11-time state champion Marion Local vs 8-time state champion Newark Catholic. I assume the combined 19 titles is a record for a state championship matchup.

Marion Local will be attempting to be first or second 16-0 team in OHSAA history.
 
 
Marion Local has made the playoffs every year since 2005. During that stretch they are 70-7 in the playoffs. Of those 7 losses, only 1 was to a non-MAC, non-Kirtland school -- Aaron Craft's Liberty-Benton team. They have 9 state titles and 7 losses in the past 17 postseasons.

I honestly don't have a f'n clue how a small school district generates that type of consistent success. It's unbelievable.

I think the only way it wouldn't be is if St. Ignatius & Cincinnati Moeller were playing in the D1 final.

In addition to those 19 titles, soon to be 20, MSML & Newark Catholic have combined for 172 playoff victories and 213 playoff games played. That's a winning percentage of .807 combined. Amazing. Also, if MSML wins it would be their 90th playoff win and 12th title.

Good luck to Marion Local! 3 MAC teams playing for state. Heck Carey playing Coldwater shows that WC/NW OH is getting it done in Division V, VI, & VII. Love when our stateline area brings hardware home on both sides regardless if it's runner up or championship variety.

Recruiting and getting kids from all these towns helps:

Maria Stein.
Cassella.
St Rose.
Osgood.
Chickasaw.
And all those country club folks who are Elks members and families migrating to the area for the
Shrine of Holy Relics and it's easy to see how they can have continued success.

Add in the families to move there to be by family who have retired at the St Charles Seminary and, well, no one else has a chance
 
ML 41 NC 6

ML's front 7 on defense is very good. With Buschur and Seitz back, 5 of the frt. 7 defensive players are former or current 1st team All - MAC. For NC to win they are going to have to chuck the football.

Congrats to the Flyers on getting to the big one! As Goodwin said, they aren't the biggest or most explosive team he's ever had but they don't have any glaring weakness and are extremely gritty. Otte runs the ball extremely well probably better than any Marion player in modern memory since Jacy Goettemoeler, and reads his lineman really well. The o line isn't big but it gets a push every play. The defense is small but are quick as a hiccup. Hopewell Loudon learned that size doesn't mean a whole lot if you can't get leverage due to being too slow. Go Flyers, seniors go get that state record after it has eluded a few classes before you!

Let’s not shortchange this school’s athletic prowess. In addition to their football championships the Flyers have also garnered 3 boys basketball titles, 1 girls title and 5 volleyball crowns. Not bad, huh?

A lot of the credit should go to Coach Goodwin's predecessor, Coach Mike Cramer. He tore the program down to the studs and built it back up the right way. That foundation of success was then taken to another level by Goodwin.

The biggest reason - perhaps by far - for ML's success in the past 23 seasons is hc Tim Goodwin.

Was the 2012 D-VI state final the last time these two met?

Yes it was. The first meeting was in 2003’s state semi-final, which the Flyers won 21-14. In 2012 the Flyers denied a last-second pass to hold on for a 28-21 win which gave them their 6th state title.

I remember the 2012 title game well.

NC's Zach Bourne (sp?) had several phenomenal catches on offense and some big hits on defense - great player.

Yeah. 2016 Newark Catholic lost in the state semi to Cuyahoga heights 30-14. CH lost to ML 21-17 Last year ML lost in the regional finals and Newark Catholic lost in the state semis
 
As a LCL fan, the league has to be proud of how far the teams went into the playoffs. I wish NC the best of luck.
