Concerts. 2021 and beyond.

The big news in concerts this past week has been the opening of the MSG venue in Las Vegas, the Sphere. I saw this thing going up for what seems like years in LV and it has looked so cool and the concept is great if it sounds as good as advertised. So far everything I have been reading has been positive, especially the surrounding visuals. That is great but one worry is bands will just go to LV and expect us to travel and see this show and pay big $s for the right. Below is a video to give you an idea on what it feels like:

I‘d say tickets starting at $1500 for U2 is a pretty gouge-ey start lol.

Before the 1st concert you could get midweek December tickets for $400 + fees, after the reviews for the 1st show were very positive the box office raised them to the $1K range. The artists and venues are all complicit in gouging these days, The Cure proved that with their stand on pricing this past summer.

All the big names will be heading in the destination type itinerary too. The days of a concert T-Shirt listing dozens of cities will look more like this:

New York June 1-21
Chicago July 1-15
Las Vegas: July 15-31
Los Angels: August 10-30

Saw The Violent Femmes at the CLE Masonic Temple and it was a solid concert. This was the 2nd time seeing them and again this was a fun danceable show that just comes at you with high energy punk like tunes through an acoustic lens. Star of the show was the bass player, great sound from an acoustic bass, lead singer also had a great voice for someone that is into their ‘60s. For this show they decided to play their debut album in its entirety which for most in the audience was a key album in their youth. I am usually not a fan of this type of concert but it was such a seminal album it worked. Balance of the show was good but some of the key tunes were played early in the set as part of the album run through so the energy was a step down at times. Nonetheless it was 90 minutes of balls out music. If you have a chance these guys.

As for the venue I am sill not sure I like this place. On the plus parking is plentiful and free and the size is just right but there is literally nothing to do around the place. The set up is just a big swooping auditorium with no balcony, since it was originally made for the Free Mason meetings it is made up of primarily stone and plaster, it gets loud and the sound bounces around all these hard surfaces. It did also take a tune for the sound guy to dial things in, too bad it was their most famous song Blister in the Sun.

I wonder what Taylor Swift’s list looks like.

From the let's enjoy the music thread... Going to see country virtuosos The Wood Box Heroes at GAR Hall this Saturday. Reigning CMA musician of the year, Jenee Fleenor, fronts this band with crack musicians from a variety of bands along for the ride. Should be a good evening of well played tunes.

About to pull the trigger on a warm weather destination rock fest coming up......

Recently have seen:

Quiet Riot on Versailles. Only Sarzo left from the MH days but it was fun. While getting ramped up to go from setlist I had forgotten about some of those songs I loved back when I was bangin.

Stephen Pearcy/RATT in Versailles.
Again, a blast. RATT, Dokken and QR were my first three tape purchases from my mowing jobs as a kid. Looking to see Dolken in a few weeks.
Of course, pearcy isn't gonna sound like what we all remember but it was still a blast.

Alice Cooper at Hobart.
Freaking awesome. I ordered tix after I saw him in Columbus with Leppard and Crue.
He is such a showman. LOVE the inject he puts into Schools Out that works perfectly.
Of course, every good concert should have a beheading!
Alice is such a showman and sounded great.

Dokken in a few weeks i.hope with Bullet Boys. I know...Don's voice is reached but I gotta go see them. Wasn't allowed to go see.them with my neighbor when I was like in junior high so I'm going now!

Saw Dokken in July when Don opened the tour here in Cincy. Yes, his voice is not mid 1980s, but still a good show, especially if you’re a fan. Great stories from Don and interactions with the crowd!

Don did not play anything from the new record, which was released in full this past Friday. Perhaps they play some new songs for the show you’re heading to next month. Let us know.

Expecting the worst so I'll be pleasantly surprised...I hope. Heard the interview with Lynch last week (announced 24 is the Lynch Mobs last year) and doesn't seem like he ll be at the show I'm heading to which is unfortunate.

Yeah Lynch has made appearances at some of the previous shows.
Lynch Mob coming to Wilmington’s Murphy Theater next summer. I’ll be there for that one.

May have to check it out. Officially Jan of 2025 is their last show on the monsters if Rock cruise but 24 is their last tour....if we can believe it

Wasn't it Van Halen that stipulated a big bowl of M&M's with all the brown ones removed?
Supposedly they included that in their contract just to see if anybody was actually reading all the details.
It was VH.

From that JGB list my fave is a carton of Camel no filter ciggs, I am sure all venues nowadays don't even allow smoking in them let alone providing these to the band.

Saw the Wood Box Heroes at the GAR Hall on Saturday and this could possibly be my favorite show of the year. As described above these are all top notch sidemen/woman in the business plus an active Nashville songwriter that put this project together. As expected the playing was 2nd to none but the vocals were also as good as it gets with the two primary singers able to not only carry their lead tunes but also harmonize to give a great overall sound. They played 2.5 hours of music over two sets with a good combo of their released songs, new songs they are working on, and unique covers/traditionals. Their own songs were fantastic too, you could tell there are pros writing these things. At the set break a couple band members came out and chatted up the crowd; one wanted from the bar a good local beer, (ended up with Great Lakes Porter) and Jenee Fleenor did selfies with some fan girls and ended up getting in line with the ladies to use the public bathroom because it was convenient.

Talking to the promoter afterwards this band is a really a hot name in the business and could gain some traction once they release a full album of their own tunes, in November they are getting a 2nd slot at the Opry in 3 months. The problem is they don't have the look/charisma that Nashville wants these days and that they are supporters for that reason. Folks in Nashville always knew Jenee Fleenor was a great fiddle player and could sing well but she looks and acts like your next door neighbor; so do they take the gamble and try and build something on their own or do they go back to playing with the bigger names and make a comfortable living? If it was me I would go for it as these folks had a great musical conversation among themselves and connected with audience, good musicians are always in demand and they can go back to that if needed. If they go out on the road next year go see this band.

Don't know if you listen to Eddie Trunks show on SXM, but he had an hour straight interview with Don. It was equal parts sad, interesting, informative and entertaining.

Their futive video has over 600k views.now...sounds good and I may buy my first new album in......decades maybe.

I did not catch that one. I’ve always liked Trunk; his views on the Rock and Roll hall of Fame are spot on.

I know Don has been doing several interviews throughout the summer/fall leading up to this new album. He is very candid about his career.

Mat Kearney The Acoustic Trio Tour at Memorial Hall Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati.

Have always enjoyed seeing Mat since he first hit the scene in 2007. This time around I was able to catch his acoustic show, which includes story telling in a more intimate setting. I wish more artists could/would do acoustic shows. Great show as always by Mat.

Just popped up for free tickets to Metallica for Friday or Sunday in Detroit.
Friday is out due to football.
Debating Sunday but Im likely seeing Dokken Saturday but quite honestly with how Metallica is doing this tour I think I will decline. For those who dont know, they are playing Fri/Sun in the same cities, but two completely different sets with no repeated songs so that means no matter which night you go to you will miss a number of their hits.

Think that makes the decision easy.

Dokken with Bulletboys in ft wayne last night.

Bulletboys: Torrent, man he still sound he did back in the day, and a great stage presence. Ultimately though, not a strong enough catalog but man he brings it like he did in the 80s.

Venue: Pierre's. Been 25 plus yrs. Good sound. Smallish and it was packed. A negative is the other bars attached, Dokken was getting pissssed you could hear the base from next door. Rightfully so...it was annoying and distracting.

Natives were getting restless as it was an hour before sets and some were yelling. Seems like there was a sound issue, something maybe was messed up after the BB set and they were tearing down the house kit and ya could see the sound folks running around like crazy.

Don Dokken: arm partially paralyzed from a surgery and he moves slow, very slow.

He sounds quite different, much lower tone but not as bad as I expected. It was within my limits of still being entertaining. I think he sounded better than Stephen Pearcy I saw recently.

If ya were expecting the 80s Dokken ya would be disappointed. I'm glad I went. The band sounded spot on and to just hear the tunes I first fell in love with was worth it. Quiet Riot was my first tape I bought, but Dokken was the first group i dove all in.

Don sounded just good enough and if he comes around again I'd go back.

I was left a little disappointed tho. I know they always stay stuff on stage that's BS, but he said a few times this was the last US date on the tour (it's not) and because of thatnthey would have an expanded show. Noticed them putting a setlist on the floor at each mic stand so I thought maybe they would go longer.

Now...Don likes to talk and I enjoyed most of it. He did get long in the tooth (get it..) at times but it was interesting so they were in for 80 minutes.

Instead of extending their setlist, they did not play 4 songs that are on many of the past ones online and did not add any. He also said they never play unchained the night...but past setlists say they always do.

No Kiss of Death. No Paris is burning. No tooth and nail. No When Heaven Comes Down.

Was very disappointed with that.

Now...he may have just forgot....in trunks show Eddie told him a few things that he should known..like their new album was already released...etc.

But anyways...it was a band I've been waiting to see since the 80s and I enjoyed it.

Now...to the next one.....almost ready to pull the trigger on it....

The show in July at Riverfront Live had similar issues. Originally an outdoor show, switched to an indoor show. Then, the facility did not open until 830p because Don claimed their equipment was late arriving. As a result, Dokken hit the stage at 945p. Gave is the same BS about playing extra songs—didn’t happen.

He did play Unchain the Night, so you were correct on that one. Played about 80 min like your show.

Overall, agree/enjoyed and glad I went to see him. I’m not sure how much longer he can tour.

States they are going overseas but who knows. Imagine for most they had no idea but I sure did they were full of it.

They have no explanation of why it was late
..but all their stuff was on stage already sans the guitars for the first two bands.

I had slim hopes it was so Lynch could arrive on time but by lynch interview few weeks ago he states he doesn't dk it much and only of he is in the area...

So I have a story about a band starting up a show late. My 1st P-Funk concert was in the mid '90s and it was advertised as the 1st time Bootsy & Bernie Worrell were touring with George Clinton's current version of the band and they were bringing along the original Mothership prop. Show was to start at 7:00 as he plays a long time and the venue had a curfew, our crew shows up just before 7 and there is a mob scene outside of the doors with people banging on them to open them up. Come to find out they played in Detroit the night before and had a deep into the morning party since this was their old stomping grounds, didn't get into CLE until early evening. So the security has no interest in dealing with an unruly mob that is not their fault and opens the doors 7:30ish and the roadies are still setting things up and sound checking while the sold out place is filling up quickly. Crowd is chanting and yelling stuff so some of the key musicians start to come out and jam a little while they are finishing up the stage and roll into the 1st tune with roadies still up the stage. Ended up playing past curfew and was one of the best shows I had ever seen.

Well, in the case this past July, most of the attendees were AARP eligible, haha. No chanting or banging. Probably most wanted to get home before midnight haha.

When did Don have that surgery? He was at the rose back in 2018 I think it was. I didn't notice any issues back then. Thought he sounded good.

Saw Depeche Mode at Rocket Mortgage on Friday night.

Opening act was DIIV, a band I'd never heard of. They were ok, some interesting music but their microphones were terrible. You really couldn't understand anything they spoke, let alone sing.

DM came on about 8:40 and while Dave Gahan and Martin Gore are in their 60's, they sounded amazing. Gahan didn't stop moving the entire show. They played 23 songs spanning their career with 4 songs from their latest album, which is actually good but people wanted to hear the old stuff. The stage and lighting was excellent, they engaged the crowd quite a bit and seemed to genuinely enjoy being there.

Played several different versions of some of their old songs which was great. It has been amazing to see this band in the 80's as a synth band and how they've evolved. Overall just a great show and they clearly still have gas in the tank.

Late 2019. Spinal surgery. Told him they could go in from the front but could hurt his vocal chords so he chose through rhe back...and ot didn't go well. Apparently he is suing the Dr. He has some use of it now but cannot play guitar.
