I know there are a lot of Band of Brothers fans on here. Speilberg and Hanks are working on a Band of Brothers sequel show that will focus on an air support company called the Bomber Boys that took part in D-Day. Shooting is to start next year and once completed it will be released by Apple's streaming service. The mini-series will be based on the book Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany by Donald L. Miller. The book follows the Bomber Boys through D-Day and the European campaign and also details life of the captured in German prison camps.
 
 
I think BoB is one of if not the the best war dramas ever developed. I hope the new series does not just try to comp what they did with BoB or even the Pacific and I am glad that the POW experience is also included. Too many times the POW experience either plays second fiddle to an unlikely plot device like the eponymous named Bride over the River Kwai and the Russian roulette angle of Deer Hunter or even made light of ala Hogan's Heroes.

Hogan's Heroes. What a concept- a comedy about a German POW camp. Only in Hollywood...
 
The first President Bush was part of this group. BTW, you’ll never convince me the Japanese Army wasn’t far more vicious & savage than the Nazis.

I thought that that show was the most obnoxous show ever put on TV, especially when there were American pows in Nam prison camps.

Does it make you feel better knowing the lead actor was bludgeoned to death while filming a low budget porno?
 
And back to the topic of this thread ... Band of Brothers was an amazing story told about the real men that fought their way across Europe. The interviews with the actual soldiers were humbling. I have DVD's of this series and The Pacific. The Pacific story was not told as well as Band of Brothers. I will watch Bomber Boys and hope that it is as good as Band of Brothers.
 
BoB every main lead was a superstar. They all had stories. People can quote the line-up like their favorite ball team. Pacific didn't come off that way to me.

While the Pacific was an inferior series to BoB it did try to illustrate the difference in the theaters and in particular the disposition of the enemy. The Japanese were fighting for a living God and you add in a culture that basically didn't allow soldiers to surrender and you have a recipe for some really intense fighting.

They killed more civilians than armed combatants. Nearly 30% of POWS died under their watch, compared to just 4% with Allied POWs under the Germans.
 
It's an odd mindset that allows you to treat those from your country (Jews, gays and lesbians, Catholics, etc.) worse than than enemy combatants.

I really got a feel for the Japanese torture from the book Unbroken.

Was "better" the word you meant to use? Or does that section refer to Japanese and not Germany as I assumed?

Unbroken is a good book but just an OK film. Does anyone have a take on another POW film, Andersonville? While at times a little too "made for TV" in feel but historians said it did do a good job of showing the true brutality of the "everyman for himself" vibe in the camp and the way Col Wirtz ran it.

Agreed. The book was outstanding and the movie was disappointing.
 
Absolutely love Band of Brothers and cannot turn it off whenever I stumble upon it. There's also a book I read called "Beyond Band of Brothers" that delves further into the stories of the Easy Company. Hoping this "sequel" lives up to expectations.

The closing credits shows a U.S. Army officer's peaked hat hanging on a German
officers Pickelhaube helmet; the Pickelhaube fell out of use after the Great War
(AKA The War to End All Wars / WW-I) except for some ceremonial occasions.


Hogan's Heroes which ran from1965 to1971 (6 seasons); was inspired by the
success of the the WW-II comedy-drama film of 1953 Stalag 17, 3 Oscar
nominations; Wm. Holden won for best Actor.

Omar you raise an interesting point. I would agree that the Japanese were far more savage to the allies, both military & civilian then the Germans were to the Western Allies.

But the Germans were definitely the most savage when it came to fighting on the Eastern Front. Japanese military observers were shocked at the widespread brutality of the Nazis as they pushed across Russia in 1941. One Japanese military attache asked their German counterpart "there won't be anything left for you to exploit" and the German apparently replied "that's the intention".

I suspect the level of savagery in these cases is dictated by racism. The Japanese had racist views of Americans, Chinese, Australians, British and Filipinos. The Nazis had deeply racist views of Russian Slavs.

The war between Hitler & Stalin was the most savage in human history. The fact was that Nazi Germany AND Soviet Russia were among the most evil & odious nations in human history. That their war would be the nastiest civilization had ever known was almost predictable.

If you want to check out a great book on the Soviet/Nazi war from the German POV read "The Forgotten Soldier". This guy lived through fighting on the Eastern Front and he's no apologist for the Nazis. A stunning read.

I read the Book "Savage Continent" about a decade ago about all of the atrocities in Europe after the war. They went from having one centralized torturer in Hitler to hundreds of regional torturers. The book was so damn disturbing I stopped reading about half way through.
