Are you a true West Sider??

I dont quite get what Kroger is doing these days other than raising prices like crazy. My store in Independence gets completely re-shuffled around probably every 6 months or so. Just as soon as i relearn where everything is.

They screwed up royally by not making Delhi a large marketplace. They half-assed a remodel of a kroger in Florence that's about the size of the Price Hill store, but not as nice. They are getting ready to build a new store in Edgewood/Erlanger but won't make that as large as it needs to be either.

And don't get me started on how every store has 40 employees clogging the aisles filling click list orders.

You see some stores that are neglected (Delhi, Ferguson, White Oak, bunch of NKY locations) while others are constantly rebuilt, like the one in Dent, which is on it's 3rd store in under 30 years, and apparently already getting remodeled.

I just don't understand what they are trying to do.
One small rebuttal; I don’t think it’s the groceries causing the price increases.

I agree because Aldi, Costco, and Sam's Club are WAY cheaper overall. There's only some things I get at Kroger because they don't have a few preferred products at Aldi or Costco.

So, it's not the groceries themselves.... it's Kroger.

Kroger is planning to spend a total of $45 million dollars remodeling 15 stores in the Cincinnati and Dayton areas including stores in Green Township (I assume that’s the Dent Marketplace), Colerain Township and Monfort Heights.

Is the Glenway Kroger city of Cincy or Green Township. I know the line is right around where that store is located. Maybe that could be the Green Township store getting the renovations?

Good question. According to Google Maps that store is right inside the city limits, but that store would make more sense.

They've been doing a lot down in Harrison. I have heard JTM has donated a ton to the high school to help update their athletic facilities.

My question is, and I'm completely ignorant on this, where is all the money coming from? JTM used to be everywhere with tons of products in the grocery stores 20 or so years ago. They used to have the butcher in Delhi. They don't have very many products in stores anymore and IMHO, their frozen products were always pretty lousy. Have they re-designed what they do, meaning do they make products under different labels? Or something else?

Good for JTM and Harrison for the expansion. More jobs, more tax base, and I'm sure more donations for the community. This is a win for everyone in that area.

From what I understand, they mostly sell to schools across the US as well as food distributors.

Its been a while since I've been on the board. Several weeks ago I was reminded of the musicality of the westside. In a single seven day period I attended an outstanding performance of "Beautiful" at the Incline Theater (founded by Tim Perrino (74)), then that Wednesday I saw Curly and the Q-balls at Jim & Jacks and then that Saturday I saw Ricky Nye, "King of the Boogy-Woogy Piano" (aka Rick Nieheisel, also Elder class of 74) at the Crow's Nest.

Today I heard that Calvary Bash is getting back together for a gig at Hail Mary's in Cheviot tomorrow night.

The westside is rich with musical talent.

Incline Theatre does a great job with its series of musicals and plays. Below is the their summer schedule with shows and times.

And I don't think I have heard the name Calvary Bash in over 40 years. Unbelievable that they are still around.

Yes, I tried to get tickets for "Jersey Boys" yesterday. The whole run was sold out before it even opened. They are definitely doing something right there and they are a credit to the whole westside.

I get the overall point you're making but Kroger's prices are very reasonable, especially with all their digital coupons. Living in northeast Ohio and the most prevalent grocery chain is Giant Eagle. Talk about overpriced. At least Meijer is making more investments up here so it's creating competition.

May have already been mentioned on this thread but I heard they are supposed to be closing Roy Rogers and possibly putting in a Taco Bell there.

Also Penn Station is going in where the old Gold Star was.

Wow, if that is true Roy Roger’s didn’t last long. I will say the food quality didn’t match what I remember from back in the late 70s and early 80s.

If true, that's crazy because they are supposed to be building, at least 5 more Roy Rogers all by the same restaurant franchise group.

Also, I don't understand how Penn Station stays in business....like many places the quality is nowhere close to as good as it used to be, it's obscenely expensive, and the sandwiches keep getting smaller.

Sorry for the poor photo quality but the old Alison Landscaping building at Anderson Ferry and Rapid Run that was previously a BP station and a Sohio before that is being torn down.

It appears things may come full circle for that property which is located at 889 Anderson Ferry Rd and if I had to guess we'll see a gas station located there again eventually. The property which totals 2.317 acres was sold in 2022 for $550,000 to Takhar Investment LLC of Tipp City, OH. Some might recognize the name Takhar Investment LLC as it is the company who purchased the old Frank's Nursery and Crafts location in Cheviot to build a new Marathon gas station.

How long was Alison there?

Long time driver through Cincinnati (probably 8 times a year I drive through Cincinnati on I-75) but never stop.

2 weeks ago I was in the city for about 9 days as part of a College Board Conference / Convention and finally had a chance to drive around the city, both eastside and westside.

Couple things stood out

Xavier's campus is very unfriendly haha........ for parking purposes at least. I wanted to stop and walk around the campus but feared getting towed because every lot had a sign saying for student parking only. So I just drove around the campus. Nice campus however, just couldn't find the visitor parking I guess.

LOVE the old school architecture that is Hughes High School. Calhoun street by UC is very interesting.

I did not realize that ALL the streets downtown are one way haha. I figured out the lay out after a few days.

Why are Western Hills and Dater on the same campus / land?

Kenwood Centre Mall. Never seen so many law enforcement vehicles at a suburban mall before in my life.

Withrow High School from what I can tell is in a very nice part of the city but the school's demographics don't seem to fit that. What am I missing?

Indian Hill and Madeira....boy those are some pricey houses it looked like driving through at least.

Queen City Avenue looked a little rough.

I did however enjoy the city. I enjoyed venturing into all the little neighborhoods, cities and towns that make up the city and getting to see what makes them each unique. Everyone I encountered, even the panhandlers haha was very friendly.

Was this Xavier University or St. Xavier High School?

Hughes is a beautiful school, and also very pretty inside. I believe the outside has been shown in a few shows and movies. Calhoun I dislike personally.

One of many baffling decisions by Cincinnati Public. The schools actually connect inside the buildings too.

Kenwood has seen quite a few smash and grabs the past few years because it has very high end stores and it's right next to the highway on ramp. You can be long gone before the cops ever show up.

CPS allows students to go to any high school in the district, it's not based on where you live. Withrow has a significant portion of it's students that are from Westwood and Price Hill believe it or not. While Withrow is in the most expensive zip code in Cincinnati Proper, none of those families send their kids there. You have Walnut Hills high school and Clark Montessori high within about 2 miles of Withrow. You also have Summitt Country Day about a mile away and Purcell Marian is around 2 miles away. Cincinnati Country Day and Sevin Hills are also quite close.
Queen City Avenue looked a little rough.
It is. But there's WAY rougher.

Glad you enjoyed our town.

I've done the AP grading once probably 10 years ago. I could not stand the monotony of that. Longest week of my life lol.

Yes by the last day I was little stir crazy to say the least.

Xavier University. I never did get a chance to check out St X High School not Elder sadly.

I did however check out quite a few UDF's haha. Did not get a chance to try any ice cream though. Maybe next time.

Thank you for the run down. I also did not know Cincinnati at one point tried to build a subway system.

Yes, construction stopped due to the Depression. They only tunnelled a little over a mile. Like many things in Cincy, it was half-assed and never completed to fruition.
