8th Division Coming ????

Dude, there is no opinion that matters other than his. Bang your head on a wall, run a cheese grater over your knee caps or put your hand in the garbage disposal and all of that would be less painful than debating with someone that feels the border is secure, the economy is great, guns are violence but knives and people aren't, the world will end in 12 years do to climate change, probably a Paul Ehrlich disciple of the pending apocalypse and HS sports are useless person. There comes a time when you are hung up and just need to cut the line...this is one of those times.

My advice, press on with your sound reasoning of OH football and ditch this b***ch

I blocked him after about his 3rd post last month. I don’t even see what people are responding too, Judging by the responses, I’m not missing anything.

No you cannot, not on an Ohio High School Football thread, because as everybody knows, Massillon is the definition of Ohio High School Football, and the definition of Ohio High School football is and forever will be, Massillon
Wow...Massillon might be considered the definition of Ohio HS FB to Massillon fans, but there are so many other programs that either A. won an actual state title on the field, or B. had really good programs but no press popularity during the voting days. Massillon is a good study for the history of Ohio HS FB, but we're at 50 years, two divisions, and still no championship. Maybe it's time to go the Glenville route for that elusive trophy.

Well actually due to the marketing of the program, it is true that it's hard to find a place where they have not heard of Massillon Ohio the place where a full sized football is presented to every baby boy born in the Massillon City Hospital.

I travel all over. And in context of high school football, other than someone from Ohio asking me if I've seen their Ohio home town team play, the most common Ohio school I've been asked about has been Massillon. A close second would probably be Akron SVSM (because of LeBron).

So yeah, outside of the state, Massillon is the standard bearer for Ohio high school football.

Massillon arguably better team than State Champion Lima Senior 1996 def Lima 28-14

Lima Sr eventually Def Cleve St Ignatius in State Finals at PBTS. State Champions.

Who knows why Massillon nosedived at end. Brunswick game played in a blizzard Massillon passing game ruined.

1996 Mck predecessor of 1997 State and National Championship for Mck

The 21-0 beatdown put on then undefeated Massillon by Mck in week ten must have demoralized them or something.

video celebrating 25 year anniversary of McK 1997 National Championship season:

Football's a funny game. That Massillon has never won the tournament is just a quirk of football.

I call it the curse of Davey Gable Bill MIchaels and John Brideweiser.

The Mck fans here will appreciate that video. I was at the McK Moeller State Championship Finals in 1997 one heck of a Moeller team with Anthony Munoz son Michael as one of the captains what a beast he was. Great football game, that one.

So the weirdo who constantly claims state championships are worthless and jumps on small school threads with no affiliation just to start fights is actually an angry Massillon fan... Makes so much sense now, disappointed I didn't see it from the beginning

Probably because everyone knows that hasn’t happened. Other then maybe some “bar talk” there has not been serious discussions within the OHSAA to add another division.
Agreed. And I don't see a reason for another division unless it's to add 8-man. There's really no need for another 11 man division on its own.

Though I would argue to maybe restructure the 7 11-man classes. Shrink D1 down to 64 teams, shrink D7 down to 64. Split the rest of the state between the middle five classes evenly. There's parity in the middle. It's much harder with the giant schools and small D1s, and the incredibly tiny schools against the 'near the line' D7 schools. The difference between a 230 and a 250 school is nominal. Even 200 to 270 isn't much of an issue. But 70 to 110 is a huge gap. Just as is 550 and 1400. If the point of the playoffs is to pair teams together who are similar and competitively the same, then the middle of the pile doesn't need as many classes as the extreme top and extreme bottom of the membership.

well they never gave out footballs when there was one, so....
Both of my brothers have one,
so….
By all means go back into the rant where they didn’t give them out, even though if you call the booster club right now they will bring one to either of the Canton hospitals for your newborn.

you guys should see this thread the R25 D7 guys gushing over claims of being the top division and region in the State of Ohio they could whip St Eds if they ever got the chance, they are the king kongs of OHSAA schoolboy football. ROFLMAO

You aren't very good at reading or reading comprehension. Please point out exactly where any of that was said.

I don’t know about an 8th division in 11 man football.
However, maybe create a division for 8 man?

I think that’s going to grow with the smaller schools that have declining enrollments or schools that want to add the sport. Lake Center Christian in hartville should maybe consider starting with 8 man football to build a program.

In all seriousness, I read about the footballs being given out to newborns but just chalked it up to a legend. Is that true? If so, it be neat to see the senior players with their newborn ball....

It’s not a regulation size football. It’s a plastic mini football that you seen thrown out at games by the cheerleaders.

There now is some Talk among some leadership with in the OHSAA of Adding a 8th Division and revamping the Finals format along with the Regionals. At that time D 2 would be limited to only 72 Schools.
That sounds like INSANITY! Florida, with approx. 20,000,000 population, has only EIGHT classifications, similar to your divisions! Georgia with about 1,000,000 fewer people than Ohio, is going from seven classifications to six in two years. Of course, Georgia, geographically, is far larger than Ohio. Having seven REALLY created travel problems in South and East Georgia in particular. Because WE are obligated to play EVERY team in our conference. Our game with Richmond Hill, South of Savannah, was a one way trek of 230 miles, because our conference currently only has five teams. That will change drastically, when we go to six classifications in 2024.

No real answers, as attendance continues to decline, but from my observation, the move from Thanksgiving weekend to the December weekend has hurt overall attendance. "Back in the day" the OSU-Mich game was the Saturday BEFORE Thanksgiving, but that changed some years ago when the conference title games became a "thing." December has the conference title games, Christmas season is starting, etc... Too many balls in the air for most, except for schools that are relatively "new" to the state finals or for those with family/friends actually playing in the game.
Friday actually seems to be the best day recently for attendance, regardless of division. Weather can be worse in December, but was not this year.

Division II – Thursday, 7 p.m. (5,120)
No. 2 Akron Archbishop Hoban (14-1) vs. No. 5 Toledo Central Catholic (14-1)
Not as much of a community-based following as some other divisions, along with possibly the worst time slot of the 7. That and weather was so-so: Nighttime game temps in the high 20's, windy during the day but down to 8-9 mph by game time, a little snow.

Division V – Friday, 10:30 a.m. (6,393)
No. 1 Ironton (15-0) vs. No. 2 Canfield South Range (15-0)
Really good community support from both sides, especially given that Ironton has been there 3 of last 4 years; Canfield strong contingent.
Weather was relatively mild but winds were 15-20; dry.

Division III – Friday, 3 p.m. (7,790)
No. 3 Canfield (13-1) vs. Carroll Bloom-Carroll (14-1)
Largest crowd of the 7. Combo of two solid community-backed programs, some history of success in POs but no prior state championship wins.
Weather in high 40's - 50, windy (18-20 mph) but dry.

Division I – Friday, 7:30 p.m. (7,317)
No. 1 Lakewood St. Edward (14-1) vs. No. 4 Springfield (13-1)
Biggest schools, best time slot (Friday night), maybe a disappointing crowd when compared to D-III and D-V. St. Ed isn't the biggest school, community is far-reaching and has been there so often not as special any longer. Springfield - too far, no tradition.
Weather mild, temps in low 50's, but winds were gusting from 19-33 mph; dry.

Division VI – Saturday, 10:30 a.m. (3,960)
No. 1 Maria Stein Marion Local (15-0) vs. No. 2 Kirtland (15-0)
Was surprised this wasn't larger crowd, as this may have been best matchup of the 7. ML fan-base with some championship fatigue, especially given the drive and early start, and the weather was not cooperative. Also fighting the busy Saturday schedule of NCAA games, other interests, etc., and the 10:30 start may have required overnight stay for many in the ML contingent.
Weather: temps started at 50 but dropped during game, with rain most of morning prior to game and winds sustained at 24, gusting to 40.

Division VII – Saturday, 3 p.m. (3,782)
No. 7 New Bremen (12-3) vs. No. 1 Warren John F. Kennedy (13-1)
Smallest school division, NB similar drive as ML, and had won a title not that long ago.
Saturday in December seems just not as appealing as games on Thanksgiving weekend in yesteryear. NCAA conference title games, Christmas parties, etc. competing for time, not to mention weather can be that much worse (though not this year). Even just the thought of potential snow a week in advance will keep some away in December.
Weather: Temps had dropped into 30's by game time, winds sustained at 18, gusting to 23; rain had ended before game.

Division IV – Saturday, 7:30 p.m.
No. 2 Cincinnati Wyoming (15-0) vs. No. 1 Cleveland Glenville (14-0)
Cincinnati team and a Glenville team without much community support - combined with 2nd worst time slot up against Big Ten Championship Game. Not that surprising that crowds were small.
Weather: Temps had dropped to high 20's, wind decreased to sustained at 13, no precip.

D1: 7317
D2: 5120
D3: 7790
D4: 4168
D5: 6393
D6: 3960
D7: 3782
At LEAST your championships aren't charged $600,000 for stadium rental, and $45.00 for admission and parking. Arthur Blank is a CLOWN!

Correction. The FHSAA has restructured football this year (2022 season just finished) and now has 9 classes. Split into Metro, Suburban, and Rural. So now there's 4M, 3M, 2M, 1A, 4S, 3S, 2S, 1S and 1R classes now.

It's not about population, it's about the number of schools. Georgia has just over 400 schools playing for 8 football titles (~50 per division), Ohio has over 700 playing for 7 titles. So in reality, if we're saying that more divisions is more insanity, your state's almost twice as insane as ours ;)

Ohio has the same problem PA has but PA allows co-ops to there's a ton of small teams that buddy up that reduces the numbers. PA only has about 540 football teams.

Other states that have the county wide school districts have much fewer schools and generally a lot fewer tiny schools compared to PA and Ohio

Sounds like those other states are the ones with the problem 🤷🏼‍♂️

Not sure what problem this would be trying to correct.

The only problems that I see are too few teams having a real shot at winning the championship and by extension, smaller crowds due to the same teams always being there.
TOTALLY AGREE.....OTHER THAN THAT, OHSAA FOOTBALL SETUP IS PRETTY DARN GOOD.

Classic. They have declared themselves the standard bearer for high school football despite over a half century with zero championships.

I was told this 2 years ago. I might have posted it after a left unsaid coach spoke to me about it off the record.

But he DID make the stetement....correct?

I found this statement in a press release on the Pattakos Law Firm Web site.

When the subject of the young man in question not returning texts from the coaching staff was brought up....

"Wattley, McLeod and other members of the staff were like father's to them (the players), who communicated with them every day to check on them and always did whatever they could to make sure they were eating, attending class, completing their school work and we're otherwise safe and healthy." "These young men also confirmed (sounds like the players made the initial comment) how concerning it is to the team when a player doesn't respond to text messages from coaches or teammates AS FOUR OF THE TEAMS PLAYERS HAVE SUFFERED GUNSHOT WOUNDS IN THE LAST YEAR ALONE."

You say, "no reporter is willing to write a story about it." This appears to be true....BUT, a good reporter would ask enough questions to either confirm it....or deny it.

I know if I was a reporter and I heard the attorney for the coach make the statemen that....four players on the team in the spotlight suffered gunshot wounds in the last year alone....personally....the story i was going to print would have changed at that very moment.

You say nobody has brought it up in the last year and a half, only JLP....you then say you wonder why....to be honest with you....I wonder why too.

Peter Pattakos is the man who made the comment, since you're so concerned with proving Mr. Pattakos and myself wrong, I suggest you contact the Law Firm....or Josh Weir and get some answers.
Could you send a link to the page that shows this "quote?" A lawyer that can't spell? I'd like to see this.
