Great matchup between Ironton and West Jefferson. Calpreps.com has it Ironton 31-28 and Drew Pasteur's site has it Ironton by 3 and a 57% favorite. Heading into wk 14 I think most anyone would take those odds.
Ironton's football history is as rich as any school in Ohio. Over 600 all time victories, 35 playoff appearances with 48-32 record in those games, 11 State Semifinal Four appearances, 6 State Runner-ups and 2 State Titles (89 & 79). They also have or use to have the all time winningest coach in Ohio, Bob Lutz and their games vs Cincinnati Academy of Physical Education (C.A.P.E) in the late 80's were some of Ohio's best. Ironton is led by junior LB/RB Reid Carrico, 6'3' & 225 lbs who is a 2021 OSU commit. What an opportunity for WJ to 1) play vs such a storied program and 2) play vs a guy who will be playing on Saturday's at the Shoe and perhaps on Sunday's in the NFL. 3) Most importantly, a chance to play for a spot in the State Title Game! In the past, WJ has faced a few players who have gone to OSU or the NFL:
* In the 90's I believe London had a DT named Tyree play for OSU
* In the late 80's/early 90's Madison Plains had a LB/RB Brian Stoughton play for OSU
* 1988 Cincinnati North Ben Tayor DT Dana Stubblefield (WJ 24-14). Played at Kansas, was a 1st rd draft pick and NFL Defensive player of the year for the 49'ers in 1997.
* 1982-84 Dublin Coffman rb Vince Workman (WJ was 2-1 in those games). OSU rb and played 6+ years in the NFL
* 1968-70 Teays Valley rb Champ Henson (WJ was 3-0 in those games). Led NCAA in touchdowns scored as a sophomore
* Late 50's London rb Dick LaBeau (WJ probably did not win any of these games). NFL HOF player & coach
I'm sure I missed a few players. I'm also very sure that Ironton has several very good football players besides Carrico. Good luck to WJ!
