Why does no one ever bring silly accusations and statements up when it involves certain people...

Wendell Carter Jr., the Duke one and done basketball player's mother, Kylia compared college sports to slavery and prison in it's exploitation of labor.

Read that again and let that soak in for a minute.

High school student athletes voluntarily go to colleges and universities - sign up to go to school and some are fortunate to get an athletic scholarship and other benefits to go to a school. It costs them ABSOLUTELY NOTHING...

This is slavery????

This is prison???

Good Morning America, the liberal morning show with Robin Roberts, George Stephanopolis and Michael Strahan should have led off the show today shouting down this woman and any comparisons to slavery with any scholarship D1 college athlete. Donald Trump, who's done more for minorities than any other recent president with all the companies he's owned and operated, makes any kind of comment regarding the slightest bit of accountability for people and he's a racist?
How in the world could that panel had not laughed in her face. Her son, I'm sure has worked hard to make himself a great basketball player, but he's not worked a day in his life, and will never have to. And she's comparing his life to a slave??? Really?

Clay Travis on Fox Sports Radio covers this stuff all the time. It's the primary reason he's had such success in growing his fanbase over the past year or so.
 
I see where she was going with that, specifically with all the money being thrown around in football and basketball, but the two aren't really comparable. I know professional athletes get paid (most quite well) so again not comparable, but isn't it interesting (for lack of a better word) that most professional athletes in football and basketball specifically, are African American, while most owners are rich white dudes. So like I said, I see the point she's trying to make, while also acknowledging it's a poor comparison. But here we are talking about it, plus it was all over the Internet yesterday. She did exactly what she intended to do, get people talking about it.
 
She was obviously using hyperbole to draw people’s attention to the inequity of the student athlete and the windfall made off their labor. Obviously it’s a debatable issue. Figures 14red nearly stroked out over it.
 
It's funny that the same people that always get triggered and make a big stink about stuff like this(14Red specifically) are giving these people exactly what they want, and ensure that it will continue to be talked about into the future. I always go back to this, but I truly believe if people would have just ignored the whole NFL kneeling thing, it would have been over and done with in no time. Instead it got dragged out for an entire year.

Exactly. Most of us see on TV or read about what she said, raise our eyebrows and think "What a ridiculous statement" and move on. He and many on here try so hard to make this out that only they are the only ones holding up the virtuous norms of society.
 
That's exactly what they believe. That they are the epitome of the American citizen, and if anyone does anything they don't like, well, look out. Because they'll let you know.

No. I don't. I'm sure I just dismissed it as something that was a strange statement rather than something that said what we were as a society. It was something said by an individual and I took it for what it was worth -- not very much.

Point I was making is that Carter's mother wasn't the first to bring up this topic and she certainly won't be the last
 
Kind of a really dumb statement by this woman.

What is interesting is that college sports is a good example of socialism. Everyone gets the same pay regardless of their ability to produce. The end of the bench non-revenue scholarship athlete is getting the same pay for the same work as the star athlete that is playing in front of 100,000 fans.

If anyone could make an argument for slavery, it would be the non-scholarship athletes that are paying their way through school and still have to do that same amount of work for their respective sport. Of course, these are all choices they make. Not even close to slavery.

I always laugh at stuff like this. Playing professional sports is work. Just because it's a good job, and one you're envious of, doesn't mean it's not work. In fact, it's higher-pressure and more cutthroat than 99.9% of jobs.

Sorry ronnie, you're not paying attention. The groundswell of support for college athletes getting paid get more and more attention. Not because it makes sense, but because no one explains how college athletic departments work. Of course fanning the flames of this was the report last week were it listed the crazy amounts of money that some D1 coaches get, even in non-revenue sports of mid majors.
But honestly, if there was a journalist out there who really wants to squash some of this, just report not only what colleges get from the huge TV deals, but list the expenses of said programs and show that most operate in a deficit. Yes, Ohio State, Alabama, Texas, USC make money, but only a small percentage do, and they may a TON of money. But mostly, the bottom 60-70% of D1 programs break even or lose money.
You want the next "kneeling" thing? The NFL may consider not doing the national anthem before games. You have another issue of numbers of players kneeling during the anthem and the firestorm that goes with it, and I bet you won't see the anthem be played.

Bingo Yappi!! You just nailed it. Wendell Carter Jr. isn't forced to take a scholarship at Duke and all the perks that go with it. Poor kid.... SMH.
 
Amen guys, Mr. Carter knew exactly what he signed up for and he did it because it was the easiest path to being a 1st round draft pick and signing a 15 million dollar contract or more. He had the choice of going to Europe for a year and playing there or going right to G league for a year. No gun to his head at all.

Yep. That's what ALL of us have been saying on here -- that his mom's comments about it being like slavery were ridiculous. No one agrees with her, but for some reason 14Red wants to keep this non-debate alive -- thus giving way too much attention to an absolutely ridiculous statement that practically no one agrees with.

The only gripe that these kids have is with the NBA. No college can require them to attend. These complaints are the musings of dimwits and morons.
 
I can pretty much care less for the pro sports of Football and Basketball and starting to lose interest in college for those sports as well.
 
Dumb. I love Duke bball, but she is dumb for making that comparison. I will say, it’s time to end the one and done rule.
 
My understanding is she played basketball at Mississippi State and fully understands the way college sports works. My guess is she's getting something from an organization proposing college athletes get paid.
Look, semi-intelligent people know how this works, they just see big time coaches making big time dollars and want a cut. Everyone knows the mid range D1's and mid majors struggle financially in their athletic departments.
