Biggest NCAA Upset Ever? Ramos over Lee or Owings over Gable

Spencer has of course battled and overcome injuries as courageously as anyone we have ever seen in this sport. Is his resume of his win streak, 3 timer, and the bonus machine enough to slate this as the biggest NCAA upset of all time?

Or was Larry Owings over 117-0 Gable in his last match of his NCAA career?

Or is there another?

Lee at another school could have made things much different. He may not have had the room or the improvement, but I certainly think he’s a 4 Timer with better management. True heartbreaker to see him lose but hats off to Ramos. Also to note - Ramos trailed 5-4 in 2 OT with 10 seconds left in the Quarters. A true miracle run for Ramos.

I think if Lee didn’t go down 8-1 in their regular season match this would have been an even bigger surprise and the biggest upset ever. Lee had a 99.9 percent chance to win the whole thing, but everybody’s .01 percent was in Ramos. So the privilege stays with Owings.

Well said. He shouldn’t have seen the mat at ALL last season. Who knows what goes on behind closed doors, though.

It's still Gable...
Agreed, although the argument is there that Owings was easily more accomplished than Ramos. But Gable likely was thought to be even more untouchable than Lee. Sad for me to wstch Lee struggle from neutral due to his numerous knee surgeries… ultimately that’s what led to his vulnerability.

I think Lee’s knees are of course not up to par. His international success could change our answers down the road as to how large this upset really was. I don’t think Lee finishes the tourney.

He loses his last championship match in high school to be a 4 timer and now at the ncaa to be a 4 timer.

I remember that match very well... I thought it was incredible how the Austin Desanto kid went on a "vision quest" to beat the great Spencer Lee. His exuberance was fantastic! Well, that fandom was VERY short lived 😕😂

Gable made -- and continues to make -- excuses. He said that he never heard of Larry Owings. Baloney; Owings was a stud and EVERYONE knew him -- especially Gable. His arrogance simply wouldn't allow him to admit that he simply got beat. It really is THIS simple.

I can't say for sure whether he really did or didn't know of him, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Gable hadn't heard of him. It was 1970 so of course no one had internet and coverage was minimal. When you add in the fact that Gable had extreme tunnel vision and was just focused on his wrestling I think it's entirely within the realm of possibility that Gable hadn't heard of him.

This is an interesting topic in and of itself. I remember my first time at Medina in the 70's and I pretty much knew no one. For me, it was an advantage. Not caring who they were allowed me to wrestle my matches, my way. No over-thinking an opponent.
The Gable/Owings argument is that Gable would've wrestled better had he known. Interesting subject.
I've heard this come up about international matches, before the internet and many guys thought it an advantage as well, to not know.

He was a 3 time finalist, one time champ. JR and SR year runner up. He beat Gable his SO year after going 3-1 in 4 total matches his Fr year. Sure Gable and everyone knew he was 👌

The weak will always discredit the strong, because the ignorant allow it. And for the record (before anyone gets offended)ignorant means lacking knowledge or awareness. It literally is not knowing. Doesn't mean someone is stupid, simply means they don't know.

Ben Peterson was upset as the #1 seed as well. Couple Olympic champs finishing 2nd and 4th two years before Munich!

OU w/ Harry Houska was the Ohio power in those days, normally finishing in the top 10 while tOSU was not on the board.

some other finals upset shockers :

hvt Lou Banach though badly outweighed pins Baumgartner

Ricky Stewart pins Dave Schultz

ncaa champ Mark Schultz moves up a wt (to 174 or 177) to beat 2x ncaa champ Ed Banach a 2xer who would become a 3xer
