After seeing this sad news about Bob Shane, I thought a little about The Kingston Trio. My first reaction, other than them being one of the top folk groups, was that at John Denver and Michael Johnson ("Bluer Than Blue") were once part of the group. Then I realized that both of those singers were part of The Chad Mitchell Trio. The Kingston Trio had some very popular singles ("Tom Dooley", "Where Have All The Flowers Gone", etc.), but my favorite has always been "M.T.A". I guess I still wonder if Charlie ever got off that train or if he's riding forever 'neath the streets of Boston as the man who never returned. :)

You don't want to tick off girls with nails and hair. I've never been in a fight except with my sisters when I was an adolescent.

We have quite the snowstorm tonight. Hubby is home, no more traveling this week.

Valentine's Day plans , anyone? I'm making a German chocolate cake ? ( from scratch, naturally), for my husband. He could eat it all day, every day. I don't require flowers, jewelry, etc. He resents the made-up holiday that compels people to do what is expected of them. He does not like feeling obligated to do Valentine things. I understand and agree.

What are your feelings about Valentine's Day?
 
Every school around here is on a delay. There will be closings by morning. Nice, wet, soft and pretty snow. One of the nice things about being out of town - snow is a great calming element at night. Biggest snow since Nov. 11th. Three months ago! Lows tomorrow night and Friday night will be as cold as it has been since the nights after that Nov. snow.

Had a flat tire today about a mile from the house and drove it home. Not pretty!

Valentine- it's ok; small gifts.

The girl involved in the hair yanking incident (the injured girl was seriously injured and has concussive problems, will not play ball, again, and is experiencing vision problems plays for Bellevue (as OWK indicated)). The Lady Red are ranked second in Ohio and have serious state potential. Ther star players for Bellevue are the Santoro sisters. Senior Casey Santoro was the hair puller. I believe at least two other sisters have moved through the program and one played at B.G. The girls' dad is the coach. Interestingly enough, Lady Red lost its first game of the year after this one. OHSAA involved and I am not sure where this is all going.

See the Stones are doing 15 cities this summer and one is Cleveland. The tour is called the No Filter tour. Tickets range in price from $49 to $400. All the guys are in the late 70's. Bill Wyman who no longer tours with the band is in his 80's. We covered this before but Bill W.'s son, (Marlon, I believe) married the mother of a girl that his dad was dating or married to, thus becoming, bizarrely the step father-in-law to his dad!!!!

The band members are: Mick and Keith are 76, Charlie Watts is 78, Ronnie Wood 72, and Wyman is 83.

Upper's boys have won 18 in a row since an opening season loss to Willard and stand a decent chance of getting to the Regionals which would be the first such trip since the state champ team of 2004-2005.

10-4! When my wife worked as a secretary at a high school 15 years ago, she told me girls would fight in the hallway pretty often, usually over a boy, and the battles could get vicious.

As soon as each altercation was over, she and the other secretaries would walk down the hall and pick up the hairpieces that invariably ended up on the floor in the aftermath. She said they kept a special box for them for the students to claim after they served their suspensions.

Patting myself on the back. This year I had a nice flower arrangement with roses delivered to Mrs. Z at her office today (delivery is cheaper the day before VD). Tomorrow morning she'll get a card and some candy, I'll take her to dinner at Texas Roadhouse, and finally a blues band at Scioto Downs to cap off the evening.

Now, here it goes somewhat like this. We don't necessarily eat out because we do that every weekend so tonight is nothing special.

I bought her c.d.'s by Halsey and Tanya Tucker. I bought myself the book A Stable Genius. She bought a bouquet of flowers "for me". Right. They are nice - we have lots of things growing in the spring and summer so we are both fine with that.

I went out and got my daughter an arrangement - a mix so to speak of springy type flowers. And since we saw "Little Women" last week I got her a copy of that.

Remember as a kid Valentine boxes? When we exchanged Valentines at school they were the real cards and we just bought for whom we wanted. I would always give a really special one for whoever my latest crush was and boldly use the "Love" in there somewhere as my ending.

When my kids did this, all of the students got one from everyone and they were those tiny things that consisted of a half of paper.

Speaking of things done poorly back then. Even then kids celebrated birthdays, usually with a drop off treat. EXCEPT - for summer birthday kiddos. Seriously, the entire time I was in grade school, my August birthday was never celebrated Not even a "catch all" for all of the summer birthdays

That would lead to countless law suits today!
 
Few weeks back, accidentally stumbled across several online videos that someone took (back in the day) of a couple of local bands playing at some local dive bars. Crazy seeing my buddies (both in the crowd and in the bands) and myself (and my future spouse!) at these shows 30 years ago (didn’t even remember anyone videotaping back then, lol). There were even a couple of videos of the band that eventually played at our wedding reception. Showed my kid, who couldn’t get over how different and cool it all seemed back then compared to now. That said, seeing Mom and Dad as anything other than dork parents was almost too much to handle, lol.

Anyways, thinking back on that time and those videos, was reminded of a song I was into at the time. Know it’s not everyone’s taste, but with it being V-Day and all, this former punk-jock (huh?) is gonna throw some punk rock ‘love’ songs out there, just for fun: ?

Started with BlackHawk bringing up the home movies of him and his brothers singing Tom Dooley, which made me think of the local band videos that I had just discovered online (that I was in). Then, you mentioned things done poorly back in the day, which contrasted with my kid’s opinion of the good ol’ days (from watching the old band videos). That, along with all the talk of V-Day, of course, lol. :)
 
We're all of the age that the things we used to do in our glory days are actually cool again.

Hubby and I went to my favorite restaurant last night in Findlay, Outback Steakhouse. I've never had a bad sirloin there. I have a recipe for their rub they put on the steaks that we tried on our own Omaha steaks one night. It was pretty darn close but too much paprika. I will adjust it.

Going to see "1917" Monday at his request, definitely not mine. We're pretty good at indulging each other. After four decades together, it's easy.
 
1917 is a great movie and great movie making. We are going to see Parasite with our kids and respective "others" Is seeing Parasite with your children redundant in someway?!
 
A question and a "discovery" for me.

Q - when I watch a you tube video or listen to a song the little spinny when that is suppose to go around for a few seconds until it opens up comments from whoever does not stop spinning. Therefore, no comments. I feel as though I have hit the wrong bottom sometime in the past. This has been doing this for over a month.

D - Dianna Krall - torchy, jazzy breathless singer. Sort of a throw back. Think Peggy Lee but Hollywood attractive. Lot of stuff by her out there - new to me.
Listen to her version of anything but if you are feeling it, listen to her do Christmas Time Is Here. It's all good. Ok - married to Elvis Costello for the past 17 years.

I cannot imagine how you stumbled across that nugget, " Cinnamon Cinder " by The Pastel Six. I have to believe that
it has probably been about 57 years since I have heard that song. I vaguely remembered the name of the song, but did remember that it was a dance named for a teen nightclub out in California.. The song came out as I was entering my senior year in HS and I think Columbus radio station WCOL played it a few times and that was the end of it until I just read your recent post.

I was intrigued enough to listen to it on YouTube and barely remembered it. I know many times on your musical trips down memory lane I either still have the single or the album you mention, but that's not the case here. I never owned the 45 and can't imagine they ever released an album ! I basically hated the song at the time and it hasn't grown on me since 1962/63 either.

I can't remember if I included it on my trivia quiz a couple of years ago on "One Hit Wonders" quiz. Most likely I considered it too obscure and left it off. I am curious how you even came upon this chestnut ???? I do have a large collection of vinyl greatest obscure hits and may take a look when I have some free time and see if it might be included on some of those Rhino Records "Nuggets" as this song sounds like a candidate for one of those collections. Good to see you writing again as this site has been really slow all winter.

I believe all of us would Iike to keep the site rolling (crawling) along, if for no other reason than to note the passing of our heroes from decades past. Sort of a bottle of Cognac approach.

On Cinnamon Cinder, is it just me or did you notice that it has a slight resemblance to the Peppermint Twist ((Meet me baby down at 47th. street. Where the Peppermint twisters meet.") My geography might be off a bit but it seemed like The Pastels were singing about a place to go and the tune was familiar.

As far as how I stumbled on to it, our Direct TV has a lot of music stations; everything from Rap to Blue Grass, Malt Shop and Big Band. So, when I am really bored with what's on, I venture to those stations. Cinnamon Cinder (which also may qualify as the worse title ever for a song) was on there yesterday.

This was when I also stumbled into Dianna Crall. One of those stations plays only Christmas songs, year round. I heard Crall do the Charlie Brown song (Christmas Time Is Here) on that station. When I run through the music channels,I always stop at the Christmas station just to hear what's being played. I melt for Christmas Time Is Here by almost anyone (unless it would be the Pastel Six).

(Haven't had a lot of OSU hoop talk this year. Yet, I watch all games. Very frustrating group, to be generous. Was really enjoying Carton - hope he is ok. And, although our babe list has long been relegated to the scrap heap of "bad boys, being bad", Dianna Crall belongs on it.

I also stumbled across Joan Osborn doing What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted and Beast Of Burden - both live. Outstanding! If you have never seen these please check them out. (Put Joanie on that list, also.)

I didn't mention it, but Mrs. OWK and I attended a concert, "Doo Wop III", last week and it was very good. Kenny Vance and The Planotones were the headliners, but LaLa Brooks (The Crystals) was also very good. Kenny Vance is a favorite of mine. He was a co-founder of Jay and The Americans. Although he has a good voice, he had to sing backup to the original "Jay" (Jay Trainor) and the more popular and recognizable "Jay" (Jay Black). Interestingly, Jay Black is a stage name and his real name is David Blatt, just like the former Cleveland Cavaliers coach. Due to a number of reasons, Jay Black left the group and Kenny Vance started his own career. He is considered one of the experts when it comes to Doo Wop. He either appeared or supervised the music for such movies as Animal House, American Hot Wax, Eddie and the Cruisers, Hollywood Knights, Hairspray and Looking for an Echo (which is also a song). Vance was also instrumental is promoting Steely Dan and later formed his own group, The Planotones (after the fictitious group in American Hot Wax). I have always found Jay and The Americans very interesting since members of their group have gone on to other things. Jay Black, an addicted gambler, had to sell the name Jay and The Americans to pay off some debts. The backup members of the group, minus Kenny Vance, bought the name and perform today with a new "Jay" (Jay Reincke). Before The Americans, Reincke was working for a carpeting company in Chicago and performing on the side (he imitated Jay Black, Elvis and others).

Jay Black, despite his talents (his nickname is "The Voice"), has had a series of self-imposed problems. Besides his bankruptcy due to gambling, some of his acquaintances are more than highly questionable. He was good friends with gangster John Gotti and supposedly attended each day of Gotti's final trial. He also sang "Cara Mia" at John Gotti's daughter's wedding. I don't know if I mentioned it on the AARP Thread, but I had a chance to meet Jay Black in a very unusual way. Let me know if I already mentioned the story or if you'd like to read about it. By the way, Jay Black thought that he was portrayed as Johnny Fontaine in the movie The Godfather, but the character was most likely based on Frank Sinatra's life. Whatever the case, there's lots of crazy stuff involved with Jay (all three of them) and The Americans.

As many of you know, during basketball season I'm pretty busy and don't get too many chances to visit this site. You'll be happy to know that it's not all basketball, all the time. Mrs. OWK and I try to make room for music, as well as other things. This Sunday night we're going to see Rod Stewart at the Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood (FL). I've never attended a Rod Stewart concert, so I'm looking forward to it.

Sorry that I haven't done my share. I just have a few important medical issues that I'm trying to have solved. When my crack specialists make me as good as new, you won't be able to shut me up! :) :)

I had a slice and dice session with my dermatologist yesterday. He always finds a few more than anticipated.

We'll all keep on producing content - just might be slower and it more than likely will be redundant!

Hey, it sounds like we are all up on the rack more than we want ... but carry on we must! I had two appts. canceled by the doctors last week. One, is going to a conference in Jamaica - the other to Japan! I feel like I am paying for some of this!!

That's an accurate description! I'm missing out on announcing several juco basketball tournament games because of a joint replacement next week, which hopefully will make me more "hip". Then, as soon as I am up and about where Mrs. Z doesn't have to worry about me, she will be having her knee swapped out for a newer model. By this fall, we should have at least two good limbs between the two of us.

Hope everyone else also comes off the injured reserve list soon, as well. :)
