2018 Football

When Coach Rosfeld was hired and doing interviews, I remember him saying on a couple of occasions that he will be implementing a defense from the college ranks that people haven't seen around here. I have no idea about the coaches except he said he would be coaching the o-line. Hopefully, he's able to get a good core group that will bring stability to the program and not have it be a revolving door. I am confident he gets this thing turned around.

I remember him saying the same thing. Doug worked under Luke Fickell at UC. Fickell was a pretty good DC at tOSU and I'd imagine that Doug has access to Fickell's expertise, especially with Luke's kid in the program.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how Doug brings his experience at UC to this team. He was one of the boys' favorite teachers during his last stint with the school and I'd bet his experience as the Director of Player Development will bring a variable to Moeller Football that will pay dividends.

agreed. GBM

Anybody else order any of the Jordan brand gear back in February?

If so, has anyone actually received any? I ordered a t-shirt and I swore that receipt mentioned it would be a 3-4 week wait and we're now on week 6?

I remember ordering gear when my son played and it was all sent to the school. The stuff came in bags and they'd give it to the players. Not sure if they're still doing this but that might be why you haven't gotten your stuff.

Thanks, last time I ordered Nike gear when we made that change, it came far quicker then this and I haven’t lived in Cincinnati since 2010.

I guess I’ll just have to contact someone at Moeller, this stuff has to have arrived at this point?

I'd certainly hope they'd ship it to your home address then. Might be a long drive to Moeller if you don't live in Cincinnati anymore.

I'm not sold on the staff. There is a major lack of experience. Two coaches (Gall & Jones) have never coached before. Blum has two years of coaching experience at the JV level. Naumann has been a part-time coach for the past how many years? I heard from a buddy that they did hire a DC. He coached LB's at LaSalle last year. Has no experience as a DC. Again another sign of inexperience. This isn't little league football! You need experience on your staff and I don't see much on this staff outside of Doug and Majors.

I would definitely echo your concerns here.

Totally Agree. It is a concern for sure. Also, McBride has announced that he will NOT be playing football. QB play is another big question mark going into 2018 season. I have heard Moe got 1 maybe 2 Qb transfers. Can anyone provide any insight? GBM

I heard a QB transferred in from Loveland after Christmas Break. I think his a Freshman so will be a Soph next year. Word is he's pretty good. Not sure of the second QB transfer.

Do you think MacKenzie is still in the mix or are the coaches moving past him after last year?

Last year when McBride went down McKenzie and Bradfish played QB. Both will be seniors. Was there a junior QB last year? What about the soph QB from last year that will be a junior this year? I'm assuming they don't think he can do it since they moved Bradfish to the back-up when McBride went down. With that said if we don't have a junior QB let the transfer (soph) compete with Mckenzie for the job. I think we have a lot of depth at receiver so it would be nice to see Bradfish compete for the QB job. Mckenzie needs to earn the job not have it handed to him especially with how he played last year. He didn't do anything to have the job handed to him. Bradfish played well most of the time last year. He was the QB when we beat St. I's.

QB has to be the biggest question mark for this team for sure. Nobody stepped up and claimed the job when McBride went down. It's surprising Moeller didn't have more depth at that position. My guess is McKenzie will be the guy.....better passer. The season ended like a train wreck last year, so you can't put it all on the QB. Whoever it is will definitely need to step up. Hopefully, an off-season to get better and the new coaching staff will bring some life to the position. I would just like to see the best kid play regardless of grade....sophomore, junior, senior. Whoever gives you the best chance to win.

I know it’s not all on him, but is it fair to say McKenzie was lacking in durability once given the playing time?

I want to write off last season, but it’s not just last year, the past few seasons looked like a total train wreck as an alum. Really hoping Coach Roafeld has these guys playing better football.

I’m sharing others thoughts being concerned about the lack of experience on the coaching staff, still haven’t seen a list.

I understand the concern about the lack of experience with some of the coaches. But a positive about them being so green is that will be easier to mold, opposed to a guy who has 20 years of experience but is stuck in his ways.

I assuming McKenzie will start at QB. Hoping he has a big off season and comes back much stronger.

I'll take experience over someone being green and being able to mold them into what you want them to be. Successful Head Coaches surround themselves with great assistant coaches that will give them insight and knowledge through the experiences they have had over their years of coaching. At a small school you can take inexperienced coaches and have them coach varsity football but this isn't small school football this is MOELLER HIGH SCHOOL. I guess we will see how it works out but outside of the QB position coaching, lack of coaching experience, are the two big question marks for the 2018 Crusaders in my opinion.

I'm biased but I think we will be ok, can't be any worse than last year. Jones played in the Big 10 and Blum played at a smaller college and is a teacher i believe. They are not exactly clueless and just because there not a middle aged dude whos been barking at high school kids for 10+ years, wanting to run out dated schemes and techniques does not mean they cant get the job done.

But its 2018, and no one cares that were are Moeller. Last year we had how many D1 kids and how many coaches that won state championships? Multiple of both, and the result was dog because the culture got to egotistical. The current staff is working hard to change that culture.

There is such thing as too many cooks in the kitchen so to speak.

You may be right, and I will be the first to admit it, but I am going to be positive with this team until they give me a reason not to be. I believe that we are going to get back to doing more with less as opposed to being a very mediocre program that pissed away d1 talent.

Time will tell. I wouldn't get too excited when we jump out to a 4-0 record. The first four weeks opponents aren't stellar. Canadian team game one (why even schedule this game Asbeck? When will he learn there are no harbin points with this game!), Trinity loses a lot from last year but should be good so maybe after this game we can get us an indication of where this team and coaching staff is. Scott County loses their receiver, big OL and QB I believe, Lexington Lafayette was horrible last year. We will see come week #5 when we travel to North Bend Road. I hope you are right Leonard but if it were me as the head coach I would have experience over "young" former DI players who have never coached. We will see!

I've watched Mackenzie for many years. The positive on him is he has a great arm. Negatives were and continue to be, durability, speed/mobility and judgement. You won't last long in the GCL if you're lacking in these. The wild card factor is,...Asbeck is his uncle,.....sooooo.....

I have never been a big fan of McKenzies- but that was when we had options, ha! I will say that if you go back to the Lasalle game he played incredibly well. Like I said during the season- playing poorly after finally getting his shot may have lit a fire for him. Our would be junior QB moved out of state mid season- he had a lot of potential.
He and Asbeck are related, but not his uncle.

Mitch just needs some consistency, confidence and about 25 pounds on his frame. I think if he can get through the scrimmages and the early part of the season without getting pulled every other quarter or game he'll be fine. He needs to get the confidence to be a leader. BTW, Asbeck is his moms brother in law. I'm pretty sure that qualifies him as Mitch's uncle.

Quibbling- but Asbeck is his Aunts (mom's twins) brother in law, so not really.
He is (like MacVittie before him)way above the normal age range for his grade- if the 25 lbs haven't come on yet they likely won't.
He has certainly improved since his freshman year, and like I have said- getting the starting job when Duece went down gave him a chance to show his stuff. He did well in one game- not so much in others. The main thing killing his confidence would be the proverbial "car ride home"...

Heard the team is gonna start running a triple-option look on offense. This might have a big impact on who lines up under center for the crusaders this fall.

If true, that will be really interesting. Whatever they run, I have to think Khayo will be the focal point of the offense next year. Find ways to get him the ball all over the field.

Julian and Ricky were exposed last year as kids messing around- they are laughing that you guys are even entertaining their comments.

Really don't think discussing discipline issues on yappi is a good idea.

Caudill's not going to see the field so let's move on. I'll take a stab a the starters for 2018

OFFENSE:
QB: McKenzie
RB: Watkins
WR: Bradfish
WR: Valentine
Slot: Khayo
C: Malone/Ringle
G: Richter
G: Staples
T: Carpenter
T: Dixon
TE: Boggs

DEFENSE:
Nose: Choi
DT: Mullaney
DT: Merritt
LB: Szabodas
LB: Toephfer
LB: Doggett
LB: Craft
C: Hendrix
C: Baker
S: Lampert
S: Junker

K: Thibadeaux
P: Causmano

The defense scheme they run will decide on how many lineman and linebackers play but that's my thoughts as of now. Remember we were a young team last year so there is a lot coming back.

I just hope they apply a little common sense and dont play carpenter both ways again.

As far as the defense, I put on some film of the UC/Temple game last year to get an idea of what may be coming in the fall.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01MREwFEIjo

I'n no D coordinator but looks like it was a lot of nickle with 4 dl/2 lb. With the DE standing up and rushing/dropping at times. Of course this could be what they thought was the best to run against temple. I will watch the Austin Pea film later, I think that will be a better indication of what the base D might be.

BTW plenty of full length games on youtube, if you want to scratch your football itch in late april.

Will Boggs also be used as an H-back this year? Does anyone know who the long snapper will be?
