700 WLW

Not the news room at WLW, but an interesting exchange this morning from Thom and White House correspondent Karen Travers. She was going on about the gloom and doom of the tariff situation and Thom mentioned that many liberals like Nancy Pelosi went on record years ago saying the US needed to pound some of these other countries with tariffs with all the goods we bring in. So Travers basically says she's not debating what politicians said 20 years ago. It was a little fridgid to say the least.
I remember Mike on many occasions reminding simply provides information from Washington, she doesn't write the script, she just reads it. Mike would occasionally question Travers but they rarely got into any kind of debate.
i would love for Gary Jeff or Mike Allen to pull Sandy Collins in for a half hour and make her bias come out... besides what she does when she reads the news

It would be interesting to see if there are any exchanges when off air between hosts and news people. One of the biggest fallacies about radio news is it's just a tip of the iceberg and very few details are given. Unfortunately for alot of people, this is the ONLY news they get, so they only get the sensationalized version to draw in the listener. For those who read newspaper or used to read them, it's not much different. The headline is written by someone different, not the person who penned the article. And how many times have you read a headline, then the article and there is alot of difference. The headline is only served to draw you to read the article.

lol, I heard Thom go off and she turned frosty quick. didn't hear how it went the next day though. I think Mike had the same issue with her at the beginning too, but they quickly adjusted and became a good team

I'd guess Travers has to "break in" the rookies. Again WLW pays for that news service and she's just reading what she's told. Our gripe is the angle these supposed "news" companies take.

Note: tonight's game is only on Apple TV, or of course 700 WLW radio.

A week in and I think I'm already sick of Thom. He is too much lollipops and rainbows. As a listener you get a feeling of when someone is blowing smoke up your rear and that is the vibe I get from Thom. I got the same vibe when he did Reds games and we'd be getting our heads kicked in and he would go on about how great the ballpark is and how great the banks are and how the Reds do Firework Fridays better than anybody. In get a used car salesman vibe from Thom. I will probably start listening to podcast on the way to work after listening to WLW every morning for the last 20 years

I somewhat agree with you. I thought he said many things that were one time type of comments and can't have too much more to communicate on those issues.

But to be fair, he is a very gifted communicator, and it was week one , where he was trying to get off on the right foot and not stir the pot. But yesterday he said he would be calling weather reports that stated "mostly cloudy " as "partly sunny ". While that is a positive vs negative position, it wreaks of symantics.
I wish him well.

I liked him when he did NFL games on Fox. That was the best version of Thom. He obviously got too comfortable doing Reds games. He is a natural play by play guy, not a morning drive guy. But they say Willie was a rough listen at first too. Also Thom needs an edict to only mention his dad once per show instead of two or three times each segment. We get it, Marty is your dad. The more he mentions Marty, the more this feels like a nepotism hire.

I think one of McConnell's endearing traits was his ability to be the "common man". Thom just isn't that and he's not going to be that. Yes he's gets a little sappy at times but I like him. I hoped he's get a shot at being back in the Reds seat but I'm sure there's too many layers to get through for that. Not a big fan of Sadak.
Thom has no problem going at the liberals and he makes it a point to put his conservative views out there. I think he's trying a little too hard right now since it's early, he'll even out.

And don't ever forget Kyle Schwarber is the pride of Middletown....:ROFLMAO:

bring back Tracy Jones
Tracy was really good at Extra Innings, but not so much with the talk show with Eddie. I'd guess Tracy probably doesn't want to be at the station late nights, and Lance has taken the Extra Innings show and ran with it.

A couple weeks in now, and Thom is sounding much more comfortable and more like he is communicating with you rather than too you. That is a tough skill since radio is so one sided, clearly having guests on is the way that happens more easily. McConnell and Cunningham are two of the best at that skill to do so independently. Sloan has gotten better in the last 2-3 years but I still do not " look forward" to getting his take on issues the way i would Mike. If Sloan can keep working on improving over the next 30-40 years, he might be pretty good.

Sloan was better 9 to midnight. I don't enjoy his morning show nearly as much as I did his night show. I stopped listening to Thom in the mornings. I just can't take it. He might be improving but hearing his voice at 5 am just makes me cringe, as the kids say. I listen to less and less WLW everyday and more podcast lately. I use to be WLW around the clock, even outside of the car.

Thom just doesn't have the personality that Mike had. I did, however, enjoy his segment with Rand Paul this morning. I didn't like that he ripped on Paul after the interview.

I'm ok with Thom and I never expect him to be Mike. Thom is a little edgy and seems to want to really push his points across. I just wonder how Chuck Ingram likes him, Thom goes at him quite a bit in the mornings and that could get pretty old. Mike just had such a way of steering the ship without appearing to do so. Thom's political leanings are very evident and that kind of turns alot of people off. Alot thought Mike was ultra conservative yet he always said he was down the middle. I wonder if they see it now?

Such sad news out of Cincinnati this weekend with the Hamilton County Sheriff officer being run down and dying from the injuries. I just can't get in my head how awful people can be. It was intentional. A man who's son was shot and killed by Cincinnati cops last week took his car and ran over this innocent cop just directing traffic for UC's graduation?? I mean what is the guy thinking? His son was clearly in the wrong and shot at cops, he was the cause of his own demise. And you take it out on another police officer?? And even worse he was retired, just doing some side police work because there's such a shortage. Just terrible.

Yep, not a good look to run someone over just because they happen to work in the same type of job a person did who killed your son. Good chance he never sees the outside of a prison the rest of his life. They said he had no priors. Hope he likes prison.

I think Mike was very much middle of the road. I agree with 99% of his takes in life, so I also view myself as a moral conservative but social moderate. Thom is certainly far right of my stance.

I mean I'm sure the guy was just outraged losing his son. But what would cause you to take your car and run over an innocent person, cop or not?? We have so many messed up people out there these days. Our society's value placed on human life is as low as I can ever remember. You have kids who get into a scrap (which we all did growing up) and they just start shooting now?? Insanity.

Not sure if you caught it this morning, but Marty was on with Thom and Thom brought up that Stephen A. Smith may make a Presidental run and Marty said he's vote for him. Thom was incredulous. Marty said he thinks Stephan A. is very intelligent, articulate and would be as good of candidate as anyone else that's put up. He basically then scolded Thom for bringing up politics, which he told him not to do, but if it's brought up, he'll voice his opinion. Pretty good radio.

Thoughts on Thom Brennaman and his new gig on the morning show? I'll listen during baseball season because you get some Reds news, etc. Brennaman/ Jones on baseball is really good. But outside of that, I'll probably find something else after baseball season. I knew Mike would be tough to replace.

Thom still sucks and he is starting to show that he is a slight bully on air, always making fun of Brian Coombs and Chuck Ingram. I now see why he made those hot Mic comments that got him fired. He makes fun of and bullies anyone underneath him. He thinks he is hilarious with his barbs too. He is basically a nepo baby, Sophomoric bully. Screw Thom.

Just listened to Willie for about 5 minutes and I had to change it. I really can't stand listening to people talk about politics. It really doesn't matter what we think of as American's and tax payers, politicians are running the country and it's not changing. Everyone is up in arms about the tarriffs, deficits, medicare, etc. You know what, I bet if you went back 10 years ago, they'd be talking about the same things. Point is nothing changes.

I have enjoyed hearing Mo and Auty fill in for Ken Broo last 3 weeks on Sunday Morning Sportstalk. I've gotten tired of Broo and have stopped listening for the most part.

Willie has been unlistenable since his show became a parade of third rate Trump brown nosers.

Willie has a schtick and it's worked for him for decades, but he's much political now. I think it's easy because he does little to no preparation for his show. It's just spewing the same thing over and over, broken up by news, weather and sports every 5 minutes so you never really have much meat on the bone.

That’s true. The decline of his show has coincided with how little effort he puts forth. He used to have insight into local politics and events but the past few years when I’ve listened he never talks about local issues. I assume part of that is because he doesn’t have the connections he used to with politicians and judges.

It’s a shame how bad Willie’s show has gotten. As someone who started listening to him about 30 years ago I can’t tell you the last time I listened for more than 5 or 10 minutes.

Well you and I obviously don't make a dent into the ratings. Willie is one of the Cadillac's at The Big One and he'll name his exit date. You are correct he likely doesn't have the connections of the past. I also think there is less overall community interest in what's going on locally. Many people in younger generations just live their daily lives and many have no idea what's going on in their local community. If it doesn't directly affect them, they don't care. Willie's day probably consists of getting up, golfing in the morning, going in for the show from 12-3 then back to the golf course in the afternoon.
