2025 Coventry Comets Football

Coventry is not traditionally a great football school, but the last two years have been rough. Two wins in two seasons, with both wins coming from Springfield. Hoping that the Comets will be more competitive in the coming year. This will be the last year before the Comets rejoin the PAC, which is a move I am looking forward to.

Not a whole lot of football news except that Coventry is leaning towards keeping Gary Kanaga as the permanent head coach. He also coaches wrestling, and from what I’ve been told the wrestling numbers have increased this year.The boys basketball team is 8-2 right now, so that’s been fun to watch. I’d highly recommend catching a Coventry basketball game if you can.The student section brings it every game and really gets into it.

Looks like I may have to be a bandwagon Coventry fan for the remainder of basketball season. Great to see the Comets off to such a good start. I'm sure you'd have no trouble beating my Bulldogs.

As for football, well, at least you aren't Springfield!

I feel bad for those kids. Tough situation that school is in. I don't even think the boys varsity will win a game in basketball this season.

Coventry definitely has typically been more of a basketball school compared to football. The 7th and 8th grade teams (8th grade especially) have been having good seasons. Middle school football team had a 5-3 record this year, so hopefully that’ll help when those kids get to the high school level, as I don’t even think the JV had a win this year.

Yeah, I was as well, but I watched most of the livestream and they couldn’t handle the press Ellet was giving them all game. Super aggressive and it worked to their favor. One of Coventry’s top players was out as well.I don’t think Coventry was aggressive enough on defense, but it is what it is.

Smoove make a serious comment here: If they keep this current guy as they head coach, they makin' a mistake. They been playin' whack-a-mole for a few years now. Since Egan leftified, the program had a decent season in 2022, but have stunk up the joints ever since. THis past year after dismissin' the previous coach, this guy seemed initially to have brouhgt some discipline to the team and they seemed to play a bit harder, but they still had way too many penalties and then the situation after the Springfield game was a disgrace on both teams. The new coach should have made it clear based on the number of penalties, personal fouls and late hits and stuff goin' on, they should have agreed with Springfield's coach to not shake hands afterward, just point to each other afterward and leave. Smoove think it ain't gettin' better with the guy that came in halfway throuhg the year. Smithwent 0-5, Kanaga was 1-4 and still got beaten badly with very little improvement in play, discipline and creativity. Time to make the move to a new guy and let them build something.

Ellet's basketball team isn't bad, just young.
Not sure who was out for Coventry, their two best players, Kennerly and Edwards played all game.
Devon McAfee is not a great coach.

Alex Meinen, the sophomore was out. Not sure why. Ellet has been a common OOC opponent in basketball for Coventry for quite some time. They must like playing each other. Is Ellet expected to do big things in basketball in the next few years? Anything expected in football?

Basketball team is young, might make a little noise next season if everyone sticks around.
Football - don't know. I know most people like what the coach is doing and where it's heading.

No disrespect to McAfee, I think the Comets could benefit from a better X's and O's guy, especially this team.
I'm glad the basketball is doing well. I have family members that play sports there and I know they are excited.

Heard through the grapevine that the planned QB who’s going to be a junior is leaving for another school. He plays basketball as well and is a very good player, but I have a feeling it’s going to affect them more in basketball than football. Coventry even getting two wins this year would be a huge step in the right direction at this point.

Head basketball coach and assistant FB coach Devon McAfee has apparently stepped down from coaching. There’s some rumors going around about him but I have no idea if they’re true.

Every few years, Coventry seems to have some kind of controversy going on. Where is the qb / bball player going?

Not sure right now. They’re losing a few basketball players unfortunately, and he is one of them.

Yes, usually when they’re in the news it’s not for a good reason. The 2014 hazing incident, a football coach and a female staff member sexting each other and leaving nudes on the tablet where they record the games in the press box where students ended up seeing it, etc.

I’m not sure who will be the QB now. They have a guy graduating, one guy leaving. They do have a JV QB, but they didnt win a game last year but idk how many options they will have or even what their numbers will look like this year. It’s been in the early-mid 40s in recent years.

Now Smoove know this post is old, dated December 29th, but did Orange really say they like the coach at Ellet and where the program was going under him??!! They was 1-9, and going no-wheres!! Didn't block a linebacker all year long...Now Smoove ain't no Vince Lombardi, but Smoove know if you wanna run the pill, you best block some inside linebackers when you runnin' the rock. HEcks, that team Ellet had last year went no wheres really fast under that dude. And you watch how Woodridge gonna go circlin' the drain, too. Kids liked him cause he had no discipline nor control. THey did what they wanted. They musta loved losin' too! Gonna be some Big Time moovin' and Shakin' now with Sax in therr. Dude knows how to win and he will demand more outta the kids. THAT what they need, not buddies.

Nahh, Smoove ain't never gonna jump ship on the Comets, but Smoove just makin' the point that Orange speakifyin' outcht his mouff sayin' the people think that the former coach was doing a good job. SHOOT, ain't no one doin' anything good if you 1-9. Prolly what the kids did like was throwin' the rock all over the place every game and gettin' some time to shine, even if that shine time was only very minimal. Prolly made the other teams defensive backs look like D1 recruits and all dat! Shoot, Smoove think they likeified the old coach because he let them not practice, do what they want, and not work hard. THAT ain't no way to run a program that have beent struggled. What Smoove sayin' though, new coach beent at Garfield and had success, and Smoove think he beent at Lake where they have success as well. Coventry need to keep they peeps, for sure, but high school becomin' like free agency and it make Smoove's bowels moove fo' rill! Build the program, have some pride. Smoove disappointated in the kids leavin'. Too much put on sports. Y'all gots to know the way to make it is with yo MIND...unless you is Smoove, then you make it witcho Mind and yo' ability to pleaseate the chickies witcho Grooves, Mooves, and sweet lovin'!
