2022-2023 Ohio State Basketball

Probably depends on the level of player. The 4/5 star kids are going to keep going to the big time schools that offer NBA development and big NIL dollars. These 25 year olds still playing college basketball will finally be faded out after the ‘25 season too
I was speaking more about the kids that are the 9, 10 or 11 man on a roster that can get an offer from Ohio State but will never play. Are they better to go to Toledo or BGSU and get a year or two of playing and then look to transfer to OSU? Etzler or Hardman could be an example.

Toledo has a pretty good reputation of holding the good ones until graduation. Lost one to NBA. RJ Dennis (Baylor) and Marreon Jackson (Az) I believe both left with diplomas and with one year on eligibility. An OSU might see that useful if a hole doesn't get plugged. More likely they'll have found someone that can give them a couple years. I suspect this new BG coach will do the same, unless he decides this is a short stop to moving up.

Noticed today that they made a new in-state scholarship offer...'24 SG/SF Colin White (Ottawa-Glandorf).

Stock seems to be way up over the last 8-10 weeks. Has picked up offers recently from Ohio State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Stanford, TCU, and Butler, along with a few "better" (IMO) mid-major schools like Loyola and Richmond. Only had a UC and maybe one other offer that previously stood out to me.

This spring/summer he's played for Indiana Elite on the Adidas circuit. Pretty sure he's probably only played for more regional NW/northern Ohio clubs before.
His 5 are: OSU, TCU, UC, Butler and Northwestern.
I’d go Butler or Northwestern if I were him.

My understanding is he realizes why OSU might have needed to see more before offering but I guess really values the schools that offered him sooner.
That is why many schools do offer early, so they will get that consideration when the choice is made. White is a 3* small forward and the Buckeyes have offers into 7 small forwards that are ranked in the top 100 and rated higher then him. He sits at 114 in the national ranking. Plus the fact that they have Scotty Middleton and Devin Royale coming this year in the same position could be a jam. It would appear they are putting a focus on a PG and inside size from the 2024 class.

They needed to see better shooting especially when it came to getting it off during contact. He is athletic. He jumps well. Not a strong ball handler and not a good defender.

Mentioned by utsherman in the CFB forum but Gene Smith is retiring June 30 2024. I think, outside of another off the rails season in the W-L column, Holtmann is safe for 2 more years now. New AD may want their own basketball guy but taking over that late into the summer is too late to make a change.

This is an excellent point. Holtmann may have felt a slight tinge of anxiety when the announcement was made this AM. And hopefully lights more of a fire under his 'you know what'. New AD's clearly like to put an early stamp on their tenure.

From the article...
“He might not play right away, but his ability to develop and play as he gets older is going to be important," a source told Eleven Warriors about White. "If he didn’t play for a non-circuit AAU team for 15u and 16u he would be a top-100 player.”
From earlier in this thread, I believe I questioned a little bit along the lines of this. This spring/summer he averaged over 14 ppg 4.5 rpg and 2.5 apg while shooting about 50% from the field for his Adidas circuit team (Indiana Elite) that went 39-3. Very versatile skill set with a lot of offensive tools.

I've really liked this kid the handful of times I've seen O-G play over the last two years. Glad to see him get a chance to play for the Bucks.

This should be a small class. I'd think you'd just want to take the two commitments they currently have, and then replace any outgoing transfers after the season with guys you recruit in the spring out of the portal.

They currently have 13 scholarship players on the roster...only three seniors with 10/13 scholarships going to 1st and 2nd year players. Zed could play for two more years. Two guys that transferred (Battle and Bonner) in are out of eligibility after this year, and you're effectively replacing those two with the two commitments. Odds are a couple of those 1st and 2nd year guys will leave for playing time, and they need to be replaced in the spring with some older veteran players.

Ok pickup, missed on some other guys so needed to get a plan B player. OSU is having trouble recruiting this cycle since Holtmann is on the hot seat.
While I genuinely would like to see Holtmann get canned if he continues to underwhelm, I think you're doing some wishful projecting here.

Low scholarships for this class, and he got a top 40-45 player with one of them. With the Gene Smith retirement date set for the middle of next summer, I'd say it's a lock Holtmann gets at least two more years. Gene isn't firing and replacing him on the way out the door, no matter how bad he does this year.

I think they’ll keep chasing Sherrell, Mobley’s teammate, and the Quinntance (I know that’s not right lol) kid who recently reclassified. But if they miss those two yeah, I don’t think they add any other HS kids.

And it prolly won’t … these dudes aren’t gonna log meaningful minutes …
Recruiting Etzler, Hardman, Parks and maybe now White could be more about keeping in good standings with the home state and for filling Holtmann's roster spots then it is about building a winning team.

I could see White and maybe Parks (depending on continued development) eventually seeing real playing time.

IMO White at this point has a lot more game/variety of skills to him than those other guys and has size/athleticism that'll be at least decent at a P5 level. I wouldn't expect him to play early, especially with the glut of bodies they have in the two classes ahead of him, but I wouldn't be surprised if after a couple years he becomes a very solid contributor.

Maybe, if they both want to stick it out until their junior or senior season. Parks is very comparable to Micah Potter, who was a starting freshman before Holtmann went in another direction. White is as athletic as Arhens but maybe not the shooter he was in high school.

White is way more athletic than Arhens

White and Ahren’s games are completely different. i suggest watching some game film on him. He’s not a set shooter
Seen plenty of film and both live. OSU has plenty of athletes but typically guys can find the floor if they can do something nobody else can or at least if they can do it better. Ahrens did that and saw meaningful minutes in his third year.

have you seen White play? I've watched him that last 2 yeas at State, and that kid can play at OSU.

That’s the thing… White doesn’t do anything “great”. Just pretty darn good at most things. 7’s across the board, no 9’s or 10’s.

Yes, I never said he couldn't play. I just gave an opinion that it may not be right away with the roster they have and the way Holtmann has been hitting the portal.
