Doubledribble, the AARP Boys and Diva

I love a rainy night...Eddie Money?

We got married in August of 1980-. First night of honeymoon was in hotel in Dayton, then drove to Myrtle Beach. Through the mountains it rained like crazy and I remember hearing that song.....

Bevo sets us up for a little mini quiz:

I like the cool nights as I feel more relaxed and not compelled to be outside doing some chore. Love the rainy, fall nights. The L.L. Bean fall/winter catalog showed up today and h.s. and college football get it going this weekend.

Name the artist:

"...(Such a) Rainy Night in Georgia... :

"I Love a Rainy Night..." :

"Nights are Forever Without You..." :
For your 3rd title, I will submit a duo that I really, really liked.....England Dan & John Ford Coley.

Thanks for this, coldshoulder ?.

Monclova with a correct answer. Either England Dan or John Ford Coley was a brother to either Seals or Crofts. How's that for a total lack of specificity? I really liked the duo's I'd Really Like to See You Tonight.

As long as we are moseying around with either rain, night or both, here's three more:

I climbed up in the cab all wet and cold and lonely.

I don't think that I can take it 'cause it took so long to bake it.

We sailed into the sunset, drifting home caught by a gulf stream.

Personal note: Monclova and I both turn 68 on Friday. Fifty years ago that night, I was at a dance with two friends in little Sycamore, Ohio listening to an Upper Sandusky band playing outside on a basketball court. We were celebrating me being able to drink legally. The brew was "Little Dukes" out of Cleveland; 48 small bottles in a case! We were "attacked" and roughed up by some local toughs. The guys in the band played on and did not help us.

So, Monclova, if I had a Little Duke I'd share one with you and tip to our lives and the sound of clock's tick, tock, tick, tock... .
Bevo, bevo, bevo.....my birthday brother in arms.
Sorry to hear about your 18th. Sux getting roughed up -- even sacrilegious when you think about it. I hope you got to enjoy your 3.2 beer, though (unless you whippersnappers "found" some hi-octane 6%).
Mine -- which is actually the 3rd -- but I truly thank you for being so considerate that you have remembered how close we are in our youngness (as we like to call it, eh?).
Funny. I grew up in Cincinnati, but I spent most of my 18th birthday right down the road from you at BGSU. Our legion team won the title game of the Midwest Regional there that day against a team from Illinois. Definitely a highlight of my young life.
Yes, I would love to tip one with you anytime, anywhere, for any reason.
Enjoy this Friday, my friend; and many, many more. ✌

Well, since we're rolling all of a sudden, I'll take #2 for $1M.

"Summer Rain" by one of my all-time favs (remember that from the 60s?) Johnny Rivers.

It's so, so melancholy and sweet. RR HOF for Mr. Rivers. "And the juke box kept on playing Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts' Club Band".

Yes to Brook Benton/ "Rainy Night In Georgia." But was originally written by Tony Joe White ("Polk Salad Annie").
Yes to Eddie Rabbit/ "I Love a Rainy Night".
And yes to England Dan and John Ford Coley / "Nights Are Forever Without You".

RR HOF for him is sooooo overdue. I mean, KISS and ABBA -- IN; Johnny Rivers -- OUT. Why does this make any sense at all?

England Dan's real name is Dan Seals.

I can feel the tension on these and it is unbearable.

Sorry that I missed the mini-quiz. Mrs. OWK's and I just got back to Miami after two weeks in NE Ohio. We really enjoyed our trip and it's always great to see family and friends. Also, the weather was nice, especially after being in Florida's 90-degree heat. I guess once a Buckeye, always a Buckeye.:)

There's a little good-news, bad-news:

The bad news is that we got back to Miami just in time to prepare for the hurricane. That's not any fun and, quite honestly, we're getting a little old to deal with this situation. Being in Miami makes it difficult to "get out of Dodge". It takes 6 hours to drive out of Florida and getting gas along the way is questionable (especially when it's uncertain where Dorian will make landfall). Almost all the flights out of South Florida are sold out, so that's also a problem. Oh well, we'll just hunker down and hope for the best. We are well-prepared, but who knows what the storm will bring.

Now the good news! I got back and online in time to wish Bevo and Monclova Steve a Happy Birthday:

ROCK ON!

OWK, I can't say that I have EVER received a birthday "card" to equal that one for me and Bevo. As I am wont to say (notice that old English Lit. class stuff, there? lol!), you are THE MAN, baby!
We will all be thinking of you and wishing the best for you during the hurricane. Stay safe, our friend. You're priceless!

Yes! Thank you from the two members of the class of "69!! (That's dirty, right?)

Wife preoccupied with school and an ill mom. Bought my daughter dinner last night and a meal to take to her job. Earlier this week bought my son windshield wipers, an oil cap for his engine (I thought I put it on), and breakfast Wednesday morning.

Under the "glass is half full" philosophy I look at all these purchases as my birthday gifts since my kids didn't cost me as much as they usually do. Plus, I enjoy hearing their latest issues. Sometimes I am even allowed to comment on them.

One other birthday card came from a lady I taught school with ten years ago. We were buds for 15 years and she sends a card every year and we exchange Christmas cards. Always a good friend!

OWK - good luck with the storm. Rest easy - our president says you are well protected!!!

OWK - Van Lue has fallen to second place as the smallest school in Ohio to play football. The Wildcats have 31 out. but I note that some Academy in Cincinnatti is sporting a team with a roster of 29.

(Will have to work on some more mini - quizzes and discard my mini-aggressions.)

Bevo......sounds like your birthday goblet was more than half full.

Of course, so sorry about your wife's burdens. Many times we hubbies will find ourselves, well, not in 1st place as far as the wife's attention to others is focused. All I can say is, been there too with Mrs. M., but it gets better with patience (and sometimes, a LOT of patience o_O).

Oh, the kids. The kids -- no matter what the deal is -- the kids are, as we oldsters like us on this forum have come to find out, are a Godsend. I think that maybe we get more satisfaction out of doing stuff for them than the other way around (although sometimes the other way around can feel just FINE, dagnabit!).

You are, thank goodness, in such a wonderful place where you can both love and be loved. Is that Heaven? Pretty damn close, don't ya' think? And of course, if you get a big head over all your friends telling you how great you are, I'll be here to bring you back to earth!

Jim Leavelle, the Dallas detective seen in the iconic photo , in the white Stetson and light colored suit, while escorting Lee Harvey Oswald has died at the age of 99. The straight - on photo shows Jack Ruby, shooting Oswald in the stomach area, Oswald grimacing and a shocked Leavelle looking on.

Throughout the rest of his remarkable life, Leavelle spoke regularly at schools and other functions to quell conspiracy beliefs. For the rest of his life Leavell, received mail almost daily concerning some aspect of the assassination and the murder of Oswald. He was among the lead detectives assigned to investigate the case.

The Dallas Detective Of The Year award is named for him although he stated he thought it should have been named for officer J.D. Tippit , who was killed on the street trying to speak to Oswald just after the assassination.

The photo won a Pulitzer Prize for Robert H. Jackson.

Leavell was also front and center on another auspicious day as he was one of the sailors stationed at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked and he was one of the first sailors to see the approaching planes.

Hello all, I'm at an airport in St.Louis waiting for our connecting flight to take us home. I see that Ohio is having a huge storm right now with one coming later tonight, too. We'll land at 7:20 and drive one and a half hours to my favorite small town.

I love storms and wish I were home to see it.

Happy belated birthday to Monclova Steve and Bevo. Our daughter Andra's birthday was the 30th, and we were with her.

Yes, one of my favorites from back in the day when the circus came to Upper. :)

Looks like Dorian won't nail Miami head-on as many of us feared for our beloved OWK.
Still, here is where some thoughts and prayers certainly couldn't possibly hurt.

Thanks Monclova Steve and I hope that Diva had a safe flight from St. Louis. As for Dorian, well, things are looking a little better for Florida (although most of the state is still not out of the woods). Miami is relatively safe since we are not in the hurricane's path nor "in the cone".

Dorian has now become the strongest hurricane to hit this part of the Atlantic. Earlier today, Dorian was clocked at 185 mph. As you can see from the info below, it currently is at 178 mph with gusts up to 219 mph. These numbers probably don't mean much until you consider that a CAT 5 hurricane starts at 157+mph. Needless to say, this is a very strong storm and if it doesn't stay "out to sea", there could be unbelievable losses.

Let's hope Dorian stays out in the Atlantic and doesn't make landfall on the east coast. Prayers to those who might be in Dorian's path.

Wonderful to hear from you, OWK.
Yes, the perfect destination for Dorian is a fun time spending all of its fury out in the Atlantic Ocean and away from the coastline.
We can happily live without more video/photos of this storm's destruction.

Good to hear, One Who Knows. We visited friends and family in FL and SC six weeks ago. We're concerned for the ones in Columbia SC as the ones most likely affected at this point, although they are roughly 100 miles inland.

* * * * *

On a more upbeat note, I made a pilgrimage driving through some of those school/city/village names you see on here once in a while, including Vanlue, Upper Sandusky - and yes, even Monclova.

Lol. Mrs. Zunardo and I celebrated our 30th anniversary yesterday by spending a couple of days in Frankenmuth MI. A co-worker hipped me to this place about five years ago, and I'm glad they did. We're thinking of going back in late October to see the fall colors, and maybe a visit in December to see the Yule decorations.

We stayed at the Bavarian Lodge, unique in that all the rooms are each given the name of a different local German family who emigrated there 150 years ago.

The hotel family-style restaurant was like a Der Dutchmans on steroids, with sports bar appetizers, beer and very potent cocktails to go along with the amazing traditional fried chicken and mashed potatoes.

On our way out yesterday we stopped at Bronner's Christmas Wonderland. Jaw-dropping place. Did some early Christmas shopping for family members.ornament theme you can think of). I picked up a Christmas train designed to set up around the base of the tree, and I'm really looking forward to this December.

By the way, if you visit Frankenmuth and are on a low-cholesterol diet, do NOT stop at Tony's diner. A regular order of bacon comes to you on a separate large plate, in a pile four inches high. The menu also offered "12-egg omelets". I was too scared to order one.

Also hoping Dorian states "at sea"...Mostly because I have friends in Florida but also because we will be flying to Florida next Monday.

I went to Panama City Beach a year after the hurricane last year and it was still a big mess. Trees sideways and bent over, buildings still boarded up. It takes a long time to recover.

Great point, Diva. Once the cameras and our attention moves on, the people there are suffering badly and we begin to forget about them. That's on us, not them; and -- as much as I hate to admit it -- I'm as guilty as anyone.

Right now, I've been choked up by the video coming out from the Bahamas. Just incredible devastation.

Thanks for all the thoughts, prayers and posts. Yes, Dorian is a monster and, thankfully, it is staying offshore (so far). Obviously, there is still danger ahead due to the winds in northern Florida and the threat of landfall in Georgia and the Carolinas.

It's almost too hard to believe that it has been almost a week that this storm has been carefully tracked. In fact, on ABC affiliate Channel 10 in Miami, they have had 24/7 coverage since last Wednesday. Yes, that means the network TV shows have been pre-empted for an entire week (everything except the national news at 6:30 pm and the Oklahoma-Houston football game). This storm has moved so slowly that it has worn out a good portion of Florida's population (at least on the east coast). I'm very thankful that those of us in South Florida have been spared. Trust me, as a transplanted Buckeye, give me an old-fashioned snowstorm any day.

Please keep those affected by Dorian in your prayers.

A good day for college football on TV. Bucks up at halftime over Cincinnati, 28-0. #7 Michigan losing to Army 14-7 at halftime. This could be a huge upset. Akron Zips also on the tube vs. UAB (Zips losing 17-6). At 3:30, a good one as #12 Texas A&M vs. #1 Clemson. Then tonight, a great one at Texas as the #9 Longhorns take on #6 LSU (led by former LSU QB, Joey Burrow).

Finally and good riddance! Raiders release Antonio Brown:

ROCK ON!
