frank has h2h win over Dirienzo 7-6.

This is the deepest district in D2 at 157. 15 guys are ranked via BF. King is your 1 here, and despite the deepness, it is rather wide open the rest of the way with 12 guys in the top 20. Look for some 157's to go down to 150.

Neitenbach is a very clear favorite to win this and serves as the only lock. This weight is wild with head to heads and is wide open.

Also to note - Eddy (Alliance) has been at 190 for seemingly all duals this year, and 175 for tournaments. Could see him at 190 for this.

Snider was a clear favorite here at 215, and especially 190. Thomas is a very respectable 2 here and suffered his only loss so far this season to Haines (Minerva) 4-0. The rest of the weight is up for grabs. Wheatley made a nice run at districts last season.

Todd Allen, a 2021 state champ, is the clear favorite here. Heavy is very deep here, having 15 ranked kids. After Allen, Bowser and Kamperman look to be the other locks. Kamperman won the most recent h2h vs Bowser (EOWL). The back end of these guys can and have beat each other, making the fourth spot rather wide open.

I was thinking maybe the Northeast was down a bit this year in D2 (maybe wishful thinking...). But with the addition of Buckeye and Streetsboro (both top 10 as a team at Norwalk last year), Madison from D1 to D2, and add in some tough guys from Holy Name, Benedictine, and others.

This district will be very competitive and deep. I think we see alot of successful qualifiers from this district the following week in Columbus.

After being at top gun over the weekend, it reminded me how much I enjoyed them hosting and really hope that it heads back there soon.

6/14 projected state champs coming out of 1 district is hard to beat in terms of difficulty.

Garfield Heights certainly has some big shoes to fill. Alliance always did a great job running the tournament smooth and efficiently. Perry ran a nice much more size friendly tournament as well. I have never been to Garfield Heights; however, I have heard good things.

Officiated the Div 3 Districts at Garfield Hts. a number of times, and it was very well run. An added perk was that they used 5 mats instead of the traditional 4 one finds at most districts. It was nice to get out early even doing three rounds. Perry district on the other hand was more like a zoo. Tournament ran well, the wrestling was excellent, but the crowds were often within a few feet of the mat (kind of like the Ironman). Minor altercations were not uncommon. LOL

All three NE districts are going to use 5 mats on Friday.
 
I think Hoover used five mats last year on Friday, though I am not 1000% sure on that.

D2 at Garfield Hts is EVERY school in the NE district this year. The NE lost a sectional, one that the Central picked up. The district in the NW has three NW sectionals and a Central sectional now.

Though there is a talent shrink (slightly) among the schools that were in the all-NE district last year, which was at Perry, that is recovered by picking up the schools that went to Norwalk last year from the NE district.

In terms of Alliance, they decided not to host the previous two years. If they want to host, I would think they could get something.
