The Firestone Lady Falcons are coming off 9-14 season. One of their goals this year is to improve on that mark. The second half of last season was highlighted by a win over Hoban and a solid finish at sectionals.
The team is led by their excellent junior Alexandria Vardon, who was named team MVP last season. Second year coach John Bozeka explained the impact Vardon has on the team. “She continues to improve each and every day, she is certain to challenge for a spot at districts this season.” Also returning is junior Sienna Sneed, a steadying force for the young Falcons. Sneed has grown to become a leader for the team, along with Vardon. She is poised for a breakout season this year. Vardon and Sneed are the team captains for 2022 version of the Falcons.
The other two varsity returners are sophomores Abbie Pantea and Xyia West. Pantea is an extremely consistent player. “She will undoubtedly be a factor for the Falcons this season,” said Bozeka. West is a 2-sport standout, placing 1st in the Akron City Series girls shot put this past year as a freshman. West and Pantea are key pieces for the Falcons this year, both are starting to come into their own as players.
The Falcons also have depth this season, junior Elise Dunbar and sophomores Addison Sendelbach and Paige Swaney provide a lot of depth for the team this season. Sendelbach, Swaney and Dunbar all came on strong towards the end of last season. Coach Bozeka also welcomes sophomore Libby Williams & freshman Tabitha Christman as newcomers this season. The program continues to take steps towards building consistency and coach Bozeka expects this year to be a huge step for the team. He is excited about the potential of his team and is proud of their continued dedication to the sport.

Hoban Girls Golf will be leaning on the play and leadership of our returning letterwinners in the junior class, led by two-year letterwinner Sofia Miklic. “From day one, Sofia has been contributing to the varsity program through consistent play and low scores, including 9-hole and 18-hole personal bests in 2021,” explained Coach Theresa Schock. In 2022, Hoban will be depending on more of that steady play from Sofia and hoping for continued lowering of her personal best scores. Other returning letterwinners in the junior class are Sammi Hessel and Lane Shannon, who both joined the golf program last year as sophomores. “Sammi’s hard work and always questioning attitude helped form her into an everyday varsity player by midseason,” Schock said. “Lane was a two-sport athlete in the fall, also participating in the Hoban Girls Soccer program, and used her athletic ability and unflappable attitude to earn a varsity spot out of the gate. We look to Sammi and Lane to continue to lead by example, joining Sofia as the leaders of our 2022 Girls Golf program.”

The Gators return a total of three players from last year’s team. Hardy continued, “We are a young team with mostly new 9th graders and no seniors. We are hoping our juniors use their leadership skills to motivate the underclass women to practice and play as much golf as possible this summer so they will be able to compete in August.” The Gators have a good chance to make another run toward Districts in 2022 and Maschke has all the tools to make it to the State Tournament..

St. Joe’s came out of nowhere to qualify for the District Tournament in 2021. They return their whole squad in 2022 and may be able to make even more noise in tournament season. “With 5 returning varsity golfers and JV and incoming freshman showing good potential, I am excited to see this next season unfold,” said Coach Maureen Adler. “There is a great positive energy that has carried over from last season.” Coach Adler is very pleased with how her team is working to improve this offseason. “Many of last year’s team have shared what they have been doing to improve their games since last year. Some have realized that golf requires practice and play throughout the year. This should help us pick right up with things come August.” The program depth could also help the Jaguars. “Girls who love golf on the JV team and entering as freshman will make competition for the varsity spots an ongoing thing throughout the season,” said Coach Adler.
