CHL 2024/2025 preview/season thread

If the Taylor coaching staff has any friends at Wyoming they may want to call and ask what the hell happened.
1 long pass completed on what looked to be miscommunication by the Alter secondary. other than that not much offense generated by Wyoming.

Alter has been sound on defense. Taylor I think will be coming up with schemes and trying a lot of trick plays. They are going to need to open the playbook up

Yeah-- that'll happen when your best offensive player is on the sideline with a torn ACL... Nobody could have expected that Wyoming was going anywhere deep in the playoffs without Hancock this year.

Also, obviously, Alter was a several steps above the competition in the CHL-- which does NOT bode well for the games this week... Taylor is next into that wood chipper, and then, if IH finds a way past Taft, they're next... Alter will be able to call themselves CHL Champs...

THAT won't go well...
Good thing for Taylor is they are playing w/house money b/c no one expected them to be playing in wk 13!

Taylor's firing on all cylinders, Dransmans pulling out all the strings. Onside kicks, fake pants, going for it on 4th down ect ect.

Both teams are playing wk13 for a reason they both are pretty good

Agreed. Taylor is going to give Alter everything they have. I think Taylor will play aggressive. If IH can beat Clinton-Massie on their home field then IH can beat anyone in this region. While I think Alter will make it out alive, these games are played for a reason!

The loss of Hancock and any semblance of a running game resulted in a pass heavy offense and an Alter defense that was ready for it. Wyoming never could get anything going offensively, and on defense they got slashed by some big plays. Don't let Alter's record fool you - they're a solid football team that plays outstanding defense.

Well said, Alter also faced many obstacles this year with numerous season ending injuries. 4 year starter at QB, 3 year starter at LB and several other key injuries. Add in a gauntlet of a schedule I believe helped prepare them for the post season.

Fake pants? Is Taylor going "Bottomless?" Are they wearing chaps? That seems like it would make more sense for the (Wyoming) Cowboys...

Alter still Cover 1/Cover 0, playing the bear front? We played them years ago when they won a couple state titles. We were a spread offense and Alter lined up with 7 in the box - covered all 5 OL and kept 2 LB and brought it every play. Long yardage they went Cover 1. We hit a couple deep balls and screens. But other than the 4-5 big plays, our guys were worked over. We couldn't consistently win all 5 battles on the LOS.

Unsure what their base defense is, but against WYO they came out in nickel and other DB heavy packages because they knew WYO was putting 3, 4, 5 receivers out. They didn't bring the house often. They rushed 3 or 4 but sat back largely in man and some zone and did a very effective job at tight coverage. Lots of pass breakups by the Alter DBs. There were not many open receivers for WYO's sophomore QB to throw to, but against a more balanced run/pass offense they may stack the box more than they did against WYO.

Different personnel I suppose. This was back when Chris Borland was on the team and Mangold's massive sister. I made a comment that there's no way they'd be able to play a legitimate spread team like that and our HC said he went to their playoff game with Coldwater the year before. Coldwater was undefeated and averaging close to 40ppg. Pretty much shut them down. Those teams Alter had in the late 2000's had some sick talent. We scored 2 TD's and had over 200yds of offense and I was ecstatic LOL

It's gonna be a really tough test for Taylor. If Alter's identity is tough defense, I'm not sure Taylor's faced a tough defense all year. Maybe Lawrenceburg? But that was week 2. If Alter's DBs are that good, I'm doubling McFarland all night and making anyone else beat you through the air given that he's accounted for 45% of their receiving yards this year. Stack the box from time to time to slow down the run and continue daring someone else to beat you. For how explosive Taylor has been the last few weeks, I think this could be a game where the winning team scores 21 or less.
