Federal League All Sports Trophy

I recently learned that Hoover has taken the lead in the competition for the
All Sports Trophy. If this is so, as I posted on the Jackson board it is very interesting that the two leading academic schools in the county also seem to have a lock on this trophy. I think it says a lot for the school, students, and the teachers and coaches involved. Other schools in the league can make all the noise they want about various topics but academicaly and athleticly the Hoover and Jackson students are head and shoulders over the  rest of the county.

I mentioned over there that off the eighteen years so far, the last fifteen titles have been won by Jackson (9) or Hoover (6). Perry won the first one and GO the next two - after that, it's been all purple and orange.

By the way - the Spring season is far from over, so I wouldn't count my chickens yet. The biggest decisions will come from softball, as you get an extra point for taking first place. If either team sweeps the season series, they will almost certain win the title. Tonight is the first game of that.

Well, you may be able to feel awfully secure about that softball title after Hoover downed Jackson 5-4 in 9 innings on Friday night. The Vikings now have a two game lead over the Polar Bears. :(

Way to go girls keep it going.

Current Update:

Jackson retains their 5-2/3 point lead on Hoover from the winter season, by earning a wash with the Vikes in tennis and track. ONLY softball and baseball remains.

Softball: Hoover will win the FLC and earn 9 points. Jackson should take 2nd or 3rd and get 6-7 points. Net difference: Hoover +2 or +3

Baseball: Looks like Hoover will either win the league or take 2nd, while Jackson winds up in 4th or 5th place. Net difference: Hoover +5 to +2.

Thus, we could get anywhere from Hoover only getting four points to Hoover going up 8 points. That said, it is very possible, in fact, it's probable looking at the remaining games, that Hoover will earn JUST enough to overcome Jackson's lead and win by a mere 1/3 to 1-1/3 points.

Talk about EVERY game seriously mattering during some seasons! One add'l win or loss in ANY sport may end up having swayed the race this year.

Another update:

Softball: My assumption is that Hoover will win (already known) the FLC and Jackson will take 2nd. This will shrink Jackson's 5-2/3 point lead over Hoover down to 3-2/3 points.

Now about baseball. Currently, Hoover is alone in first place at 9-3, while Jackson sits at #5 with a 7-7 record in the FL. If the season were to end at that, Hoover would gain 9 points to Jackson's four, and win the All-Sports trophy by 1-1/3 points.

However, should Hoover be forced to share that title (i.e. 8 points), and Jackson shares 4th place (i.e. 4.5 points) - both VERY likely possibilities, Hoover would only gain 3-1/2 points of the 3-2/3 needed, and Jackson would win the title by a mere 1/6 point!

Talk about an amazing finish to the 2005-2006 sports season - can't get much closer than this!

Congratulations Hoover! It is now CONFIRMED that the Vikings have won the All-Sports trophy this year - their 5th in a row.

Hoover has clinched at least a win by 1/3 of a point, and that could jump up to as high as a 1-5/6 point win, dependent on how Lake and McK finish in baseball.
