Elder Enrollment Strategy

was with a lasalle administrator over the weekend and he said their numbers are actually up and expect to be in the 135-140 for next year

135-140 is low and really low compared to a few years ago when they had a class of around 220. Since then they’ve had 3 very small classes.

EHS2001: Why was the 3 Rivers thread shut down?

I’m sure OSP or Pboy ruined that thread like every other one but that’s just my guess! The bad apples usually ruin it for all and those 2 are without a doubt bad apples! They will get banned (again) and keep coming back to spew non sense! OSP &Pboy are nothing but top notch Clowns!!

Don Flamenco and I decided the thread outlived its usefulness. If there's any concrete news out of Columbus in the coming days or weeks regarding the issue, feel free to start a new thread about it. This forum would be better off without participation from those whose sole intention is to argue for the sake of argument.

OK.

I know I’m culpable in this. I do try to be fact based and provide information as I can’t stand it when people lob accusations like ?? did.

Also, the amount of mis/disinformation out there about the state of the government school system is out of control. If people really understood the actual state of many (not all) government schools, enrollment in Catholic schools would be easier. Years back I gave a speech at a Catholic school on orientation night, I mentioned that in central Ohio 21 of 23 school districts were rated "Excellent" or "Excellent with Distinction" and it was a distinction without distinction. Talk about participation trophies.

This is fair - but the Cathloic school systems also has some warts as well. I have no issue with people being on one side or the other, but at least be open to the other perspective.

This is true. There is NO perfect school -government or private. I pay for my kids to go to certain Catholic schools. But, there are others I would not pay for them to go.

The Original question asked how does Elder figure out a way to attract eastside students. How about this....Elder doesn't need to. We've been hearing all this doomsday bs from some people who love spouting doomsday bs. End of story. Elder is fine. Not great...more numbers will make it great...but Elder is fine. I trust the plans they have in place which none of you are privy to are solid....Elder has always found a way and that's why they'll graduate their 100th class in two years with the class of 2022. I roll my eyes and smile when everyone starts jumping in on the Sky is Falling talk about Elder. Hilarious. Cute even.

I didn’t read your post, but wanted to congratulate you on screen name #5!

You're not wrong, but this ruling around vouchers is very important. If upheld, they will prosper.

If changed, it will be much tougher. Certainly doable, but much harder to get kids in the door. I think most people realize the "gloom and doom" is looking decades out if things didn't start to increase.

All of the back and forth makes it seem like Elder is in immediate trouble. I don't think anyone believes that. Also, Elder will never consistently attract eastside kids, and that's fine.

I believe the "doomsday" talk is more about wanting Elder to be around for another 100 years long after we're all 10 feet in the ground. I'm sure Mercy graduates, teachers, students all thought Mercy was "fine", not "great", but "fine". The westside is just not the same as it was 20 years ago. The landscape is changing thanks in large part to what the city is doing to it.

Is Elder fine right now? Yes, of course. Smart people are thinking long term.

I agree with you, ElderHSfan02. But Mercy's mistake(s) was much more convoluted than what Elder is faced with. Factors beyond what Elder is facing was part of Mercy's demise. And maybe "demise" is not fair, but if we are honest, neither school (Mercy or McCauley) wanted to do a merge. It was not their first choice. Situations specific to each school caused the need for a merge. Those situations, although rooted somewhat in enrollment, had factors deeper than anything Elder is facing.

Does anyone know if Coronavirus Pandemic has affected enrollment. A few family members have told me the school sent out email/letters that the failing school district grant was taken away. If so how many incoming students will this affect.

I don’t think that’s right. With the pandemic, the Ed choice was extended with I think the same rules as last year.

How is Ed choice funded? I don't think the State or Federal government will have money for Edchoice. I could definitely be wrong. Any government program will be on an extreme budget crunch thanks to the virus. Remember Dewine's gas tax? I don't think that is generating anything much right now. Casinos closed. The ripple effect is unimaginable. This could be the death of smaller private schools if enrollment drops a large amount.

Who in their right mind would pay for a private school when you are not in school?

First time poster, long time reader. Thought I’d enter the discussion searching for things to do.

Interesting question this poses as I will admit I’ve had the same thought about the cost of education in this environment. I have one at Elder now and I simply can’t justify paying tuition for this arrangement next year. If others have children On this forum in private schools, do you know if there are plans to adjust this if distance learning and no extra curriculars continues? it seems like a fair question.

You can’t just send a bill and expect payment in this reality can you? Maybe it’s too early to decide that for next year.

Someone called into 700 today who has a kid at St.X and MND. He said: "Why would I pay tuition for what is going on now?" I think a lot of people, rightfully, will be asking that question.

Will be interesting how parents approach enrollments for next year. If there is distance learning, can the school do anything to get government support like small businesses? If kids can’t physically attend school (or participate in extracurricular activities), who is going to pay tuition when they can get credits for free at a public school?
