Big Ten Basketball 2024-2025 Season

Not a very good tournament for the Big Ten with only 1 elite 8 team. Conference just isn’t very good like I suspected all year and lacks player speed and coaching across the board. If Dusty May is considered one of your leagues best coaches then you have a coaching problem
All that anybody remembers is who cuts down the nets. Remind us again who won the CFP.

Big Ten is OVERRATED in b ball every year. Remind me ,when was there last NC in hoops ??? Michigan St 25 yrs ago or something . And thats another thing Izzo. very good coach. but he has ONE , not 3 or 4 national championships as HC of MSU. Heck Danny Hurley already has more than him

Who the heck overrates them? I’ve never heard a single person say the Big 10 is the best hoops league

1) Tom Izzo has been to the Final Four 8 times — which I’d consider to be pretty damn impressive regardless of only having one title.

2) Pretty much everyone seemed to think the Big Ten was the 2nd/3rd best league this year and far behind the top of the SEC. The tournament results have pretty much matched up with the analytics. They had a ton of teams that were somewhere in the 10th-30th range nationally this year with no serious title contenders barring Michigan State making an unexpected run beyond tomorrow.

Kevin Willard officially moves on to Villanova. He really handled this in one of the worst ways you can as a person and completely disrespected Maryland.

Maryland should be thankful though. They can and should be better than what he gave them as I never thought he was a very good coach and was included in that cesspool of trash Big Ten coaches

I don’t blame Willard. Much like college football, the calendar is broken and needs to be changed. The transfer portal should not be open until the season is completed. Recruiting is the life blood, so when a coach is looking to take another job they need to start managing that roster immediately. The NCAA should not put the players and coaches in the position of hampering their ability to move while the tournament is still going. Same dynamic happens in the football bowl games and playoffs. Just change the portal windows and the problem is solved.

I do blame Willard, he should have just stepped down immediately rather than play this cat and mouse game like a soft bit**. There is a little blame on Marylands end too. They should have FIRED him once they got wind he was looking around. It's not like he had great success at Maryland and deserved a longer leash. He's not a very good coach

Coaches do it all the time. Players are allowed to do it now too. Again, the portal should be closed until the tournament is over and the season is officially concluded. Or do you think players on tourney teams that intend to hit the portal should just quit while their team is still playing?

Maryland IMO has a chance to score at major upgrade at the position. I’m not sure given their situation that the coach needs to be all that great, they just need to be great at recruiting.

A coach that could lock down most of the talent around DC and Baltimore would have the Terps at the top of the Big Ten and ranked in the top-10 nationally every year.

I think any coach who does this should be fired by said university on the spot. Not to mention Willard made himself look bad with the way he handled things leading up to this.

Players shopping themselves around while play is still going on should be removed from their team.

I do agree the transfer portal dates need to change but at the same time these kids are already coddled enough.

Big Ten finishes with only 1 elite 8 team and 0 Final Four teams.

Goes 1-3 over the weekend (is that math correct @wolves82 ?) vs the SEC and finishes 2-5 in total against that conference.

That is just absolutely despicable. This conference is an absolute dumpster fire and people actually still defend Diebler on here finishing so bad in such a bad conference

26 years and counting now since our last title

i read today that indiana lost their entire roster. talk about a rebuild.

has that ever happened before?

Worked for some of the mid-majors with new coaches to rebuild from scratch. Might be best thing for them.

Purdue: is hoping they can keep Smith. RUmors to Alabama, few other places. Post game against Houston and reporter pointed out to Painter that Purdue had 11 baskets fourth quarter (I think) and that Smith had 11 assists. Painter basically said he want surprised, that's their "system."

That there could have lost Smith who might want to go somewhere else to show it's not just the system.

Big Ten really does need better coaches. Looking at the power 5 conferences the Big Ten is definitely dead last in quality of coaches across the conference. Big reason why the conference is so bad
Oats to Maryland is great for the league, but OSU still has Diebler.

The Maryland athletic department couldn’t afford the one team that actually generates a revenue an extra night in a hotel, but it’s Willard’s fault?

So Willard couldn't wait to get out of Maryland and alluded to some "lack of resources" issues as the reason. But Oats is going to leave Bama for the Maryland job? Does he not want to play 2nd fiddle to the football program at Bama, because at first glance this doesn't make sense to me.

Compared to Willard, Oats might be more confident in his own ability to make the Maryland a championship contender.

Word on the streets is Alabama NIL money is tightening up in general, which in a state like Alabama, will affect the basketball team before it does the football team.

Right. Oats would be a step in the right direction for the conference. Hopefully the conference moving to a better direction puts more pressure on the OSU administration to find the right coach. Boy would having Andy Geiger (Best AD in OSU history) right now as an advisor on that coaching search do wonders

With that being said I don't see anything really linking Oats to the Maryland job. Their insiders don't believe that smoke at all and looks like it will probably be Tony Skinn which would be a step down from Willard. A Big Ten type hire let's call it should that happen
