About a month away from districts, maybe time for some central district talk, I think ua and sc will be the top two maybe 30-40 point favorite from ua right now, just deep in the individual events, coffman, darby, jerome, westerville central and olentangy all help make the central arguably the 2nd if not best district this year, thoughts?

mr-sc, ua, darby
200 free-weaver, horton, newcome
im-cook, depietro, reardon
50-trace, whitaker, scott (obviously miller if he swims it)
fly-miller, higdon, martin
100-miller, kabelka, weaver
500-cook, newcome, depietro
200 frr-coffman, sc, ua
back-trace, martin, saczawa
breast-welty, dawson, fischer
400 frr-coffman, darby, central

team-ua, sc, coffman, darby, olentangy, west. central

thoughts?

The Central doesn't come close to the Aquabomber's (most notably Grant House) SW District

rjones, not sure you can draw the conclusion that UA easily wins the district title based on this meet. Word is that UA had a top lineup for the meet and SC didn't.

re: occs not sure the names of the divisions
ohio-pick north should be the strong favorite, weakest division by far
central-ua will win by a large margin, Coffman second battling with o lib
cardinal-great deep meet, darby, w. central and Jerome should battle but a lot of other strong swimmers in this meet
capital-I think olentangy is deep enough to beat new albany

re ua v. sc
looking at results on meet mobile, sc pretty weak lineup, ua strong but not the best, no kibbe for ua which make a big difference, will be interesting at districts looking event by event
mr-very similar, both will be top 3
200 free-similar at top (newcome v kabelka), depth is similar as well
200 im-both have two solid in this even (kibbe reardon v beam penn)
50 free-trace will score a bunch here sc with good young swimmers
fly-sc should outscore ua here but no studs for either
100-if kabelka swims will be a big help, no studs for either if not
500-ua will outscore by a ton with or without kabelka
200 fr rel-both will be top 3/4
back-ua outscores by a bunch with trace, reardon and Hamilton should match scs others
breast-welty will win, but the top 4 look similar for both
400 fr rel-both will be top 3/4
diving-ua returns 3 scorers including two decent ones, sc two on the lower end might be the difference

Looks about right. Expect SC to outscore UA in IM, 50, 100, Fly, Breast & relays. Question is can SC counter the significant points UA will get in the 500. The one thing going for SC is the district looks particularly strong in the 500 this year. How the back half of SC's team swims & scores will be a major factor. Another factor is diving. If UA puts 2 divers in the top 8 and UA can place all its swimmers 4 - 8 in 500 (don't see anyone beating Cook, Orlov, & Depietro) then I don't think SC can win. For SC to win they need help from the rest of the district in those events. I would think the winning team score will be in the low 300s. Should be a great district meet. Hopefully all will swim well.

rjones, you may be right that UA wins the district, but that is not a certainty by any means. I don't see anyway that UA scores 400 points. And if they do win it will be by less than 80 points. This year's district will be more balanced than any in recent memory. Darby & Coffman will score well, maybe as much as 200 points. It is quite possible that neither UA or SC will win a relay. When was the last time that happened?

Actually due to the dominance of UA it has only happened 1 time in the last 50-some years. 1996. Delaware Hayes won the medley & Thomas Worthington won the freestyle relays. And oh yea, Thomas won the meet.

Great memory and nice to see the TW name in a once prominent position. Was that the McVey, Minister and Butler year.

I am announcing again this year, if UA wins by 100, I will personally apologize for all of the harassing that I have given rjones all these years :)

that was the year of mcvey, butler, the 2 ministers, you also had the two blantons on that team, one of only 2 times a worthington has won districts, other then the sc wins the only non ua wins

Swimmer24, UA has won so much and so often that most people think that only the Worthingtons & St. Charles have beaten them in the district meet. And they’re right if you only look at the district meet from 1956 on. But in reality, the district meet started in 1944.

So preeder you aren't picking the Bears decisively this year? Trace, Reardon & Newcomb all will win their events. Kibbe is freshman of the year and may be a district champ. You saw what they did to SC in the dual meet. Don't forget the Ned Reeb finish. UA was third and SC was ninth. Heck Coffman beat SC in the Ned Reeb. So, who can top Bears? I welcome your apology!

wow didn't realize that, who won the early years?

You are correct dutchman. The history of the district meet extends back to 1944 but district meets go further back than that. From 1932 until 1942 Columbus teams swam in Cincinnati to qualify for the state meet. Cincinnati Walnut Hills, Western Hills, & Hughes dominated those meets. North and Aquinas finished second there in 1936 and 1937 respectively. Those were the best showing by Columbus teams during that time period. There were no state qualifying meets in 1943. Teams swam in the state meet that year by invitation.

Beginning in 1944 a district meet was held in Columbus. Aquinas won the first 4 championships (‘44, ‘45, ‘46, & ’47) North won in 1948 and again in 1950 & 1951. Columbus West won in 1949. Bexley won in 1952 & 1953 and Grandview won in 1954 & 1955. UA managed to finish second 3 times (’45, ’47, & ’55) during that period.

UA began its run in 1956 winning every meet until 1991 when Worthington (Kilbourne had not opened yet) won its only title. In 1996 Thomas won the meet (by then Kilbourne had opened). Then UA won all the meets until St. Charles won 5 in a row beginning in 2006 and ending with a half point victory over UA in 2010. UA has won the last 3.

All told UA has won 51 times; St. Charles 5 times; Aquinas 4 times; North 3 times; Bexley & Grandview 2 times each; and West, Worthington, & Thomas 1 time apiece. Worthington has been runner up a record 20 times – from 1970 to 1990. UA & St. Charles have each been runner up 10 times and Columbus Academy 9 times (the last in 1968). Thomas, Grandview and the old University School finished second 3 times each. Westerville North, Worthington Kilbourne, Newark, & Columbus Whetstone each have 2 runner up trophies. Columbus South, North and West along with Bexley finished second one time. And in 1956 the year UA won for the first time Fremont Ross finished second (seems like the only year they were in this district).

So without question UA has been the dominant team in the district. UA swimmers have won more individual and relay championships then just about all the other schools combined (roughly 322 individual & relay championships for UA to 367 for all the other schools). That means that UA has won nearly half the district individual and relay championships. They hold the team scoring record for 12 place scoring – 408 points (1978 & 1985; the 2008 St. Charles team scored 524 points, but that was scoring 16 places.) So without question UA has been THE team in the Central District. Although the rest of the field has come a long way, no one has or likely will displace them.

So preeder you aren't picking the Bears decisively this year? I welcome your apology!

Not so quick, my friend, we need to swim the meet first. I have faith that Coach Gear will have his team ready, while Coach deBear will have his team focused on Canton! There is a lot of pressure on the lead dog. Districts are no dual meet.

I may have to recount some of the fantastic history while at the meet. Thanks for the history lesson swim fan, where did you find this detailed info?

Excellent predictions.

Per the ThisWeek/Dispatch website...

Ohio... Pick North won
Central... UA won (of course), with Liberty and Coffman at number 2 and 3
Cardinal... Darby won, with Jerome a close 2nd and W Central not far behind
Capital... Olentangy over New Albany

Saturday is the 2014 Upper Arlington Invitational Championship known by the SC swimmers as the JV Championships. SC will be well represented by those on their team not swimming in the sectional (probably 12 to 15 swimmers). Expect the SC guys to drop significant time as they will be shaved, suited and tapered for the meet. UA has a fair number of swimmers entered but not certain they will be shaved or tapered for this meet as UA can enter nearly their entire roster into the sectional meet. Anyway the meet starts at 11 am. If your a fan its worth seeing as UA does a great job of creating a big meet atmosphere. And nearly all the swimmers drop time - something that the announcer typically points out for the heat winners.

Without question the most impressive time drops came from the Bears. UA swimmers in the meet were not rested, suited or shaved (unlike the St. Charles guys) and yet they matched the time drops of those who were. Lookout for the Bears, when the bottom of their team drops time like they did on Saturday without a taper; just imagine what the rest of the team will do in the next 3 weeks with a full taper. Saturday the Bears begin their march to exceed the "so called" experts predictions. After repeating as Sectional and District champs they will swim their fastest in Canton.

Does UA have any depth behind Trace?

as far as other ua kids, no one at trace's level, newcome, reardon, fischer and maybe kibbe should be state swimmers, definitely no where near the depth of the last 3 or 4 years

also psych sheets are coming up at http://cdab.org/sports/sd/default.htm
mason miller defending 50 free state champ not in it, 100 fly and 100 free, also looks like sc might be able to squeak by ua at the sectional level with their 8-12 swimmers, not sure that translates to districts, still would say ua is a 25-30 point favorite

On paper it does look like SC wins the sectional. However, expect at least four of the UA kids to be shaved, suited and fully rested so that they can move up and qualify for district. It looks like SC should qualify everyone without a full taper. With the move up of the rested kids UA should take the sectional. And although it will be close, UA will likely win the district because of their diving points and the overall depth of the district. That depth will counteract SC's depth. Unlike the past SC will not score all their swimmers. It will be interesting to see if UA tapers anyone other than Trace for states. Don't see SC tapering anyone for the state meet.

All the psych sheets are out looking forward to seeing the projected scores from someone braver then I! Aquacard you're up haha!

Here you go swimmer24. The D1 sectionals score out as follows:

Worthington Sectional:

NA - 221
Kilbourne - 182
WCentral - 174
Delaware - 163
Mt. Vernon - 144
Gahanna - 142
Thomas - 104
Teays Valley - 67
Northland - 45
Watkins M - 40
Newark - 2

UA Sectional:

SC - 332
UA - 311
Lancaster - 124
Pick N - 124
West S -104
Grove City - 103
West N - 85
Pick C - 54
Whetstone - 29
Central Crossing -20
Reynoldsburg - 8

Marysville Sectional:

Coffman - 216
Darby - 206
Jerome - 172
Liberty - 159
Olentangy - 134
Scioto - 127
Davidson - 94
Marysville - 79
Orange - 51
Bradley - 40

If you score the district off the psych sheets it scores as follows:

UA - 277
SC - 209
Coffman - 209
Darby - 185
Jerome - 142
NA - 121
West. C - 118
Olentangy - 116
Mt. Vernon - 100
Liberty - 98
Scioto - 90
Lancaster - 83
Pick. N - 68
West. S - 54
West. N - 51
Delaware - 44
Davidson - 43
Grove City - 34
Bradley - 31
Gahanna - 22
Marysville - 18
Northland - 12

Although the gap will tighten some, it looks comfortable for UA to repeat as champion. Diving is not in but they have 3 possible scorers there. SC as usual has listed slow relay times; so expect them to move up in points just on the relays alone. They always seem to taper well so they will move up in most events. Still the 500 looks to be devastating for them and gives UA a big scoring event. Coffman doesn't have nearly the room to move up in score that SC has, so although it is tied on the psych sheets I don't think they can seriously challenge SC for second. Nonetheless, this is the most balanced the district has looked in years. There is significant talent outside of SC & UA. Will be fun to watch!

Fantastic rundown Aquacard. Your stellar scoring and time commitment are appreciated. See everyone on the 15th. Should be some great racing. Sad to see my Thomas men, not scoring a point...
