2020 PIT PreSeeds
We will seed at least 8 wrestlers per weight. We use criteria 1-4 to seed all wrestlers who meet one of those criteria values. Then we will utilize winning percentage to fill out the 8. We also use the head to head feature on trackwrestling that allows a wrestler to jump over a wrestler they have beaten and are within 5 spots on the pre-seeds and have not lost to anyone pre-seeded behind them.

Surprised to see some of the Toledo teams that are entered. For the most part, they no longer have wrestling teams, but still have a few individuals that wrestle. Look forward to seeing the teams and how many wrestlers they have participating. Toledo Central Catholic has dropped the furthest. I believe around 2015 or 2016 they had the 2nd ranked team in the state in Division II. Last year in the TRAC league championship, they had a total of 3 wrestlers on the varsity team. I thought St. Frances had dropped wrestling, but they also had abou 3 varsity wrestlers last year. Not sure how many are on the Start and Bowsher teams. Don't see a team for Toledo Rogers anymore. Stritch dropped wrestling completely a few years ago after fiddling around with about 2-4 wrestlers for a few years. Not sure if Woodward has wrestling anymore. St. Johns has some decent numbers, but still dwindling off.

Toledo Public did drop wrestling back in 2010 and brought it back in 2013. Since being brought back there has been a few home grown wrestlers that have made some deep runs at the District tournament and missed placement by a match or two.

St Francis never dropped wrestling just had low numbers for a couple of years. Unfortunately the same thing that has hurt the TPS schools is also hurting the Catholic schools. There are no more true Jr High programs in the City, that used to feed both the public and the catholic schools.

Toledo Central Catholic has dropped the furthest.

TCC put nearly all their eggs in the football basket now at the expense of most other sports. Few years ago were state qualifying team in cross country now they can't even five kids to compete as a team.

Toledo Whitmer hopes to work really hard and scrounge up enough kids from their hallways to put together somewhat of a competitive wrestling team, or at least have a couple of individuals that wrestle on their team. We hope to one day be competitive with the rest of the entered field at PIT.

Respectfully,

We certainly did not have 3 varsity wrestlers at SFS last year and never dropped wrestling. As a matter of fact, we have around 30 kids in our program

Start was in Cincy this past weekend at the middletown Pool tournament
they had 4 or 5 kids. Their 120 is tough as nails beat Zigo from Trotwood in the finals!

Whitmer has had a consistently solid program over the last 6-8 years. SFS has also had numbers in their rosters. TCC has dropped substantially. Rogers, I believe has a program, but has a coach who just collects a paycheck and doesn't spend a fraction of time trying to build anything. SJJ wrestling program had its peak performance when Eric Cubberly was head coach, in about the past decade or so, Contos will be valuable as they rebuild. I have not seen much of Start and Bowsher as I think they are in a similar boat as Rogers.

I can't speak for other schools, but Toledo Start has a very dedicated staff. I work hand in hand with them often in our off-season endeavors. Their Head Coach (Justin Kruczkowski) is a Start graduate and wrestled for Findlay University under Coach Nelson. They suffer from intangibles that many Title I schools suffer; lack of support, funding and Ed Choice waivers

You are right. I was looking at the TRAC tournament from last year and thought I saw only three entrants from St. Frances. I miscounted. There were actually 6: Howard (145), Arnold (152), O'Neill (160), Curtis-McCormack (170), Edinger (182), Brown (195). I must gave skipped some weight classes as I was scrolling down the page. Hope the program continues to grow. Back when I was in grade school. St. Frances was tops in the state.

I know Whitmer has been solid and Haskins has a solid shot at a state title this year. I didn't mention them as part of the old city league of TPS since (from my memory) they were primarily in the GLL for a long period of time, then the City League for several years, and now the TRAC. Pretty much has been in lockstep with Clay when it came to conference affiliations. Were one of our main opponents in virtually every sport. Fortunately, in my senior season we beat them in every sport except basketball. Clay's football team now is just a shadow of what it was under Ted Federici. If you lived in Oregon and didn't play for TedFed, you were not looked upon favorably....lol

One of the things that could help Toledo area wrestling is if Univ. of Toledo brought back wrestling and took some of their other sports off the table not only to save some money, but to stay in compliance with Title IX. I have also proposed via an email that they consider jumping early on the bandwagon for a college women's wrestling team. It is growing fast and would do wonders for the Toledo area. Plenty of good athletes, but like most sports, needs to have a grass roots level of support - and that is not easy to restart. Toledo is basically in the hotbed of wrestling with Illinois, Indiana to the West, Pa, New Jersey and New York to the East, Michigan (not a lot of volume, but some very good individuals) to the North, and West Va. and Kentucky to the South. I checked, and those states alone (Ohio Included) provided something like 62% of all the NCAA qualifiers in 2019. Toledo would be able to compete well with CMU and Ohio U. and be in the mix for 2nd place in the league in about 5-7 years. Heck, they could have a solid team just from guys on partial or no scholarships at the Big Ten schools that are not cracking the starting line-up.

I also looked at the academic reputations of the school with wrestling teams, and Toledo could be part of that - which I believe would also help the perception of Toledo. It has been greatly under-rated and now has a Medical school (the former Medical College of Ohio), a law school, well respected engineering and pharmacy colleges, and much more. The MAC is not be on par academically with the Ivy League schools (all of which have wrestling programs as does the Big Ten), or even the ACC and Big 10/14. But there are now 15 teams that are affiliated with the MAC - including Missouri. The schools added do bring a solid academic reputation with them - and will likely bring the 3rd most NCAA qualifiers of any conference in the country. Not to be frowned upon. Let's face it, Ohio State will always be the big brother in the state for virtually all sports. But, the MAC is close to many that not only attended those schools but participated in varsity sports at those schools. While many have become big OSU fans, there is still that desire for many to see the MAC do well - and have competitors making it to the semi's and finals of March Mat-ness

Would love to see Toledo return to the hey-days of Scalzo, Torio, Wojo, Wilson, Doc Leffler et al - but other than Wojo (and Leffler who is now around 88 years old), those guys are all gone. Ohio is also seeing drop-offs in the sport, so it would help for Toledo to return to a higher level of strength. Ohio has a total of 4 Div. I wrestling programs (OSU, Ohio, Kent St. and Cleveland St.). Pennsylvania has 11. Any wonder why Pa has nearly twice as many D-I qualifiers as any other state in the country? Florida, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama and Texas do not have 1 DI wrestling program among them. They essentially "export" all their top level talent.

None of this was meant to slam any teams in the old City League but rather to somewhat lament the fact that the sport has dropped off so precipitously over the past few decades. I didn't even mention Waite who had very good success no more than a decade ago.

Sorry - turned out to be much too long.

For the St. Frances faithful - very interesting and inspirational on one of the Godfathers of Toledo wrestling who also touches a little on the loss of wrestling at Univ. of Toledo

Didn't mean to high-jack the thread, just waiting to see the line-ups and seeds even though Clay does not have a team entered this year. I may still venture down to see the tourney since my nephew's son is coached by the P'burg head coach in his youth program.

Perrysburg wins it. results and brackets are on Track Wrestling.

Top Five:
Perrysburg-233
Oak Harbor-148.5
Centerville-139
Wauseon-127.5
Medina Highland-113

Outside of Linder, can't think of any of consequence (maybe the lighter Haney too). Either way, Highland is a year away from competing with Perrysburg type of teams.
This weekend they were Missing Linder, Haney at 113 (top 20 kid) and W. Scavuzzo at 152 (top 15 kid). Those guys probably account for enough points to put them into 2nd possibly, but not enough to be ahead of Perrysburg. Also had freshman Stiles at 170 who had to medical default out after Friday night, he almost certainly would have been a placer. They need to find a 220# and HWT. They are definitely a year or two away from serious contenders with 5 freshman and 5 sophomores in the starting lineup but they have big upside for the future.

I thought there were 2 Scavuzzo boys. I'm not sure how they would stack up against Perrysburg in a dual. Perrysburg is pretty solid all the way through but I think H Medina is also

They do have 2 Scavuzzo‘s boys - James at 145 and William at 152. They are cousins. They are both sophomores.
