CAVS 2022-2023

Phoenix was very shorthanded and looked it, the only thing that kept them in the game was Washington decided to get hot while Mitchell was saving energy playing defense. Then the Cavs brought in a rested Neto who played some aggressive defense and then all of sudden the Cavs go on a huge run to close out the game in the 4th. Interesting game coming up in Utah as Mitchell heads back to SLC for the 1st time since the big trade. Also many will be looking to see if Jordan Clarkson gets some sort of discipline action for his 2nd flagrant 2 in 30 days.

Colin Sexton out tonight.

Lousy finish to the game last night, that Jazz 7 point possession because of Careless LaVert was a killer. Would have been nice to have a defensive stopper available to play Clarkson instead of an offensive minded 2.

Not sure how much he will help as his knee is a complete mess but as the column says he is a popular teammate so morally speaking this is great news.

It might be a little spark off the bench, but I agree, I wouldn't expect too much. It's good to see him back, though.

He was really good in getting the second team going last year and did a nice job of bringing love back into the offensive mix. Hopefully, his knee is good enough to allow him to resume that role.

Making his season debut and playing for the first time since tearing his left ACL on Dec. 28, 2021, veteran guard Ricky Rubio had quite an impact. He finished with nine points, three rebounds and one assist in 10 minutes. With him on the floor, the Cavs outscored Portland by six points.
“He’s calming. He’s steadying. He makes everybody better. He’s got courage,” Bickerstaff said when asked about Rubio’s return. “He made those two big shots to help us continue a run and bring us back in the game. You just see how he helps everybody and how he organizes and puts guys in the right place and simplifies the game for everyone.”

Strong comeback win on the road,so good to see Ricky run just hope he‘ll make to the playoffs he’ll be needed.

Got more from Rubio than I thought he could give, as raymo says just need him to stay healthy until the playoffs.

On the other side of the vet equation is Kevin Love. Dude is in a major shooting slump and not adding much to the team. If anyone is need of a slump buster it is Love:

Utah won tonight.collin sexton returned. His plus minus was + 17.We miss you collin.
Context is important brian. His + 17 tonight brings his +/- for the year to…..29. Meanwhile Mitchell’s +/- for the year is 143.

But you want to talked advanced stats? Let’s talk advanced stats. Sexton’s 16.2 PER so far this year would be 0.5 lower than Mitchell’s worst year in the league. Mitchell’s PER so far is 24.2. Collin also has a lower true shooting percentage, rebound percentage, assist percentage, steal percentage, block percentage, offensive win shares, defensive win shares, total win shares, offensive box +/-, defensive box +/-, total box +/-. And it’s all lower by a significant amount. In fact, just about the only advanced stat that Sexton has higher numbers than Mitchell are free throw rate and…..turnover percentage. And if you want to compare Garland and Sexton, Garland is statistically better than Sexton in most advanced stats. There isn’t an argument to be made for Sexton over either of the Cavs guards.

Why do you miss a significantly inferior player?

No Towns, no Gobert in the 2nd half, Wolves playing the 2nd night of a back to back...and hammer the Cavs.

Pathetic effort.

Don't forget to add lauri stats.Collin shooting percentage 5.3 percent better than darius.
No, I’m going to ignore Lauri just like you have.

We’re talking about advanced stats, brian. And if that’s the only thing you can point out that Collin is better than Darius, you don’t have an argument. Not to mention, Collin should be slightly better than Darius, he’s a year further along in his development. The fact he isn’t better in every area says a lot about Collin.

Is anyone else amused by how brian repeatedly criticizes the Mitchell trade yet was wildly enthusiastic about the similar Watsondermytowel trade? While only time will tell given the future aspects of the trade, at least Mitchell has produced at this point (unlike Watson).

In reality, the trade may work for both teams. Utah is building for the future and the trade works for that purpose. The Cavs needed a star to add to the mix now (and Sexton would not work for that purpose- the first twelve seconds of the video below show why). Utah would trade Sexton in a heartbeat for a 1st round pick, as they would any other BACKUP.

Garland vs. Sexton isn't even close. There's not a single GM in the NBA that would make that trade.

As for Markanen, brian never even mentioned him until I mentioned he was the most valuable asset to Utah in the trade.

Lauri has turned out to be by far the most valuable asset in that deal for Utah. He's getting usage volume on a rebuilding team that he couldn't have gotten with the Cavs, and he's proving that there was another level to be reached in his game.

Utah is close to .500 BECAUSE OF HIM. Let that sink in.

Lauri was the most important player going to Utah when the trade was made. The basketball world has plenty of small ball dominant scorers. 7 foot mobile scorers and rebounders, not so much. Too bad it wasn't Cedi in that trade instead.

As for Sexton's FG% this year, he's shooting 3% better than his career percentage. It will come down (if he's not gimpy and actually plays).

Nice win today with a decisive 4th quarter. Hopefully, Mitchell is okay. Nice job by Garland of carrying the load when Mitchell went down.

Sexton is a decent NBA scorer … but he is not elite … Mitchell is … Garland is close … the guy in that trade for Utah was LM … and draft picks … Sexton was a throw in … mostly pointless to argue this point

Mitchell's officially out for tonight. Hopefully just a rest thing, although he left early in the last game with an apparent groin injury, so that's a little concerning. Groin injuries can linger.
