I believe that the law in Ohio, maybe just Cincinnati, states that drivers must yield to pedestrians waiting to cross at a crosswalk. I personally would not step into the street until I knew that it was completely safe due to the fact that most drivers do not yield.
I know plenty of people who have smoked for 20-30 years, function very well, and have never graduated onto something harder. I think the problem is the fact that it has become so normalized. Police are not stopping anyone for it so it encourages public use. I feel the same way about alcohol. I do not want people drinking while walking down the street or especially while driving.
The alternative is a nightmare. If I am a pedestrian or cyclist I will wait until the coast is clear. I have no issue doing so. There are places in FL where any pedestrian can hit a button, flashing lights ensue and traffic comes to a halt. The problem is people do not even bother looking to see if perhaps they can wait until there is an opening and they blindly walk up and hit the button and cross. In a 2 miles stretch I have been stopped multiple times on one pedestrians desire to cross an essentially non-busy street.
Which is exactly what they should do, stay behind the stop bar. Covering the space between the stop bar and the middle of the intersection once you're sure on-coming is clear and the left safe to take, takes no time at all. Anyone thinking otherwise has their head up their .

Moving over before the lane runs out actually makes no sense.Two lanes narrowing down to one with most people waiting patiently in the open lane (often in a construction zone). Always some who blow by "the patients" to squeeze in at the last moment because - of course - they are more important than "the patients". Near accident at rush hour today.

Yeah, a pickup with side mirrors sticking out 3 feet on both sides. You ever try to get a back door open with a pickup with big mirrors backed lnto the parking space beside you and you have a kid you are trying to get in the car seat? If your mirror was folded in, that was me.
I try to walk 4 to 5 miles everyday. I have learned to wait to cross in the crosswalk. I would like to have a dollar every time I've seen someone run a red light.

Similiar to this: drivers who stop in traffic to let another out of a parking lot. Yes, generous is nice but, a sprinkle of common sense is good, too.

I'm okay with them except...
I see something similar where by the person is following me close enough (while I'm in the passing lane) that I move over to let them go by. Only to find them going slower a few miles down the road, and they are now "blocking" the left lane. I see a lot of women do this. They seem to be just following along in the left lane, once you move out of the way, they don't know how to keep driving fast.

The buttons in Toledo do not work. This is in tourist FL sections. Any Joe can walk up, hit the button and traffic must stop. I really do not have an issue but wish the pedestrian would at least look first. You might have one car coming and you could simply let them pass without hitting the button.
