Diversity in Massillon Washington Sports

It's time for the athletic director to establish a diversified athletic program in conjunction with the city recreation department to develop quality feeder programs through the city. Starting out with associated tutoring programs for all students the city can attract commerce and new people to the community with not only quality schools athletically but academically.

There are many retired citizens that would volunteer for a program not just to enhance the football program but to help the city grow because of first rate schools. Many graduates of the high school could use city and school facilities for academic programs while former coaches could connect with sports programs to start kids in quality organizations to develop athletically. We have had a lull in all sports with leadership at the top levels which has resulted in a decline in the quality of performance based on the talent available as a result of inadequate development. Proper leadership from the schools and city should make a major difference in where we're at and in future development.

A few examples is the decline in the quality of the basketball program as a result of some questionable coaching choices and the resulting loss of good coaches and players as a result of those choices.

Baseball had a history of outstanding players from minority groups leading up to a minority head coach. The lack of ability to promote interest though local clubs and organizations has lead to a decline in participation that reasonably could lead to a return to the state tournament based on past performance.

One of Coach Shepas's goals as the new coach' at Massillon is to be an active presence at all playing levels. From the program at the Boys Club to the middle schools, he hopes to build a bridge between the youth who participate in these programs to those who are on the varsity field on Friday nights. He believes that the skills and knowledge which these young athletes develop early are crucial components to the success of the varsity program. Coordinated work with these programs will ensure their future success. "Those who stay will be champions" says Coach Shepas.

Diversity just for the sake of diversity is bad. If a woman of any color, or a man of color, is qualified and has the proper qualifications then yes, bring them on. But if not, bringing them in is a sham.
