Why would you say overrated? I didn't much was expected because they were so young, but won GWOC and District which wasn't bad. Especially since last loss was to Moeller.
 
I have never seen anyone make 1st or 2nd team all state with a ppg average as low as 10 ppg. I know that there is more to b-ball than scoring points, but it’s still how we determine who wins games. I looked and he was 21st in his conference in scoring, not all state stats and only was a 37% shooter, not impressive...it must be the notoriety of his asu teammate and dad as coach...usually the voters defer to upperclassmen when others have comparable stats, but I don’t vote...he also played in Dayton, which had the worst talent than I have seen in over 25 years...as proof, Centerville was Dayton’s #1 seed with an 11-11 record and was rewarded by playing a 5-17 team and a 1-21 team in the first 2 rounds of the tourney, ridiculous! played a serious out of conference schedule, but most big time schools do that and played in a real Christmas tourney this year...last year they traveled over 1000 miles to play 3 or 4 div. 4 type Christian schools when they could have stayed home and played Middletown Christian and Xenia Christian and saved a lot of money, IMO...the Elks were young this year, but they had more height than any Elk squad that I can remember with 3 kids over 6’7”...scored 5 points in the first 2 quarters against Moeller, 5 points...not impressive for a regional semi-finalist...they should be a much improved team next year

Definitely benefited from hype IMO. The kid's going to be very good and Centerville will be very good in a couple years, but there's no way a freshman averaging 10 ppg on a .500 regular season team should get 2nd team all-state.

But I still don't see how they were overrated. Maybe we just disagree as to what overrated means.

All the responders here seem to think they weren't any good so it's not you. Were they getting ranked statewide? They got a high seed in the tourney, but as you say the teams in the area were down this year. Was there another team you thought should have received the #1 seed? And if so, who? Also, the coaches vote for seeding so you're saying the coaches overrated them? Playing crappy teams is what you get for getting a high seed, so of course the early games were easy ones. And yes, they were down 28-10 to Moe at half and lost by 12. Lot of other teams got smacked by Moe as well.

They do have some size (mostly young) for the first time in a while, and young Cupps is a good player, so it will be interesting to see how they turn out the next few years.

30 plus years ago a kid from Warren area Maplewood made all Ohio with about a 8ppg average. Rich Chapman maybe? Maybe wasnt quite that low but close.

To average 10 points in a weak conference and still get that recognition is an affront to a lot of players.
 
For those that know, is Gabe Cupps legit?

He averaged 10 points is why I ask? Good for a frosh in DI no doubt but 2nd team AS? 6'1? If he was 6'10" maybe I could understand? Just curious?

He's going to be a very, very good player but in no way should have been 2nd team all-state as a freshman. JMO.

He is good, no doubt. Probably first team by his junior or senior year. Legitimate is scoring, having very low turnovers and playing excellent D. He seems like a great kid that will work hard and his dad will provide all opportunities for him.
