If you are or know of any former OHHS wrestlers and matscotts, please pass the information below along to them.....
Saturday, December 14th, 2013 we are hosting an alumni night for ALL former wrestlers AND matscotts prior to the OHHS/Elder wrestling match. We ask that all alumni arrive to OHHS no later than 6:15 PM as we are pushing for a 6:30 PM start time with announcing everyone's name. To RSVP for the event, please send an email to "campolongo_j@ohlsd.org" and leave your name and graduation year.
With that being said, 12/14/13 is going to be a great day for Oak Hills Wrestling!
Not only will we have our alumni night on the night we wrestle our biggest rival, but we will be inducting the inaugural class in the newly started Oak Hills Wrestling Hall of Fame!!!!!
Class of 2013
Dick Witsken (1965-1966)
The man who started it all! Coach Witsken was a teacher at OHHS and helped jump-start the Highlander wrestling program. He is the one whom had the plan in hand and pieced together a team that would soon have a much bigger impact on the school than anyone anticipated. Unfortunately, Coach Witsken is no longer here with us but you can bet he is smiling down on what has grown from the seed he planted back in 1965. Accepting Coach Witsken's award on this night will be his 4 sons and his grand-daughter whom is currently a senior at OHHS and will be singing the national anthem prior to the match (she is a member of Varsity Singers).
Frank Shaut (1966-1974)
The one whom took us to the top! Coach Shaut was the head wrestling coach for 8 seasons and amassed an 84-16 dual meet record, coached 10 district champions, and coached our lone state champion with John Steele taking the title in 1974 and the team finishing 3rd; it's highest finish at the state tournament. Coach Shaut is an example of one who went out on top as in his last season as head coach his team finished 9-0 in duals, won the league title, sectional title, district title, and finished 3rd at the state tournament.
Dick Roche (1974-2000)
For over 2 decades, Coach Roche was the face of this program and a man everyone wanted to work for. His record-setting dual meet record is 227-64-3 and is 1 of 12 school records that he currently possesses. Coach Roche has coached 170 league champions and won 23 league titles. He coached 60 sectional champions with 4 sectional team titles, 20 district champions with 2 district team titles & 10 state placers. His best season as head coach is arguably the 1977 team where they finished 11-0 in duals, swept team titles at leage (7 individuals champs), sectionals (4 individual champs) & districts (2 champs). Also in 1977, the program saw 12 of the 14 wrestlers qualifying for the district tournament (school record) and 7 of those 12 qualifying for the state tournament (school record). Coach Roche may be retired from coaching but he still today work at Oak Hills High School and is still currently a wrestling official where he has a front row seat to watch the highlanders compete on the mat.
These 3 inductees will be recognized after the alumni night but prior to the match being wrestled between OHHS/Elder. These are the first 3 coaches of Oak Hills Wrestling and it's only fitting that they be the first ones inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Please join us on Saturday, December 14th as we recognize those whom have wrestled for Oak Hills, induct 3 key pieces of Oak Hills Wrestling, and of course watch today's Highlanders compete in a dual vs Elder.
Thanks!
