Cleveland Cavaliers and Fox Sports play-by-play announcer Fred McLeod died Monday evening, the team announced.

McLeod, 67, was about to begin his 14th consecutive season (15th season overall) as the team’s television play-by-play announcer. He served in that role starting with the 2006 season. He also served in the same capacity with the Cavs during the 1979-80 season.

The team’s announcement said McLeod died suddenly Monday evening.

He had walked 9 holes at Red Tail golf club in Avon, and as he drove toward home (lives in Bay Village) late Monday afternoon/evening he only made it a couple miles to Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Avon where he pulled in in distress. Some older Church ladies there for a meeting heard him and came to help (and prayed). They called 911, which was good because he had called but was too distressed to clearly say where he was. They did not know who he was until the news hit Tuesday morning. Very sad. Very nice man by all accounts.
Very sad. The video of him breaking down after Cavs won title was great.
