CHL 2024/2025 preview/season thread

I think for some they don't feel like they're being pushed in their current situations. No one wants to be a star on a terrible team. Some are flat out delusional and think they're better than what they really are. Some just leave because the school isn't a good fit for them anymore. As Fun2Bme pointed out, some are looking for a leg up, which is needed these days because colleges aren't really recruiting high school kids like that unless they are studs, so you have to try and find a way to stand out and be seen if college sports are your goal.
I get why kids are transferring, I just don't like it and don't want to see what is happening in college at the high school level.

You have DII kids being poached by Mountain/MAC/Sunbelt/Horizon level programs. You have Mountain/MAC/Sunbelt/Horizon programs being poached by SEC/Big12/ACC/Big East programs. And SEC/Big12/ACC/Big East poaching themselves. NIL has taken it to the next level and "programs" don't exist anymore- now we just have "teams" that change dramatically from year to year.

I'd hate for leagues like the CHL to be raided every year by the GMC/GCL.

The message from Elder/X/Moeller coaches/parents is that the level of athletics is so bad at the smaller schools that you have to be at the larger schools to get noticed.

I can't speak for others, but Elder RARELY gets transfers.

Of course, they are going to sell their school to potential 8th graders and will certainly talk about competing at the highest level in one of the best leagues in the state, but they are not disparaging small schools.

That’s not accurate at all. Speaking of X (not sure about others) sports are a footnote in what they talk about when kids visit/shadow.

GCL will never poach a school to join their league

Having kids that went to GCL and non GCL schools and they played sports at those schools, I have some insight. I won't say these schools do not recruit, but I personally have not witnessed it. My kids played and were key players in multiple sports, personally they were not recruited by the school, nor were any of the families on the teams that I spoke with. I am talking about star players who were big time kids coming into high school. I will say there is 100% recruiting going on at GCL, as well as every other school out there but that recruiting is being done by the best recruiters you can find, the current players and families! If you want a kid to attend your school, no one is going to do a better job getting them there than another player or parents who just talk it up. I know it's easy to say the schools recruit, but who is doing that recruiting for the schools? It's not the Principals, or the Atheletic Directors, they do not have the time to do this. The coaches of those sports usually have a pulse in the community for their sport but they are really not out there. My kids played in the GCYL football league from 1st-8th grade and not one time have I seen a GCYL Coach out there recruiting kids. I can assure you, parents and players are getting other kids to come to their schools. Other than that, you have people looking to go who have absolutely no reason athletically to go to a Moeller or X, they usually live in a bubble and think they are great because they are better than kids on their rec. teams. For what it's worth!

AND YOU DO NOT NEED TO GO TO THOSE SCHOOLS TO GET NOTICED: ex. Evan Prater (Wyoming/UC), Richard Hall (Wyoming/OSU), Andre Barkley (CCD/North Carolina), Cory Kiner (Roger Bacon/LSU), Dustin Cohen (Summit/Miami U/NFL), Erik Swanson (Mariemont/Wabash/MLB), Andrew Benintendi (Madeira/Arkansas/MLB), Alex Sulfsted (Mariemont/Miami U/NFL). This list can continue in these sports as well as others. If you are good, you can be found. It's so much easier now than before due to all of the social media and other ways to put yourself in front of schools. Coaches look for talent!

True Story - When Doug Rosfeld was the HC at Moeller, he helped coach the youth team that his son and mine played on at All Saints. My wife asks me after practice one day - Can schools like Moeller recruit? I of course said no but everyone knows they do and why she would ask. While the moms were sitting around talking one asked Doug's wife where he was. She said he was in Columbus trying to recruit a kid to come to Moeller. I start laughing and told my wife the next time they talked, to tell his to refrain from using the term recruiting. I coached w/ Tom Grippa and he told me how the LaSalle basketball team set their system up to recruit based on Moeller's process. The school who probably recruits the least is Elder simply cause the west side is unusual and ppl never leave. Grandpa went to Elder, Dad went to Elder, Son went to Elder and just bought a house 3 blocks from dad and grandpa and is sending his boy to Elder. I would agree that the best recruiters are the kids and families who attend but 100% the coaches are involved and participate and are a very, very close 2nd to parents/students.

I will agree with your 2nd paragraph and I think being noticed is MUCH easier at a small school now due to the rise in technology. EVERYONE has a Hudl account and a link to their highlight film which can be created in a couple hrs and probably edited 1000x during the fall while they are sitting in class. Back in the 1980's/1990's/2000's you had to go through the process of actually creating a highlight tape on VHS, then mailing that out to schools....or rely on a recruiter/scout to show up at the game you were playing in - Much easier when you were playing for/against Moeller, Princeton, Colerain, St. X or a higher profile, bigger school. Small schools never played in the Herbstreit back when that was a thing. So much of recruiting is also the numbers and measurements. If you're a 6'6 270lbs offensive tackle or a kid who runs a 4.5, someone is going to take a chance - even if you played at Lockland or New Miami or Deer Park. Every year, there are a hundred examples of D1 teams recruiting Tarzan and when he shows up; he plays like Jane and next thing you know, he's on a D3 roster.

Elder doesn’t recruit because their varsity starting lineups are set when the kids are still in 8th grade. Can’t upset the dads club. 😁
