Blackledge Assistant to Montgomery

NCproud

I'm in Timeout
Just read in today's Rep that Todd Blackledge will help Montgomery with Basketball and post players. What an asset to have back! Welcome back! and continued success to the boy's bball team!

He was a great high school basketball player. If he was a few inches taller, he'd still be playing in the NBA.

With basketball season right around the corner I'm hoping Todd will bring some integrity to Montgomery's program. Unfortunately, Todd is still off fulfilling his football obligations so he can't oversee some of the rules violations taking place within the program. We can only hope that he is able to stick around during the off season to stop the practices/open gym's during August, coaching during "open gym's", coaching summer league games, contact with players during the off season and others.

One last note: Many of the multi-sport athletes from previous years and current middle school players have been told to make basketball their only focus or get out of the program. That's unfortunite and it's no way to build a program. Hopefully Todd will be able to change that philosophy.

Todd is tremendous asset to this program, let’s just hope that he can make a difference.

Good Luck Todd!!

Harsh words Wrangler. Any high school coach who encourages kids to only play his/her sport is making a big mistake. I hope Coach Montgomery is not actually doing that.

I have three kids on my block that play or played basketball at the middle school, their all saying the same thing. Their parents are the ones that are more upset and I can’t blame them. If anyone can remedy the situation it’s Todd. He was a multi-sport athlete and he knows the importance of other sports in developing a well rounded ball player.

On the other hand, Montgomery is trying to build a program and to be competitive year in and year out the athletes now days can’t just play basketball four or five months out of the year. It’s an interesting dilemma.

Wrangler,
That's the reason there's only three juniors playing this year.
He was brought here to make a program very good. He has done that with commited players and that is what has made Hoover better.

Is the Hoover basketball program better?? Sure they’ve won some games during the regular season against some weak opponents. They would have won those games with any coach. This year will be no different. Are we basing success on games won during the regular season? If so, the program is better. Playoff wins are what constitute a winning program. Previous coaches took their teams further into the playoffs with less talented players.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, it's an interesting question on how to develop a successful program

I can assure you this is happening. I will give you 3 examples that I know for a fact that have happened. I heard about all 3 of these situations directly from parents.

Example #1 8th grader very good multiple sport athlete was approached by Montgomery during summer basketball and was told it was getting close to the point that he needed to make a choice of what sport he was going to play. (This happened this summer so no choices have been made yet)

Example #2 A sophomore was told by Montgomery he needed to either pick football or basketball . The young man picked basketball. The next year he saw little if any playing time and was basically ignored by the basketball coaches during practice. He is participating in zero high school sports this year. The young man would have probably had a good chance to play for this years Hoover football team.

Example #3 2 good basketball players who happened to be good baseball players were “asked” by Montgomery not to play baseball for Hoover. Fortunately parents stepped in a said they would be playing baseball. They did not however play summer baseball. Time will tell how this decision plays out.

There are other examples I have heard of but not directly from at least a parent so I will not list them. I am also aware of at least 4 other good basketball players that did not or do not play basketball because there was no flexibility by the basketball program to allow them to participate in other sports. I want Hoover to have a successful basketball program as much as any other Hoover fan but I have been wondering for a while if we are going about it in a way that is in the kids best interests. It is a shame but there are boys at the middle school level that are already starting to think about what sport or sports that they are not going to play in high school. I can tell you for a fact that this is a direct result of the Montgomery philosophy of basketball and basketball only.

IMO a person can be committed to more than 1 sport. It is also my opinion that basketball can be played for more than 4 months a year even if a kid plays 3 sports. I know it can be done because I did it. In the Hoover basketball system all summer leagues are in the evening. Why? If the summer basketball leagues were in the morning or afternoon there would be very little conflict with summer baseball. Summer basketball leagues usually only consist of 2 or 3 games a week so that would leave 4 or 5 days to fit in football conditioning. It isn’t easy but that is the choice the athlete should be making not a varsity coach.

When did the Hoover basketball team peak last season? IMO it was about mid-season just prior to the CCC game. We were lucky to get past the first tournament game with Marietta. The team looked tired or maybe burnt out to me. Playing one sport or playing the same sport for 12 months will eventually take a toll on a 16 or 17 year old kid. We saw that at the end of last year. If a kid plays in a summer basketball league that should be enough out of season basketball if coached properly during the regular basketball season. It would be hard to convince me that if the kids play summer ball and the coach has them for 3 or 4 months they should be at about or at their peak and successful come tournament time. If this isn’t true either the coach isn’t very good or there isn’t enough talent on the team.

Mboyj03, it is OK with you that 2 out of approximately 180 to 200 boys from last years senior class participated in the basketball program and only 3 from this years junior class will be playing or on the team?

Well the thing is that the only sophmore, what is now a junior, that had some sugnificant playing time quit which is John Bursch.

Which juniors are still playing? This current junior class had lots of succcess in middle school. It's a shame to see so few playing now.

Interesting comments coming out of NC. Is there a problem with your all everything coach and his staff?

I’ve never been impressed with Montgomery’s coaching style. Playing six, possibly seven kids all year, being up by 20 + and still not clearing the bench until the last minute or two, pressing while up by 20+, burning his teams out around midseason and now expecting total commitment all year around from middle school and high school athletes! This guy’s a joke.

Please keep him in NC, you guys deserve him.

Gates and Moriariti (sp) are the only two left after Bertch quit. From what I hear around school their not to excited about playing this year.

Pocock, one of the seniors, left also. He and Bertch were the only rebounders we had this year. Hopefully Wackerly can make everything he throws up or it will be a loooong year. Just like football.

WOW!

I thought Todd was coming in to coach the “big men”. If Pocock’s not playing do we have anyone over 6’1”? Bball’s right, this could be a long season. Fortunately, Montgomery has another light schedule so he can get a good tournament seed and loose in the second round.

I do not have a problem with Montgomery as a coach other than his basketball and only basketball philosophy. It may have worked at Triway but I really don’t think it will work in the long run at Hoover.

What about Whitacre? Isn't he a junior and is he still playing?

He's still playing but should see more time with the JV team.

With the recent defections he may be pressed into getting some varsity minutes. He's still only 6'2" or 6'3" and is very weak up top. Not much presence around the hoop. He needs more time to develop.

Fetzer,

I'm glad we sent you and your boys packing:laugh: :help:

If your speaking of last basketball season ,this is another year and it sounds like the only thing Hoover has going for it this year in boys basketball is Wackerly. Double team him or he misses a few shots then what do you have?

This year will be just like football for the Green/Hoover rivalry.

I think you missed the meaning of CB's post. He was referring to you as Fetzer i.e. The Fetzer with Pepper as the boys leaving. Am I correct CB?

No problem, I love the Hoover/Green rivalry but there are several things about your current coaching staff and their arrogant attitudes that makes me and other people dislike the entire community. I know there are great people in NC but Montgomery and his pathetic assistant coaches are embassadors for the community and they don't represent you folks very well.

who is even hoover's 5th starter. i know that the 4 seniors are starting, but their 5th starter no matter who it is is probably a weak link without any or little varsity experience

From what I know it is going to be Tim Gates.

Sorry CB I'm still not on the same page, it must be an inside NC thing. I remember Pepper but I didn't know much about him or his coaching staff. I can say one thing though, he and his coaches must have conducted thenselves like professionals in the public eye or I would have remembered them.

I can't say that for the current coach and his stooges

Well in two years Montgomery has won more playoff games than Pepper in 5 years. I might not agree for what he does in the regular season (playing 6-7 players a game) but he is a lot better than Pepper.

Hey Fetzer, did Montgomery throw something at your car? Run over your dog or something?

I have a concern with a part of Montgomery’s philosophy but that is it. Would you mind being a little more specific as to why you have your shorts in a knot? I thought I explained myself pretty well. Your turn. Do you mind if I counter any of your points? Is it OK if Mboy jumps in?

You dislike our entire community based on one or two people? If that's the case, then I don't really care if we get your respect. The opinion of people as closed minded as that means nothing to me.

wow what a prophet you are

18-2 (only losses to #1 Mckinley)
# 7 in Ohio
Wackerly averaging LESS than last year

imagine that...how do those sour grapes taste
