2023 Mid-State League

Great game all around BU has stuff to figure out I think they left 8 on bases, 3 recorded errors I think there should have been some others given but you know how that works lol. Pugh did a heck of a job on his second outing of the year 93 - 51 strikes faced 20 batters 10 were strike outs followed up by Moore 5 batters 22 -16 strikes 3 strike outs outs.
Good stuff; thanks for it!

Yep. I’m dubious of GC. But, I will say that it wasn’t because I think the scorers are up to chicanery… just that there are too many plays that legitimately fall into the 50/50’s (main one being fielding errors vs true infield hits. Notice that I’m saying FE’s and not ROE’s.) And there isn’t a real point in trying to reconcile the two books in real-time or post-game (not realistic and the aims don’t rise to the effort necessary.) Glad and thankful that volunteers do it — it’s not the funnest job in the world.

Just as an example of the 50/50’s and how they can be entered in (possibly) incorrectly: below is the runner who eventually was Rosecrans’ first to get across the plate last night. Ground ball that isn’t fielded cleanly — throw beats the runner; field ump ruled “off the bag.” I can see how in realtime as it happened it could be scored by Rosecrans as a hit (especially if they don’t see the “off the bag” mechanic.) If the shoe were on our foot I’d get it, too, how it could be believed to be a hit and scored as such (not that I agree, only that I understand.)

Sunny, partly cloudy, 70 degree Tuesday before Easter weekend. “Green with envy” never felt so real.

(Thankful to have four games in already, though!)

We got a final score from out Hoover Road way? Hoping to source it through Twitter or Yappi-fu, and not have to work the backchannels too hard.

Pivotal game to the league title picture.

For ease of reading purposes, and for my housekeeping amid the chaos of rainouts, "League GameDay #" will refer to the physical day and date of the M-W-F grid as originally scheduled for the corresponding games. This is already kinda sorta going to be a sh--show as Friday got banged and there's a whole combination of games already made up for that, makeup dates for other games and games that don't even have make-up dates yet. Work with me, here.

So, week 2 is more or less wrapped up for the Cardinal. I know that FCA hosts Sheridan in a DH on Saturday and Port hosts Franklin Heights (???) with Berne hosting Rittman on Friday (always wondered how this scheduled game came to be — played them last year, too.) Miller hosts Racine on Thursday, too.

edit: I see BU has Circleville tomorrow.

Hope everyone ups their serving of Wheaties this upcoming weekend — week ‘3’ looks entirely sunny. 😎

HPS has now scheduled West on their schedule. Season has been a struggle, as a lack of fundamentals, caused by inexperience, and pitching has plagued the team all year. In a typical game, they are starting at least one player who has never played before, and several people who have never started before. Like to see that the numbers are high and will only lose one player next year. This year is all about progress and finding a couple players who can be serviceable pitchers, as well as finding a lineup who can make routine players.

Zach Fleer is trying to build West’s program back up, so it’s good to see a link-up with a team also trying to climb the ladder and get momentum growing.

There was a time where Prep had squads that could take opposing teams the whole 7 innings. Youngsters may not believe it, but it’s true.

HP did win 12 league games scattered across the ‘07, ‘08, ‘09 and ‘10 seasons. They did not finish last in any of those seasons, and in addition to scoring multiple wins a year over Millersport they snagged upsets on Berne, Fisher and West Jeff in that stretch. I believe that Tyler Farrell went over 100 strikeouts in 2010 as well — and that was in the BESR bat era!

Great way to start out league play. On the road against one of the top teams in the league and take home a win. I think what we seen early so far FC is going to compete with a chance to win the league. It’s a three team race with FC FCA and Rosecrans. I would put money on thst nobody is going undefeated in league play. FC has 3 good starting pitchers and shown early the bottom half can help win games on offense. FCA has depth in the pitching and has a nice offensive lineup top to bottom. Rosecrans not sure on pitching but Hartman needs to get back on track next outing. MIllersport has no depth in pitching beside their top two and the bats need major major improvement. FCA should have no problem with MIllersport tomorrow. To me they are eliminated from making a run. Berne can hit a little but we will see where their pitching can take them. I don’t think they can make a run either.
I think, despite the loss to Port, BU is still close (has climbed in)to that third ring of the top 3 race.

The Port loss does make things harder out the gate from the ladder climbing perspective. I do think Berne is, at minimum, a “can/will cause chaos for the top” team.

An impromptu week ‘3’ preview…

FCA kicks off the large-slate welcoming the Bishops of Zanesville to town. Other Monday action features Berne going to southern Perry County to take on Miller. The Rockets are looking to string together back-to-back wins and start a hot streak before taking on FCA the following Monday. In the same vein of momentum-building, Millersport travels to Hoover Road in a good opportunity to get back on track.

After GCC, the Lakers come down Rt 37 to Ben Thimmes Field on Tuesday for the reschedule of the game inked originally for First Friday. That game falls second, sequentially, in a “four Cardinal games in five days” stretch for FC. The third game of that stretch headlines league play for 4/12, as the Irish make the arduous 20 seconds drive to Beavers and Berne. Many games over the years, there. Other Wednesday contests include Miller going to the Gant to take on Rosecrans and FCA at GCC.

Friday (now with meat!) has Miller hosting Millersport, GCC at Beavers, HP at Rosecrans and… at long last… FCA at FC.

Hope all have a good, happy, and family-filled Easter. May your basket come with the finest Sunflower seeds and sunblock!

FCA 4
Rosecrans 1

Good pitching duel b/w Schmitz (sitting on a no-no through 6) and, out of nowhere, a freshman lefty for the ‘Crans. Was 2-0 heading into the bottom of the 6th.

Kid for ‘Crans, Tanner Perdue, has a big future in this league.

FC 23-0 HP, was only 1-0 after first inning, 2nd inning HP had 5 or 6 errors on routine plays in the outfield, gave up 16 runs in that inning, but they are missing like 2-3 usual starters because the school is on spring break, FC had some amazing hits, looking forward to watch them in the Cardinal!!

GCC 5
Millersport 0

The middle of this league starting to become fun even on the normal M-W-F grid. Can’t wait for May reschedules SZN.

That is awesome I love watching new classman entering any sport and seeing what they can do to help the team and think where did this kid come from

Pivotal game for The ‘Port tonight. MP started week ‘2’ of the season (last week) off with a bang but have had some wounds to lick since then — some have been itchy, some have stung. A big road win would be a shot in the arm and a welcomed reversal fortune as the mid-year mark is days away for the young Vest’s ball club. Big Mike did well at FC last year, and he’ll be on the bump tonight.

O/U total runs at 4.5

I have no explanation, no thoughtfulness and no reason to aptly and appropriately describe the events of tonight. Only to say, onto the next one.
