2025 Pittsburgh Steelers

I don't think the Steelers are shopping Watt and Heyward at all. at their ages, I think these are two dudes who will re-sign/restructure for deals that make sense for them and the organization. just my take.

now use the extra picks we are getting from Fields and Wilson signing elsewhere and trade up for a QB you like. Let Rodgers play one year and then it's on to the new guy.
Do the extra picks occur in the upcoming draft? For some reason I thought those were 2026 picks. For instance I read that Wilson signing could mean a 5th round or even a 3rd round depending on performance with the Giants.

if it depends on performance then it would have to be NEXT year's pick but doesn't mean that you can't use those as bargaining chips/trade offers.

The compensatory picks for free agents lost this year will come in the 2026 NFL draft. It is a formula based on free agents signed, free agents lost, the size of contract signed, etc. no team can get more than 4 compensatory picks for free agents.

Teams can get additional pick(s) for minority assistants hired away as a GM, OC, DC or head coach.

I can understand getting compensatory picks of you lost out in a bidding war for one of your players, but the concept of getting a reward for someone you didn't ask back seems wrong.

Rodgers doesn’t make this team a championship team. It’s much ado about something that doesn’t matter much at all. He’s not 2012 Rodgers anymore and hasn’t been for a long time.

The things that kill franchises long term are typically these:

1. Holding onto stars past their prime and getting nothing of value out of them

2. Holding onto coaches far beyond their last real success

3. Related to 1. Constantly trying to reshuffle the roster in order to supplement the old guard

This goes for all sports. The Penguins are in this exact boat. Held onto the fantasy that Crosby, Malkin, and Letang will carry a team of lunchpailers forever. All while Mike Sullivan changes nothing behind the bench. Trade picks away, make bad FA signings… anything but what would have given them a real opportunity to be competitive long term.

At some point you have to accept that what is here isn’t championship material and a slight reset must occur. Can Tomlin. Move Watt and Heyward. Rebuild the OL. Get a QB. That’s what we should be seeing. Instead we’re seeing a lame duck franchise do lame duck things.

Rodgers will sign with the Steelers, but is delaying his announcement in order to garner more publicity for himself and try to obfuscate all of the criticism he received with the Jets. He's the focus off all the attention on NFL sports shows and is reveling in it. He's taking a page out of the LeBron playbook.

Right now, the whole Rodgers thing seems like asking for a prom date and she stalls in hopes of someone hotter ( Vikings) asking. If the hotter guy doesn't ask, she'll settle for you because she wants to go to the prom.

I think the last two posters opinions/views of the Aaron Rodgers saga are pretty spot on. If Rodgers plays, good. If Rodgers doesn’t play, good. Either way the Steeler will probably be around the 7-10 win mark. I’m ok with drafting Ole Miss QB Jaxon Dart in the 1st, he has more physical ability than Kenny Pickett. I don’t know if Dart is better than Pickett but there is more upside. Dart is a bit of a reach at 21st. Alabama qb is even more of a reach at 21st but he just accepted an invite to attend the 1st night of the draft which is an indication that he is going in the 1st.

I’d be ok with Rodgers and then drafting the OSU or Louisville qb in the 4th as well. If the season goes south with Rodgers, go with the rookie and see if you got lucky. If not, draft a QB invite the 1st in 2026 when the qb class is looking far better than this years.

thinking now we just end up drafting Jaxson Dart. let Rudolph start until he's ready. eff Rodgers. gtfoh with him now.
Might have to move up to draft Dart based on the hubbub around him lately. Not sure I want that to happen. Already Steelers don’t have a R2 pick.

From Sporting News:

When will Aaron Rodgers pick his next team? With the NFL draft approaching at the end of April, Rodgers could be waiting until teams make decisions on that front.

However, for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who own the No. 21 pick, the chances of them drafting a quarterback remain slim, barring a trade up.

With Rodgers' understanding, his decision could come sooner than some expect.

Ian Rapoport spoke about the situation, adding that the Minnesota Vikings are out, with the Steelers expected to be where he lands.

"I would say the Vikings are as out as they could be right now," Rapoport said Monday on "The Pat McAfee Show." "Like, if Aaron is not signed by like August and something terrible happens to either the Vikings or someone else, he would be the top guy available by a lot. I think Ryan Tannehill was in this situation last year. Tannehill ended up not signing and that's where it stays."

Rapoport then said he'd be "surprised" if Rodgers waited until after the draft, meaning his decision will come in the coming days or weeks.

"I would be very surprised if Rodgers waited till after the draft," Rapoport said. "I'd be very surprised if it wasn't the Steelers if he plays. But I have not 100% been able to nail down is is he absolutely definitely playing. And I think that's why this conversation is sort of still ongoing."

Rodgers, 41 years old, threw for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns last season for the New York Jets. He's still productive and could help this Steelers' offense.

This article states the QB’s they believe the Steelers are somewhat interested in and what round they would have to draft them

1st - Dart & Milroe
3rd or 4th - Howard, Cook & Ewers

For a 1st rd pick, neither Dart or Milroe excited me. In either of these two guys would have gone in the first round last year and may only do so this year because a team is reaching.

Ether of those 3 in the 4th rd would be fine but none appear to be ‘the guy’.

Reality is the Steelers future franchise QB will most likely not be on a NFL roster in 2025. That QB will probably be playing on Saturday or heaven forbid, Friday night. Aaron Rodgers, Kirt Cousins, Mason Rudolph….all are probably a 10 game max win in 2025. A rookie QB; Sanders, Dart, Milroe, Howard, the kid for Louisville - none seem to be the guy or any better than Kenny Pickett. Sanders & Dart each seem to be a reach at 21st in the 1st round. I believe the Steelers must draft at least one of these guys in this draft but in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th round; all have far too many concerns.

Steelers draft picks:
1st - 21st overall
3rd - 83rd
4th - 123rd
5th - 156th
6th - 185th
7th - 229th

With wr D.K. Metcalf now under contract for 5 years @ $30 mil per, I think it’s time to trade wr George Pickens. With one year left on his rookie deal I think they may find an interested party for a 2nd (Green Bay has been mentioned). Pickens is a ridiculous talent and mental midget all wrapped up in one.

It’s not a flashy draft but I’d like to see the Steelers draft/trade:
1st - DT
2nd (pick from trade of Pickens) - QB or RB
3rd - QB or RB
4th - Oline
5th - CB
6th - QB
7th - OLB/Edge rusher

Troy Polamalu speaks to the USC team. Boy, we've all gotten old.

With Green Bay taking a wr in the 1st round, the Steelers might be keeping Pickens. If the Steelers only draft in the 3rd round tonight I would think it will be OT, QB or possibly RB.
* OT from West Virginia & Purdue
* QB from Bama & Ohio State
* RB from UCF, ASU & Virginia Tech

I think it all depends on who they like/dislike amongst these positions. Seems like one can find a RB in the later rounds (Warren was a undrafted free agent) and JK Dobbins & Nick Chubb are still available as a free agents.

Sad news about the 1st round DT mother who passed today.

I always felt that Pittsburgh should keep Pickens along with Metcalfe. Why trade Pickens? Youre back to square 1 with one talented WR and a bunch of question marks if hes traded. Makes the DK trade moot.
I think the Steelers stick to their ' best player available' mantra for the remaining rounds

Talent wise, Pickens is incredible but he’s a mental midget who they are unlikely to resign after the 2025 season. At best, the Steelers would get a 2027 3rd round compensatory pick for him leaving via free agency. If you can get a 2nd now you would also release one head case player (Metcalf can be moody as well). If Pickens was gone the Steelers could look at signing FA Keenan Allen. I think Austin is ready to take another step in his development as well and Wilson can only play better this year.

No doubt that Pickens makes an incredible catch or two a game, very difficult to replace that.
