2024-25 Season General Discussion

Maybe I read something wrong. The ESPN brackets show Illinois opponent TBD and Houston's Southern Ill.

Edit: Nevermind, there's something about the play-in I don't get. Two games are for #11 spot (Illinois and Miss St get those) and two for #16. (Duke and Auburn get those)

Why though? Why aren't all four play-ins for #16 spot?

The Big Ten getting 8 teams in was a gift because the conference shouldn't have gotten more than 7 in. They did not get a gift in regards to seedings and locations though. Brand of basketball is just not fun and doesn't win when it counts most
Which Big Ten team are you keeping out?

Keyshawn Gilbert being out severely limits Iowa St. If he was healthy, I might pick them as a FF team.

It’s a complete failure by the NCAA to allow active employees, much less fricken ADs, to serve on the Selection Committee. That’s a stunning conflict of interest.

Assuming we can rule you out, How do you propose they select the committee that selects the teams or just selects the teams?

It's the NCAA's dance. They are a member built organization. The members have agreed to how the committee is selected, not the f-in gambling sites, not the f-in fans, not the f-in networks, not the f-in politicians. Who is anyone to tell a private organization who they are to put on their committee?

I'm all for calling the selections moronic as my opinions deems it but I have no business in how the selection is made.

That’s the weakest f’n excuse. Like the lead of the committee wields no influence when he’s not in the room.
I’ve yet to see anyone, en mass, complain about this set up in the past for either basketball or football until this year.

The more likely scenario is that UNC gets more viewership than any of the other bubble teams and that is what gave them a leg up over the others.

I also dont see you complaining about XU getting in despite going 1-9 in Q1 matchups. Is it then safe assume your argument for UNC not getting in has nothing to do with the fact they went 1-11 in Q1 games? Otherwise it seems like selective outrage for UNC because you’re a Duke and Xavier fan.

Xavier had 2 wins (UConn & Creighton) that are right on the border of Q1. UNC's 2nd best win is probably Wake Forest.

But still 1-9 against Q1 teams.

Edit: per NET rankings, SMU (46) and Pitt (61) are better wins than Wake (69)

UNC got in because they pass the "look test." Yes they lost a lot of games but they were competitive in them even against Florida and Michigan State. They play a fun brand of basketball built on speed and scoring quick and have the potential to beat anyone. It's not hard to figure out

Around 2000, the Mountain West Conference was formed, and were eligible for an automatic bid. Rather than drop an at large bid, the NCAA came up with the play-in game, and the two lowest 16 seed teams had to play to get in the tourney.

15 years ago, the NCAA decided they wanted to include 3 more at large teams, upping the total of teams to 68. I imagine the original plan was to make 8 16 seed teams and have them play in. However, the smaller conferences balked at this – saying they were already punished because 2 of them had to play in, let alone 8 of them. Also, and this probably carried more weight with the NCAA, CBS balked at the idea of having to broadcast 4 games with 16 seeds on Tuesday and Wednesday before the tourney. The viewership of 16 seeds playing each other wasn’t anything to write home about.

The compromise was to create 2 16 seed games, and 2 11 seed games. I’m not sure it was always the 11 seeds – for some reason I seem to remember 12 seeds playing in.

UNC making a lot of people look foolish in here tonight. Like I said when they are on they can compete/beat anyone in the country. Thats what playing a fast/fun brand of basketball can do when you have good athletes.

I expect them to also beat Ole Miss.

All these bubble Mountain West teams do NOT deserve the benefit of the doubt after the conference’s NCAA Tournament performance post-Covid (21-24):

16 bids

3 First Four exits
10 first round exits
1 second round exit
1 Sweet 16 exit (SDSU)
1 national title game appearance (SDSU)
Like I said over the weekend, the Mountain West’s teams should not have been given the benefit of the doubt over other bubble teams.

While all the scrutiny was on North Carolina, it really should turn to how New Mexico and Utah State fare in winnable 7 vs 10 games. This conference continues to produce horrific results in the tournament, with SDSU getting humiliated last night.

Great performance but technically wasn't a Q1 game which has been UNC's kryptonite all season. We'll see if Friday officially bucks the trend of UNC collapsing in those match-ups.

Right, but they pass the "look test" which is something I said a few weeks ago.

Correct. They have been certified all year in the types of games that amount to NCAA tournament-esque games. Near flawless elsewhere which I’d attribute to superior athletes/talent.

The above heavily hints at Hubert Davis being a major liability in terms of strategy and in-game coaching. I could see them getting another win but they won’t go very far.
